Is Jesus Christ Michael the Archangel?

Audio: mp3

Jude 1:9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. This is the only place in the Bible Michael is referred to as the archangel. The word archangel is mentioned twice in the Bible and this being is contending with the devil. This character is also mentioned in Revelation.

Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

In the book of Daniel, the Scripture reveals this character is in an intense battle against the devil.

Daniel 10:13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

The angel is dealing with the king of Persia and Michael comes to help. He is one of the chief princes. The word ‘one’ is Ichad, which means first. When you run a race and you come first, what number are you? You are number one. Michael is first of the chief princes. He is the highest and this verse is consistent with Michael being an archangel. The word arch means chief. This being, Michael, is at the height of the armies of heaven.

Daniel 10:21 But I will show thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and [there is] none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.

Michael is involved with the other angels in saving man; He is the chief or head of them all. It goes on to say Michael your prince. Michael is involved in the warfare against the devil. Michael helps us and Daniel talks of a time in the near future when Michael shall stand up.

Daniel 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation [even] to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

This is the last conflict, and in this conflict Michael is there. He stands for humanity and is fighting for humanity. The people who are found in the lamb’s books of life will be delivered at that time. Michael has a huge input to the plan of salvation. He is the number one, chief archangel. He has helped in the past. He helped Daniel and he will help in the future. We are going to go through the Old Testament to understand who this key angel is.

Angel – A Messenger

Don’t be disturbed by the word angel. When we hear a word, we often relate it to what we have learned. When we say angel, we think of a seraphim or a cherubim. The word angel simply means messenger. In Revelation there are angels of the seven different churches. The leaders of the churches are called angels, messengers. The Apostle Paul was received like an angel because he was the messenger. Messenger is what the word angel means. Let’s not get hung up over the word angel.

Genesis 16:7. And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

The angel of the LORD found her.

Genesis 16:13 And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?

The angel comes and talks to her and she talks back and responds to the angel and says thou God seest me.

Genesis 22:11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here [am] I. 12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son] from me.

Who was Abraham sacrificing to? God? And the angel comes and tells him don’t do it. I see that you fear God because you haven’t withheld this sacrifice from me.

Genesis 22:15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, 16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son]:

Who is talking? The angel is talking.

Genesis 22:17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which [is] upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

The angel of the LORD spoke to Abraham and in speaking to Abraham he said I will bless and multiply thee. How does the apostle read this text?

Acts 3:25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindred of the earth be blessed.

Apostle Peter calls the Angel God

Apostle Peter referred to this angel as God. He quotes the text of the angel of the LORD. We see an interchange with the angel of the LORD and God or the angel of the LORD and the LORD, Jehovah. In the story of Jacob he called the name of the place Bethel and then he made a vow.

Genesis 28:19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, 21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God: 22 And this stone, which I have set [for] a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Jacob was in Bethel and he was making the vow to God.

Genesis 31:11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, [saying], Jacob: And I said, Here [am] I. 12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle [are] ringstreaked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee. 13 I [am] the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, [and] where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred.

The angel of the LORD says I am the God of Bethel. You have made a vow to me. Angel means angelos which means messenger. The messenger of the LORD was talking to Jacob and he says that I am the God of Bethel.

A New Name

We know the story where Jacob wrestled with the angel. As Jacob wrestled with the angel he said, I have seen God face to face. As he wrestled with the angel he asked him his name. The angel didn’t give a reply to his question but he gave Jacob a name change. Do you know who changed the names of the apostles? Do you know who changed the name of Paul? Do you know who is going to give a new name to the saints? Through Jacobs experience he talks to God and calls out to the LORD. Look how he addresses God. Jacob is blessing his sons and calls upon God to bless them.

Genesis 48:15 And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day, 16 The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

The patriarch Jacob is talking to God. The being that appears to the patriarchs of old is none other than Jesus Christ.

The angel was Christ.

Acts 7:30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. 31 When Moses saw [it], he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold [it], the voice of the Lord came unto him, 32 [Saying], I [am] the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.  33 Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.  34 I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.  35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send [to be] a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.  36 He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.  37 This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.  38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and [with] our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

Genesis 3:2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush [was] not consumed. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here [am] I 6 Moreover he said, I [am] the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

What was the name of the angel that appeared in the flame of fire?

Genesis 3:13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, [when] I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What [is] his name? what shall I say unto them? 14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

In the New Testament Jesus Christ is talking to the Jews.

John 8:57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Putting line upon line, precept upon precept, the being that appeared to Moses was Jesus Christ. But the name Jesus Christ was not given to Him until His birth in Bethlehem. It says, you will call Him Jesus but before that time He was known as the messenger of the LORD. Was Jesus Christ a messenger of the Father? Jesus said to Phillip have I been with you so long and don’t you know the Father? I am coming to reveal my Father to you.

We see two lessons. This angel, this messenger of the LORD is Jesus Christ or God the I AM.

Exodus 13:21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:

Who was in the cloud? The LORD was in the cloud. He led them to the Red Sea and the armies of Egypt followed them. The captain of the host of the LORD, the one who fights the battles for humanity led them.

Exodus 14:19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:

We see that the LORD Jehovah drew them out with a cloud and when he bought them where he was, he went behind them but the Bible says the angel of the LORD went behind them because they are the same person. Their names are interchanged all the way through the Bible so we can understand some of these answers if we study carefully.

Who met Balaam? The angel of the LORD met Balaam.

