Lessons on the Atonement

Section 1 The Atonement

Introduction

The subject of the Atonement is one sadly understood by few. If asked what the word atonement in the bible really refers to, a great majority reflect back to the Old Testament to the animal sacrifices and temple services of the Hebrew sanctuary. While it is known that this Old Testament symbolism is in reference to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross and the content of the saving Gospel; the great majority have very limited understanding of the practical engagement of the atonement. Minneapolis 1888

For more than 100 years Seventh-day Adventists have looked back at the 1888 General Conference session as a milestone in their history, a major turning point in their theological development. It is considered the most important theological conference in the church’s history. Though lasting less than a month, both the Minneapolis session (Oct. 17-Nov. 4) and the ministerial institute that preceded it (Oct. 10-16) changed the shape of Adventism.

1888 – What Really Happened? A. T. Jones and Ellen White Both Tell Us What Was Really Rejected

A Special Message for Laodicea

God has given Brother Jones and Brother Waggoner a message for the people. You do not believe that God has upheld them, but He has given them precious light, and their message has fed the people of God. When you reject the message borne by these men, you reject Christ, the Giver of the message. The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, pp. 1353. Read the rest of this entry

A Life of Gratitude

 Audio: mp3

The burden of despair rolls from the sick man’s soul; the peace of forgiveness rests upon his spirit, and shines out upon his countenance. His physical pain is gone, and his whole being is transformed. The helpless paralytic is healed! the guilty sinner is pardoned! {DA 268.3}

In simple faith he accepted the words of Jesus as the boon of new life. He urged no further request, but lay in blissful silence, too happy for words. {DA 268.4}

Are you able to appreciate this experience? What does it mean to you? Thy sins be forgiven thee. Therefore be of good cheer. This study is called A Life of Gratitude. With such a subject I could tell you a story of a man on death row, or I could tell you of a story of a man who was in the war and somebody else took his place and died in his stead. But I’m not going to. Read the rest of this entry

The Faith that Gets Me There

By John Thiel, Audio: mp3

Galatians 5:5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

When Jesus paid the price for our sins and was resurrected and was about to leave, he left behind a most wonderful assurance to his followers. He had given the assurance before but now as he was on his way he gave it again so his apostles could remember.

John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if [it were] not [so], I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, [there] ye may be also.

Do you believe those words? During the past year of divine services we have looked in depth into the preparations that we need to enter into here on earth to fit us for a place in that heavenly kingdom. Jesus said I want you to be there, let not your heart be troubled. Why did we have to go such careful research in preparation? Why could we not just be rejoicing in the fact that Jesus just wants us to be there and be done with it? Read the rest of this entry

Another Angel and 1888

0812140

In the Adventist realm we are always futurising everything, when the latter rain shall come is often said but it is already come. It is also said when the world will be lit with the glory. It began and has been shining since 1888.Are you taking advantage of the light that streams from 1888 in the proclamation of the nature of Christ? Do we take advantage to become stable Christians? If we reject these warnings, the warnings that we will get will be too late. When they saw their loved ones, their family and friends all slain and the blood rushing then they saw that the glory is departed and it was too late. http://sabbathsermons.com/2009/08/23/probation-is-closing-are-you-ready-2/

Palms 139:2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising. Thou understandest my thought afar off. 3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down. and art acquainted [with] all my ways. 4 For [there is] not a word in my tongue. [but]. lo. O LORD. thou knowest it altogether. 5 Thou hast beset me behind and before and laid thine hand upon me. 6 [Such] knowledge [is] too wonderful for me; it is high. I cannot [attain] unto it. 7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

As You Received So Walk in Him

By John Thiel, Audio: mp3

Colossians 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, [so] walk ye in him:
2:7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

We live in a very important time.

Zephaniah 2:1 Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired;

Is that you and me? Are we desired for the truth we hold? Are we outcasts?

Zephaniah 2:2 Before the decree bring forth, [before] the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you.

The fierce anger of the Lord come upon you oh nation not desired.

Zephaniah 2:3 Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.

It may be you will be hid. We want to know that there is a way by which we maybe hid. We are to gather the children and elders and let the servants of God weep between the porch and the altar. That is note of serious connotations attached to it. The seriousness of this is contained in the back ground of the light that was given in 1888. We are to walk in the light of 1888. What was the light of 1888? The revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin pardoning redeemer. That was the light of 1888. 1888 was the beginning of the light of the angel that will lighten the whole earth. It is the present message that is already lightening the earth with its glory from 1888 onwards. It was the latter rain which led to the loud cry of the third angel which was to swell from then onwards. Read the rest of this entry

Meeting the Law’s Demands

By John Thiel, Audio: mp3

As we open our heart to the message of Christ Our righteousness, there are some mysteries which unfold. Apostle Paul says he is the minister according to the dispensation of God.

