What Has Diet Got to do with My Salvation?

Audio: mp3

When we talk about food and religion we get interesting mixes of opinions and thoughts. Some believe that we are saved by a special diet and some people say because we are saved we don’t need a special diet.

Health

What has health got to do with our salvation? Has health got anything to do with our salvation? Am I saved by having a certain diet? Am I lost because I eat bacon? Am I saved because I don’t eat bacon? How does health and diet impact my spirituality? Many people are divided on the topic. Many texts are used to support that diet has nothing to do with our salvation. Classical texts that are used are Romans.

Romans 14:2 For one believeth that he may eat all things:another, who is weak, eateth herbs. 3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth:for God hath received him. 4 Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up:for God is able to make him stand.

This text is often used as a biblical proof to show that we can eat anything we like because we believe God, which is okay. Before God I stand and fall so there shouldn’t be any regulation at all upon dietary realities. The actual principles of Romans 14 is speaking of how you treat other people but the fact is we must answer to God about something. That answering to God is another subject all together whether I eat all things or not.

Peter’s Vision

The Apostle Peter has dietary laws in place in his life. He is a Jew so he does not consume any unclean food that is recorded in Leviticus. As well as being a Jew, he has a mentality that if you are not a Jew you are unclean like the animals. He gets this dream at the time he wants to eat some food when he is hungry.

Acts 10:10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, 11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. 14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. 15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

This portion here is saying what the Lord did. He gave a picnic blanket full of meat to Peter to eat. No doubt bacon was in there. Peter’s reaction was, ‘No way. I have these dietary laws and I can’t break them.’ People have concluded that the Lord was educating Peter that it was okay to eat anything. When you continue reading the context of it, it had nothing to do with eating. It had to do with the gospel to the gentiles. The Lord happened to use the illustration of what He knew was clean and unclean to illustrate the Jewish mentality of calling gentiles unclean. The fact that Peter didn’t quite understand the meaning of the vision straight away, is a very powerful evidence that it wasn’t meaning what so many people quickly jump to the conclusion that it meant that everything is okay to eat. Peter didn’t make that conclusion at all and neither should we.

The Jewish leaders had made hygienic laws/dietary laws given even by Moses and upon these laws the Jews placed salvation upon them. Jesus had a meal and the disciples didn’t wash their hands. Jesus addresses this issue where the Jews thought that because you didn’t wash your hands you were defiled. Not in the way that you get germs, but that you have been defiled with sin because you have a few germs on your hands. Jesus wanted to challenge them because they were plotting His death. What they are speaking and thinking is a direct violation of the Ten Commandments yet a germ goes into the mouth that the body is built to deal with and they say it is transgression that is worthy of eternal death but at the same time plotting the death of Jesus. Jesus challenges the mentality of the Jews on this point. He says to them:

Matthew 15:11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. 12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? 13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone:they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. 15 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable. 16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? 17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:20 These are the things which defile a man:but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

The word defileth is the word of makes a sinner. It makes you defiled like Lucifer fell when he was defiled by the iniquities in him. Jesus previously had spoken of a law saying out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. This saying offended the Pharisees. Are you saying that we don’t have to wash our hands anymore? Is Christ teaching that you don’t have to wash your hands? Is Christ abolishing hygiene? No. He is challenging the mentality on salvation. That is what He is doing. He is not saying that you can go to surgery and the doctor doesn’t have to wash his hands and you get all these viruses and things that are floating in the hospital because it won’t hurt you. He is challenging the defiled from the point of what is it that makes someone a sinner? Is it a germ or is it breaking the law in the mind?

He is comparing the activity of the digestive organs compared to the activity of the brain. He is saying the digestive organs don’t make you transgress, your brain does. He is not saying that you can put anything in your mouth and it is okay. He is not saying that you can drink alcohol and then have no problems because if you drink alcohol it will affect what comes out of your mouth. This line of understanding seems to be blurred both in the Pharisees and disciples and today. It is misunderstood as it is a license that I can consume any substance I like through my mouth and it is okay when Christ is actually not teaching that at all. He says sin doesn’t come from your digestive organs it comes from your brain.

