The Faith of Jesus under Condemnation

Scripture reading: Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

This hymn carries with it a certain trembling note:

I watch to shun the miry way,
And staunch the springs of guilty thought;
But, watch and struggle as I may,
Pure I am not, pure I am not.

2. God’s-Strong-Affection Motivation (Jesus in Our Darkness)

Scripture reading: 2 Corinthians 4:5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to [give] the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

What lifts our affections to God? His great love. We are told that

The Lord requires our undivided affections. {TDG 13.4}

10. The Swelling of Jacob’s Trouble

Many people think that Jacob’s trouble is just bang, there it is. Is it true that Jacob’s trouble is something that swells into greater and more intense activity? This is what we want to examine.

In the 1840s onwards, perplexities began to threaten. In 1848 a world war was threatening but then it just suddenly stopped. From that time as we look back through the history, we got to the time of 1914 and there was the First World War and all the horrendous experiences that were involved there. But they were even small in comparison to the Second World War and to the terrible time of the depression that happened in between. Then it moved on to a time in which there was the cold war with men’s hearts failing them for fear of the things that were coming on the planet. Now we are seeing them gathering more and more momentum.