Colossians 1:26 [Even] the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27 To whom God would make known what [is] the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: (Christ among you). 28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

Here is this announcement of a mystery that the apostles and all other apostles thereafter are given the duty to convey – the mystery that has been hid from ages. It has been poorly understood throughout the ages but now is made manifest. A mystery is not understood as made manifest it is something that is hidden. But under the gospel presentation it is no longer a mystery it is something that is manifest. Read the rest of this entry

The Faith of Jesus

By John Thiel, Audio: mp3

Revelation 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Why is the Sabbath day so special? It is written in Exodus 31.

Exodus 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it [is] a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that [ye] may know that I [am] the LORD that doth sanctify you.

In the Ten Commandments it is identified as the sabbath of the Lord thy God and this is a sign of a relationship because what does it say here? It is a sign between me and you. He is introducing a relationship concept. He wants you to know that I am the Lord that is at work for your sanctification. Who is this Lord that is saying I want a relationship with you which the sabbath is a sign of?

Mark 2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: 28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.

Who is the Lord that sanctifies us? That the Sabbath is a sign of? Jesus Christ. He said the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath. The Sabbath made for man, a sign and an integrated exercise of sanctification of which Jesus is the active agent to sanctify us and therefore he is the Lord of my life and the Lord of the Sabbath. The Law Our School Master

By John Thiel, Audio: mp3

We are to walk in the light that came down from heaven in 1888. To walk in the light of something that was addressed 120 years ago, it is a subject 120 years old. Why address the matter such a long time after? We have been made aware that the light of the Revelation 18 angel came back then and that was the beginning of the fourth angel and the beginning of the light that would swell into a loud cry. As we contemplate that reality, why has it taken 120 years?  To all human observation we have seen such little impact of that message in the ranks of the majority of Adventism. The Lord in his mercy according to TM 91-92 gave a most precious message to do what? To bring more prominently the Lord Jesus to us. This was written in 1895. Why was that written? Because we heard that in 1892 that the mark of the beast was established. Read the rest of this entry

Overview of 1888 (Introduction)

Jeremiah 33:14 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.  15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.  16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this [is the name] wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness.

1. The Urgency of Time

Audio: mp3 Part 1

Audio: mp3 Part 2

The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people through Elders Waggoner and Jones. [SEE APPENDIX.] This message was to bring more prominently before the world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive the righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God. Many had lost sight of Jesus. They needed to have their eyes directed to His divine person, His merits, and His changeless love for the human family. All power is given into His hands, that He may dispense rich gifts unto men, imparting the priceless gift of His own righteousness to the helpless human agent. This is the message that God commanded to be given to the world. It is the third angel’s message, which is to be proclaimed with a loud voice, and attended with the outpouring of His Spirit in a large measure. {TM 91.2}

1888 – The Beginning of the Loud Cry and the Fourth Angel

0810080

Let us, with contrite hearts, pray most earnestly that now, in the time of the latter rain, the showers of grace may fall upon us. At every meeting we attend our prayers should ascend, that at this very time God will impart warmth and moisture to our souls. As we seek God for the Holy Spirit, it will work in us meekness, humbleness of mind, a conscious dependence upon God for the perfecting latter rain. If we pray for the blessing in faith, we shall receive it as God has promised.—(Testimonies to Ministers, 508.) {Pr 119.6}

Emmanuel God With Us

0816133

By John Thiel

Introduction

The above titles are well known by us and it has been the work of God’s ministers to enlighten the people in regard to the practical reality of these. It is the purpose of this study to gaze into the depths of the intended meaning of the given titles. To be saved from sins involves an intelligent interrelationship of sinful humanity with Divinity which of necessity must include a conscious process of detection, overcoming and eradication of sin.

The work of gaining salvation is one of co-partnership, a joint operation. There is to be co-operation between God and the repentant sinner. This is necessary for the formation of right principles in the character. Man is to make earnest efforts to overcome that which hinders him from attaining to perfection. But he is wholly dependent upon God for success. Human effort of itself is not sufficient. Without the aid of divine power it avails nothing. God works and man works. Resistance of temptation must come from man, who must draw his power from God. On the one side there is infinite wisdom, compassion and power: on the other, weakness, sinfulness, absolute helplessness. Acts of the Apostles 482

For this work of saving from sins Jesus was born, that he could be the Author of this interrelationship, this joint operation.

Hebrews 5:8,9 Though He were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which He suffered: and being made perfect, He became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him. Read the rest of this entry

3. The History of this Angel

0801015x2

By John Thiel, Audio: The History of this Angel

When did the fourth angel come into existence? In our last study we studied the description or character of this angel and that character of people. We now want to look at and where these people arose.  In search of this character, we see how they join the third angel’s message as an historic event;

Revelation 18:1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. 2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.  The power and characteristic of these people announce and give the power of the message.

1 Corinthians 2:3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching [was] not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