If these scriptures which have been twisted in today’s Christian circles don’t mean what so many say they mean, does health have anything to do with my salvation?

Proverbs 4:20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. 21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. 22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. 23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Here he is communicating God’s way, God’s word, God’s standard. Keep in your brain in the deep part of your heart. Not just intellectually but in the seed of your affections, hold the truth of God. Isn’t this what Christ was teaching? Out of the heart are the issues of life. In other words what comes out of your mind are the issues of your salvation. If you didn’t have a brain you couldn’t believe in the gospel. I don’t think that is too hard to understand. We must keep, guard, protect and watch what happens inside my head with all diligence because I am dependent with what comes out of that for salvation. Out of the heart I believe, I profess Christ, I believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Can I put things into my mouth that do directly affect my heart?

Am I defiled by virtue of them going into my stomach or am I defiled by virtue of what they do to my heart? It is the latter but it does not give a free license to put anything in my mouth I want. If I take drugs or very obvious things that I will recognise and put them in, I damage my heart, mind and brain which I am dependent upon for salvation. Out of it come the issues of life. Simply, salvation and health are connected. Whether we like it or not, they are. Even if we try and dodge the subject it will catch us. Whether we believe in God or not, it will catch us what we do with our mind and with our health.

Temple of the Holy Ghost

1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

The physical organism of your body belongs to God and it houses the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit comes upon us it affects the brain. The brain is dependent on the liver and kidneys. Unlike some people believe that you can die and still live when you die, you are unconscious. You don’t have mental function any longer. The dead know nothing. There is a so called Christian belief that goes around that there is life after death. That although I don’t have any organs left I am still thinking. That is like saying a computer can work without any software.

When we die, who we are, our character, who we’ve built (our software) is stored in heaven but it is unconscious and not working. You can’t think, rationalise, make any changes or do anything. You are locked in to just being housed there. The Lord makes you a new body and puts that back in and you have to have a body to function. Whether it be a heavenly body, a celestial body, a terrestrial body or whatever God decides to make, He can do that but it needs a body nevertheless. When it comes to earth we have to have a body. My body functions my brain which houses the Holy Ghost. If I decide to destroy my body we will be destroyed. Does my health have anything to do with my salvation?

The Children of Israel

1 Corinthians 10:5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. 9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. 10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Is there anything wrong with eating and drinking and then maybe doing a little bit of a brisk exercise or going for a walk, doing something that is not work? The Bible says that they lusted after evil things.

Psalm 106:14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. 15 And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

That didn’t mean they lost weight in a fitness class but they got sick. Because of their activity it produced sickness. The activity that produces sickness the Lord calls it an evil thing.

Psalm 78:25 Man did eat angels’ food:he sent them meat to the full. 26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven:and by his power he brought in the south wind. 27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations. 29 So they did eat, and were well filled:for he gave them their own desire; 30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths, 31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.

Through sickness and disease this happens. Here we have a class of people who are following God in the desert. They are Christians and yet they lusted after a certain food that made them sick. God said have it and they had it and they died. Did affect their salvation? It sure did. Do we lust after food and use biblical examples to try and justify that we can eat anything? Is it possible that I can say, ‘I am a New Testament believer so I can eat bacon’ and cite Acts 10 to say there you go?

Perhaps I don’t even want to acknowledge that there is a connection between my health and salvation. Not that the absence of eating a certain thing or the eating of a certain thing, gives me salvation but it does affect my health. My health does have effect upon my salvation. We can easily draw the wrong conclusions to the other extreme and say our salvation is dependent on a certain special thing when it is not. When I respond to the way of the Lord and I have His words in my heart and I keep my heart diligently that keeps me to look after my body which supplies blood to my brain, it makes me worship God as a result of the love of God.

Looking to Jesus Diligently

It does not need to have to be about flesh food. It does not even have to be about bacon. It can even be not about bacon.