Numbers 22:35 And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak…

The angel of the LORD said this:

Number 23:4 And God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered upon [every] altar a bullock and a ram. 5 And the LORD put a word in Balaam’s mouth, and said…

Can you see the interchange? The angel of the LORD, and God and the great I AM but there are still people who doubt.

Judges 2:1 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

Who had the covenant with them? The ANGEL said I will never break my covenant with you.

Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

The messenger prepared the way and the LORD, even the messenger of the covenant. There is that word angelos again. The messenger/angel of the covenant whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

A Secret – Wonderful

Judges 13:15 And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, I pray thee, let us detain thee, until we shall have made ready a kid for thee. 17 And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What [is] thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour? 18 And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it [is] secret?

His name is secret. He is just referred to as the LORD, the LORD God; these are names that are not so personal. It’s a little secret. Did you know the word secret is the same as the word wonderful? The angel asks, why do you want to know my name seeing it is wonderful? Whose name is wonderful?

1) to be marvellous, be wonderful, be surpassing, be extraordinary, separate by distinguishing action
a) (Niphal)
1) to be beyond one’s power, be difficult to do
2) to be difficult to understand
3) to be wonderful, be extraordinary
a) marvellous (participle)
b) (Piel) to separate (an offering)
c) (Hiphil)
1) to do extraordinary or hard or difficult thing
2) to make wonderful, do wondrously
d) (Hithpael) to show oneself wonderful or marvellous

Isaiah 9:6 A child is born a son is given and his name shall be wonderful and he will be the prince of peace the almightily God, the everlasting father counselor.

They are his names. The angel of the LORD is saying my name is secret it is wonderful.

Judges 13:20 For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on [it], and fell on their faces to the ground. 21 But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he [was] an angel of the LORD. 22 And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.

All the patriarchs acknowledge it was the LORD of heaven.

Daniel 3:24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, [and] spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. 25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

Who was the fourth person? Do we need to spend time considering it? It is Jesus Christ who was there in the fiery furnace that delivered them.

Daniel 3:28 [Then] Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed [be] the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.

Jesus Christ is identified as the angel of the LORD that delivered them.

Joshua 5:13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, [Art] thou for us, or for our adversaries? 14 And he said, Nay; but [as] captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? 15 And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest [is] holy. And Joshua did so.

The captain, the top official of the army, the chief, the archangel was there and Joshua worshipped him.

Angel Worship

What does it say in Revelation about worshipping angels?

Revelation19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See [thou do it] not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Who did the angel and Joshua worship? They worshipped God.

Revelation 22:8 And I John saw these things, and heard [them]. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which showed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See [thou do it] not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

The Bible says we are not to worship angels; the seraphim and the cherubim. Joshua worshipped at the feet of the captain of the hosts, the archangel Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

Speaking of Jesus Christ, the angles were to worship him because he is God. Mankind is to worship Jesus Christ. Are we meant worship other men? Can we worship Jesus? Was He a man? Yes He was a man. He came in the form of a man therefore, can He come in the form of an angel? Some people think it strange God doesn’t have wings. The scripture says He will hide us under the shadow of His wings.

We can see that God engages with His creation as one of them. He made them and does not stand above them like a dictator. He enters their realm and participates with them. He did that with us and don’t we love him for it? Just because He participates with the angels, does that make Him not God? Because He participated with humanity, does that make Him not God also? These truths are Biblically very clear. He is the chief, the first of the princes in Daniel 10:21. He was Daniel’s prince He is our prince. Is He your prince?

The Papacy in Daniel

Daniel 8:25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify [himself] in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

The papacy is destroyed when Jesus comes in the seven last plagues. Not by another kingdom of earth taking over the kingdom but by Jesus Christ Himself because the papacy has magnified himself to be as God so it says he magnified himself, he stood up against the Prince of princes.

Daniel 9:25 Know therefore and understand, [that] from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince [shall be] seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

This is a prophecy of the birth of Jesus and he says until that time Messiah the Prince. Is the Messiah your Messiah? Is He your Saviour? Then He is your Prince. This great prince Michael the archangel will stand up soon. Like of old, He helped the Israelites and He had been with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua and Daniel. When Michael stands up, He is also going to be with His people in the end. Everyone who is found written in the book will be delivered. How will you cope when Michael will stand up?

Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. 2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he [is] like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap:

Are you prepared to meet the captain of the armies of heaven that never loses a battle and who made the patriarchs fall on their face? Are you ready to meet Him? When He comes, He is coming to complete the war He started with the dragon.
Michael and His angels fought against the dragon, Lucifer another angel. We are seeing a battle between two angels except one is God. Whose side do you want to be on? Lucifer said, I want to be like the most high. I want to be like God. Do you know what the name Michael means? It means who is like God. Lucifer wants to be like God and Michael is like God. That is why the war took place over Christ and Satan, over Michael and Satan. He is coming.

Revelation 19:11 [Michael has stood up now] 11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him [was] called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes [were] as a flame of fire, and on his head [were] many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. [Does this sound familiar, what is your name. It is a secret]. 13 And he [was] clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. [in the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God John 1:] 14 And the armies [which were] in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

He is coming to execute judgment and if you are on His side, you will be delivered. When He comes His voice is going to do something.

John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Does He get someone else to speak for Him? Whose voice is it? Jesus Christ voice will wake the dead and the voice is the voice of the archangel because Jesus Christ is Michael the Archangel.

Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel,

It is my prayer that we can align ourselves with his side of the battle because He will win and He has won every battle He has engaged in. If we are on Satan’s side, we will be destroyed. I pray you will make your decision for the Lord.
