8. The Cross of the Believer

Who cares to let the Saviour in? We today are a very caring society. We care about our family even though the family may have done us a lot of hardship, we still care for our family. We care for our animals. We put such care into our business life. As the song says, have you any room for Jesus? There is no room for Jesus; there is no time for Him.

Scripture Reading: Philippians 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things [but] loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them [but] dung, that I may win Christ, … 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

We are looking at the cross of the believer. We have contemplated the cross of Christ but now we are turning our attention to the response that the believer would have as he contemplates the cross of Christ.

9. Climbing Jacob’s Ladder

By John Thiel, The Power of the Cross Conference, Study 9, mp3

We have been contemplating the power of the cross.

Nathaniel was contemplating what he had experienced at the baptism of Jesus and by all the baptisms of John the Baptist.

John 1:45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. 46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

7. The Sufferings of Christ from the Wilderness to Calvary

By John Thiel, The Power of the Cross Conference, Study 7, mp3

Scripture Reading: Lamentations 1:12 [Is it] nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted [me] in the day of his fierce anger.

The appreciation of the power of the cross can only be gained by the revelations of the Holy Spirit that takes of Jesus and shows Him to us. Our meditations are to follow on as we did in the journey that Jesus entered into when He left heaven. We saw it was an excruciating suffering at that time; so much so that in the beginning He was unconscious and then slowly the unfolding of the human brain as it developed from babyhood to childhood and youth to adulthood which unfolded to His understanding and appreciation to the point where He was 30 years of age. This is where we want to pick up His journey. Read the rest of this entry

6. The Cross of Jesus from Heaven to Earth

By John Thiel, The Power of the Cross Conference, Study 6, mp3

Scripture Reading Matthew 16:24-25 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

We want to contemplate the cross that Jesus embraced long before He met Calvary, Golgotha. We want to pick up the cross of Jesus from heaven down to earth and the journey that He continued until He reached Calvary. When we have our next study we will go from Gethsemane to Calvary. But now we want to study the power of the cross as it is revealed from heaven to earth. The purpose that we are studying this is that we may appreciate the power that comes from that; the power to conquer in the battle with sin.

4. I Have Found a Ransom

By John Thiel, The Power of the Cross Conference, Study 4, mp3

Scripture Reading: Hosea 6:4 O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness [is] as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away.

We continue the series on the power of the cross. God has compassion over our weakness. With such compassion that He has to help weak sinful human beings in their utter helplessness and depravity to do anything right, our goodness is like the morning cloud; for your goodness [is] as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away. 5. The Power of God

By John Thiel, The Power of the Cross Conference, Study 5, mp3

2 Corinthians 13:3 Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me,

Amongst all the preachers and teachers, we seek for proof of Christ speaking in me.

2 Corinthians 13:3 …which to you-ward is not weak, but is mighty in you. For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.

2. The Weakness of Christ the Man

By John Thiel, The Power of the Cross Conference, Study 2, mp3

The power of God can actually operate through Jesus Christ. You cannot appreciate the power of God unless you realise your weakness and your smallness. In our weakness and depravity which is the law of sin in my members, the moment that we want to do what is right because our mind has been affected by the purity of God and His truth and His law, we immediately discover there is a law in our members that fights against the law and the expectations of God.

According to the words of Apostle Paul, he says there is a law in my members that works contrary to the law of my mind. O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death, from this power? We read that there is a way by which we can actually conquer the weakness of our sinful flesh.

The body is the only medium through which the mind and the soul are developed for the upbuilding of character. Hence it is that the adversary of souls directs his temptations to the enfeebling and degrading of the physical powers. His success here means the surrender to evil of the whole being. The tendencies of our physical nature, unless under the dominion of a higher power, will surely work ruin and death. {MH 130.1}

3. The Compassion of God

By John Thiel, The Power of the Cross Conference, Study 3, mp3

Scripture Reading: 1 John 2:1-2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:  And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world.

The message that we are meditating upon is entitled God’s compassion. As we study this characteristic of God, we will see once again the power of the cross.

Psalm 78:37-39 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.  But he, [being] full of compassion, forgave [their] iniquity, and destroyed [them] not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath. For he remembered that they [were but] flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.

1. The Weakness and Depravity of Humanity

By John Thiel, The Power of the Cross Conference, Study 1, mp3

 We want to meditate upon the power of the cross and appreciate a message of understanding in reference to the power applicable to the person who needs the power; the object upon which the power is to be exercised. The power of the cross is given for a purpose to benefit the sinner. It is a power that is needed to achieve what a sinner cannot do.

1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