Hebrews 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you , and thereby many be defiled; 16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. 17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected:for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

The food desires of Esau affected his salvation. Make sure you look to the Lord diligently. Keep your heart because out of it are the issues of life lest anyone become like Esau. Who loves food so much will disregard God’s requirements and blessing for the sake of chewing on a bit of tucker.

The Lord has a blessing for us if we follow His ways on what a healthy living is to be. Not that they are the source of our salvation but they do have a blessing. A blessing is a healthy life. No one likes to be sick. Jesus Christ came and declared publicly that His mission wasn’t just to forgive people sins but it was to bind up the broken hearted, to give sight to the blind and to heal the wounds of the prisoners. When He came most of His ministry was devoted to healing people physically compared to preaching from a pulpit. Does God care about your health? Does God care if you are sick and suffering? We might think, the Lord creates a miracle regardless to what I eat. The Lord just makes a miracle and I can get better.

We want to look at how God heals. Even miraculous healings. How it happens so we can understand that we can’t take His healing for granted if we are healed even without changing our diet, our lifestyles and our health principles. God healed many people who are still unfaithful. They didn’t come back to thank Him. The record says that they ended up getting sick again and died. Jesus’ ministry is concern about our health.

3 John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

My health is connected to salvation. When I experienced God’s salvation, God doesn’t want me to just have forgiven sins, but He wants me to have an enjoyable life.

When God made man He made man with a certain amount of vital power.

John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. John 1:9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

When God made Adam, He made Adam healthy. He didn’t make Adam with cancer. He didn’t make Adam with diabetes or bronchitis or any other disease. The light that God gives is a health giving life and light.

Acts 17:27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

Haply doesn’t mean happy. It means by chance, by chance or haphazardly.

The Vital Force

When God made man, He charged up the battery with vital power. That power came from Him. Jesus Christ is the light and life of man. Light is power and energy. Life is energy. God placed into Adam a healthy power.

God endowed man with so great vital force that he has withstood the accumulation of disease brought upon the race in consequence of perverted habits, and has continued for six thousand years. This fact of itself is enough to evidence to us the strength and electrical energy that God gave to man at his creation. It took more than two thousand years of crime and indulgence of base passions to bring bodily disease upon the race to any great extent. If Adam, at his creation, had not been endowed with twenty times as much vital force as men now have, the race, with their present habits of living in violation of natural law, would have become extinct. At the time of Christ’s first advent the race had degenerated so rapidly that an accumulation of disease pressed upon that generation, bringing in a tide of woe and a weight of misery inexpressible. {3T 138.2}

We are living because of our heart beat and the electrical functionality of our brains. What makes your heart beat? If you turn on the light here it comes from the power lines. The power lines get that power from the transmitter. The transmitter gets its power from the power station. The power station gets its power from matter. All matter has energy. This pulpit here has power and energy. If you put it in the fire, you can warm yourself from it. Where do we get our power from? What matter is it that we get our power from? God. He gives you your heart beat every day. When Adam was formed from the dust. He had all the gear ready to go but he didn’t have power. He wasn’t plugged in, he wasn’t turned on. He wasn’t charged up with this divine power. God came and gave him the power of life and every person living has it. Every man has it. When He first gave it to Adam, the power was so intense, so much better than what we have today that the race could withstand six thousand years of disease because of sin and we are still tagging along. Praise God He put enough charge in Adam. I am so glad for that.

This degeneration, the absence of vital power within the body created disease to become manifested and Christ came and walked among men who were suffering disease because of the lack of vital power and He the power giver can give some more charge. When He gives more charge healing takes place by the delivery of life giving power that our race once had. This is the God who we serve. He has power to give.

God’s Given Vital Power

God has given each one of us a certain charge. We have power given from Him. What are you doing with that vital power?

