The Definition of Covering

What then do I wear? The dress should be a covering with every movement.

1. When bending or sitting down the legs should not appear naked.
2. When bending down your top does not sag for all to look in.
3. That the dress is loose at every movement so that it will not expose the form or the shame of thy nakedness in anyway.
4. The style does not have to change in summer, just the material. We are blessed with durable cottons that are not translucent at an affordable price.
5. The feet should be clad not only for warmth but for modesty with pants under dress to protect us from sensual feelings which keep the sexual organs constantly on fire and create hot flushes in later years etc. (Refer to section ‘Submission to God’s Counsel on Health’.) By John Thiel, The Sanctuary Series, study 17, mp3

God’s way in the sanctuary is the way of holiness.

The Garment Spotted By the Flesh

By John Thiel, mp3

The Scriptures say that we are to be washed by the water and the word. To wash ourselves means that we are going to take God’s word and let it cleanse away the wrong ideas, the corruptions, spots and wrinkles of our character.

We now seek God’s word to gain the understanding of the words in Jude:

Jude 1:17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18 How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. 19 These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. 20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. 22 And of some have compassion, making a difference: 23 And others save with fear, pulling [them] out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. The Beauty of Holiness

By John Thiel

Psalms 29:2 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

The words of Jesus to the woman at the well always resound in my ears when I worship the Lord. The women at the well was a Samaritan and she thought the right place to worship was in Samaria and the Jews thought the right place to worship was in Jerusalem. She was entering into a dialogue with Jesus on that matter and finally Jesus made it quite clear to her that salvation is of the Jews and that is where God was working. But also that the day is coming and now is that those who worship God will worship him neither in Samaria or Jerusalem but in spirit and in truth.

That is where the Lord wants to be worshipped by us – in spirit and in truth. It is our effort to understand what it means to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth as we seek to study the subject the beauty of holiness. When we come to the subject of beauty we come to a very relative word. It is nothing very concrete because beauty is only in the eyes of the beholder. I saw a very ugly baby one day and the mother said isn’t’ he beautiful and I had to conquer my natural spirit and say I’m glad you think so to myself but to her – yes, a baby is always the most beautiful to its mother. To the artist beauty is in the features of symmetry and harmony in appearances. Read the rest of this entry

Dress Reform and the Sanctuary (2001)

Adornment for the One I Love

By John Thiel, mp3

God is love. In his loving effort to reach our sin darkened hearts we can see this demonstrated when we look at nature – the creatures he has put into existence for us to enjoy and look at the demonstration of his method in instilling his love into the sinner’s heart. This is the greatest dimension of his love that we can study. This never ceases to thrill my soul. If you ever want to get continued enjoyment, find someone to study with. Study the things of God’s love. When that person has settled into the truth, find another to study with. As you share with others the demonstration of God’s love in saving humanity, this will keep you alive.  Observe the study of God’s love demonstrated in the story of the Jews escaping from the Egyptians. This is an object lesson of God’s love for the sinner. For 400 years the Egyptians held the Israelites in captivity.

They were slaves to be used for the empire of the Egyptian nation. As the Hebrews were gaining energy and power because God blessed them, Pharaoh was so afraid of them multiplying, he turned the fire on. Instead of supplying them with raw material, they had to go and find it themselves. Then all the boys under two years old had to be slain. The intensity of the suffering they were going through brought out cries from them to God – save us. As a result of the intense crying, the Lord revealed himself to these people. The ten plagues came upon Egypt. Pharaoh was convinced to let these people go. Then they saw Pharaoh behind them and they trembled with fear.  We know the story of the Red Sea opening up for them. What a demonstration of Gods power for their souls. Filled with fear and anguish God demonstrated his amazing power of love towards them. Doesn’t this warm the heart? Can you imagine how they must have felt momentarily there of Gods hand to save them. God says, see how much I love you? Read the rest of this entry

Dress Reform in the Bible

The Bible speaks of a decline in modest dressing of those living in the last days.

Philippians 3:19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame.

The question is often asked, why should a Christian dress modestly if we are living in modern times? Why should both men and women be covered up?
