Introduction

As Seventh-day Adventists in modern times, we have been conditioned into a futuristic mentality. We think that the last day events are yet ahead of us, that the latter rain is yet to come, and that the loud cry of the third angel has not yet begun. We wait for fulfilment of prophecies which already are taking place around us.

It is the design of this lesson to make us aware that the storms of the last days have already been blowing upon this planet; that, in fact, we in our present generations have been born into them. Already the great majority of professing Christians have crumbled under the pressures of the storms of the last days. We are not ignorant of the Biblical identification of the commencment of the time of the end way back in 1798. We understand the event of 1844, which launched the hour of God’s judgement. The writings of Sister White have clearly chronicled the unfolding of the atrocities and wickedness of the last days which commenced in her lifetime. The counsels in her writings were given to prepare her generation for the perils of the last days just before them.

So where do we stand today? Are we not in the very perils they were to prepare themselves and their children for? Those children were the great-grandparents of the post-Second World War generation. Are we not living in the storms of the final days, and are we prepared for worse to come if we are not even able to stand faithfully in the present challenges?

Let us study diligently these lessons to identify the storms of these closing events in which we live, in order to repent and recover ourselves from where we have fallen, and, yes, become enlightened to prepare ourselves for the approaching relentless storms which will crush the majority of earth’s inhabitants.

May the words of Jeremiah 12:5 provoke us to rise to the challenges before us in a more determined connection with the God who alone can give us strength and victory:

“If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?”