God has endowed us with a certain amount of vital force. He has also formed us with organs suited to maintain the various functions of life, and He designs that these organs shall work together in harmony. If we carefully preserve the life force, and keep the delicate mechanism of the body in order, the result is health; but if the vital force is too rapidly exhausted, the nervous system borrows power for present use from its resources of strength, and when one organ is injured, all are affected. Nature bears much abuse without apparent resistance; she then arouses and makes a determined effort to remove the effects of the ill-treatment she has suffered. Her effort to correct these conditions is often manifest in fever and various other forms of sickness. {MH 234.3}

Health has to do with my stewardship and the stewardship of my forefathers who I have inherited what they’ve done of the God-given gift. That is vital power of life. I have a certain type of power. There are two types of power. One is ready to be used – victual and the other is vital. It is just like a working account in a bank and a saving account in the bank. If we run off our savings account, the special savings account that we hold on our daily living we’ll run down, become bankrupt and poor and so it is with health. If I decide that in the first forty years of my life I will spend all my health for wealth then I will find that for the last forty years of my life I will spend all my health for wealth. I’ll become bankrupt. I’ll become sick and we will not trace it. You will not realize that when I was ten years old or fifteen years old I was abusing my body and when I become forty I will get struck down with some sickness. I cannot make the connection between my expenditure of vital force way back when I was young, to the lack of it when I am older.

Talents

What are you going to do with your talents? We don’t all get the same amount of talents. Some have five, some have three, some two and some one. This is illustrated in Jesus’ parable of the man who went on a journey and He gave talents to these three and then He came back to see what they had done with it. The biggest talent we have in life is life. No other talent you have is a talent without life. Your vital energy that you have God wants to know what you are doing with it. God wants to come back and say what did you do with the vital energy that I gave you? Some people only have one portion of vital energy. These people manifest as seemingly wicked people. Some of these wicked people have to eat herbs while other people have received talents of vital power, they seem to be strong and they can eat anything.

The people who are strong are saying what is wrong with you? You get sick on that and I don’t. There is nothing wrong with that. We make this comparison between ourselves to justify our habits being okay. We might say, ‘my great uncle Frank smoked cigars from the day he was born to the day he died and he lived to a ripe old age.’ The fact is Mr. Frank had so much more vital energy than most people. That is why he could do it. Suppose he looked after his body, how much longer would he live? You don’t know; but then some think because uncle Frank did that smoking for so long, I can do it to. Before I am thirty I drop dead. What happened? He was just weak. He had less vital power. How much vital power do you have? Whether you have five or one is not the issue. You have some.

Whether you squander your bigger amount and it looks to the world like you can live in this lifestyle, go for weeks without sleep, party on and drink every substance in the world and still be okay, is not a justification that health has nothing to do with your salvation because you are fit. You are actually using your vital force. By the time you are forty you’ve got cancer and you don’t know why. The reason why is that we spend our vital energy before and my body doesn’t have the wherewithal to repair itself. Praise the Lord He gave our bodies with a system that can follow the Lord’s direction and repair itself.

What are you going to do with your vital energy? Don’t mistake this vital energy. That doesn’t mean that we don’t need to go running because if I go running I am using up energy and I don’t want to use it up. It is not like a Duracell battery where you just use it and it is gone. The interesting thing about exercise is that it is sort of like a hybrid electric car that while it is driving it is charging. When we exercise we are expanding energy; but while we are expanding energy we are gaining energy. That sounds like an exchanger. The Bible’s principle was that he that uses what he’s got will get more, but he that doesn’t use what he has, even what he has will be taken away. Suppose I think this sermon is about not exercising, not using energy, it is far from it. It is about vital force. It is not about how much energy you have in the morning. If you go and exercise you’ll gain more available energy for the day saving your vital energy for emergencies.

The two types of energy are; one used that you’d use when running and one is when you’d get some virus or some bacteria in your body. It has to fight it off. It has the wherewithal to deal with it. Whether it comes up with a small ailment or not at all, the body deals with it.

Moses

Moses was faithful in his house and also in his body.

Deuteronomy 34:7 And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died:his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.

He just walked up a mountain the size of Bewah when it was written about him, actually bigger. If you put that is how I was. Then he climbed up at a hundred and twenty years old. His natural force was not abated at a hundred and twenty. There are two ways to die.

Job 21:23 One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet. 24 His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow. 25 And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.

He doesn’t have leukemia, he dies in his full strength without the natural force abated. Which way do want to die? How are you using your power? Do you want to end up in a suffering state when you are older or do you want to die in the best way? You just go to sleep and no pain and with happiness.

Principles on Health and Salvation

We are accountable to God how we use our vital power. That is dependent on how my habits are in my life.

Children are generally untaught in regard to the importance of when, how, and what they should eat. They are permitted to indulge their tastes freely, to eat at all hours, to help themselves to fruit when it tempts their eyes, and this, with the pie, cake, bread and butter, and sweetmeats eaten almost constantly, makes them gormands and dyspeptics. The digestive organs, like a mill which is continually kept running, become enfeebled, vital force is called from the brain to aid the stomach in its overwork, and thus the mental powers are weakened. The unnatural stimulation and wear of the vital forces make them nervous, impatient of restraint, self-willed, and irritable. They can scarcely be trusted out of their parents’ sight. In many cases the moral powers seem deadened, and it is difficult to arouse them to a sense of the shame and grievous nature of sin; they slip easily into habits of prevarication, deceit, and often open lying. {HR May 1, 1877 Par. 7}

It sounds like most children’s problems today. Where does it come from? We think maybe they need to go to the doctor and take some ADHD tablets and just let them calm down when actually what the problem is habits of life. The children are losing the vital power at a young age. It is from snacking. Even fruit between meals makes the stomach constantly working. It creates nervousness or irritability and impatience. Has patience got anything to do with my salvation? It is part of three angels’ messages. It is a description of God’s last day people. It is a gift of the Spirit. It hinges on my stewardship of how I use my time and my means.

Since a healthy state of mind depends upon the normal condition of the vital forces, what care should be exercised that neither stimulants nor narcotics be used! Yet we see that a large number of those who profess to be Christians are using tobacco. They deplore the evils of intemperance; yet while speaking against the use of liquors, these very men will eject the juice of tobacco. There must be change of sentiment with reference to tobacco using before the root of the evil will be reached. We press the subject still closer. Tea and coffee are fostering the appetite for stronger stimulants. And then we come still closer home, to the preparation of food, and ask, Is temperance practiced in all things? Are the reforms which are essential to health and happiness carried out here? {CD 426.4}

Is coffee and tea considered strong stimulants today? No. Back then in the 1800s the generations were using tea and coffee as a predominant stimulant. Now it is like the Redbull and all these other drinks that just blows your socks off because we want higher stimulation. When we get the energy kick from these drinks where does that energy come from? Is it my working bank account or my savings account? It is coming from your saving, your vital energy. Whenever you get a five minutes boost you will be suffering for ten years in some sickness at the end of your life because of it:But we can’t see that far. We can’t make that connection. So much time lapses between habits as a young person to when we become old and we can’t draw the connection of what we have done. Then we just scratch our heads and say, why am I ill?

The Preparation of Food

Even the preparation of food is essential. What did God direct in the preparation of meat for the Jewish people? Get rid of the blood and fat. Was that ever carried over to the New Testament church? It was. When you see in Acts 15 the council of Jerusalem about the Law of Moses and circumcision the Apostle said, don’t worry about circumcision. Leave these things alone but make sure that people avoid fornication. Don’t eat blood and things that are strangled and things offered to idols. These things are carried forward into the Christian church. That means red meat is not Christian according to the apostles.

Overeating

Does overeating even of the good food do the same thing? Even good food can cause the problem. It is not so much about food, it is about my lust for the food. That lust comes from a thought and that thought can defile your heart. Your salvation is dependent upon that.

When those who are in the habit of using tea, coffee, tobacco, opium, or spirituous liquors are deprived of the accustomed indulgence, they find it impossible to engage with interest and zeal in the worship of God. Divine grace seems powerless to enliven or spiritualize their prayers or their testimonies. These professed Christians should consider the source of their enjoyment. Is it from above, or from beneath? {SL 32.3}

Nowhere in the Bible does it say thou shall not have caffeine; but does caffeine affect my brain functionality? You would say, marijuana does. Heroin would; but does caffeine? You look at the medical research done on caffeine and you’ll find that it does the same amount of damage. It manifested in a different way but still the same damage. Because it is manifested in a different way we think it is okay. It is a sociably acceptable drug when mentally my ability to worship God is dependent on my brain. You can’t get away from that fact. That use can impair my worship with God. Not that I am saved because I abstain from such a thing but I am saved through my worship, adoration and acceptance of Jesus Christ.

Many parents do not obtain the knowledge that they should in the married life. They are not guarded lest Satan take advantage of them and control their minds and their lives. They do not see that God requires them to control their married lives from any excesses. But very few feel it to be a religious duty to govern their passions. They have united themselves in marriage to the object of their choice, and therefore reason that marriage sanctifies the indulgence of the baser passions. Even men and women professing godliness give loose rein to their lustful passions, and have no thought that God holds them accountable for the expenditure of vital energy, which weakens their hold on life and enervates the entire system. {2T 472.2}

It is not just about food or drinking. It is about intemperance as a whole. In the case of marriage intercourse where it is indulged, it breaks the life force and we are accountable to God.  The Bible says flee fornication because it is the sin against your body. It drains your life force.

Divine love increases vital energy. Without wedlock, without that divine love that should be in wedlock, it will become a burden to the body. We are responsible to God for the use of our vital energy, whatever it is.

Intemperance in eating and drinking, intemperance in labor, intemperance in almost everything, exists on every hand. Those who make great exertions to accomplish just so much work in a given time, and continue to labor when their judgment tells them they should rest, are never gainers. They are living on borrowed capital. They are expending the vital force which they will need at a future time. And when the energy they have so recklessly used is demanded, they fail for want of it. The physical strength is gone, the mental powers fail. They realize that they have met with a loss, but do not know what it is. Their time of need has come, but their physical resources are exhausted. Everyone who violates the laws of health must sometime be a sufferer to a greater or less degree. God has provided us with constitutional force, which will be needed at different periods of our life. If we recklessly exhaust this force by continual overtaxation, we shall sometime be losers. Our usefulness will be lessened, if not our life itself destroyed. {CH 99.1}

Some may say, ‘I am so busy. I can’t get everything done.’ Sleep is so important. When God helps us and we rest we’ll be more effective to do better work the next day and accomplish more, but if we are not good in our time management and we squander those good times, the problem isn’t solved by staying up late. The problem is solved by sorting out my time management when things are okay in the morning before the day catches up on me. If I simply have crammed too much in the day I just have to offload.

Some may say Jesus stayed up all night. Didn’t He? Wasn’t that intemperance of Him? Didn’t Jesus overdo His work when His mothers and brothers were saying ‘have a break, you are warring yourself up. His disciples were telling Him at least come and eat and He wouldn’t even stop to eat.

When does God want you to use your vital power? Is it wrong to use your vital power? There is a time God has appointed for us to use our vital power. He doesn’t design that vital power is used just in coping with disease that were put upon myself when I was young. Jesus Christ spent all for our salvation but for Him to spend His entire energy for you salvation for three years, He had to be temperate when He was a young boy. Jesus obeyed the laws. He didn’t make going to bed the point of salvation. He would sacrifice in His ministry and use His vital energy to save souls when God appointed Him to, therefore it is okay. But when it is not time to use that, He had to sleep. He had to rest. He had to obey God. We are not saying that if you go past a certain hour you are now a sinner because Christ went past that hour. Is He a sinner? No, but when God only wants me to use my virtual energy, the energy I have currently I must only use that.

When God requires me to use my vital energy for the ministry or some emergencies or for some needs for salvation and I use it, God will bless me for it. God is the life giver. I thank the Lord that He did spend all. Christ was spent for you and me. He spent His working account and His savings account for your salvation. Praise Him for that. You may think this is a bit of a discouraging message because I am well in my life now and I have messed up. I wrecked my life up before I was forty and I am suffering for it. There is good hope. King Hezekiah wrecked his life a little. He was ready to die. He was on his death bed. Isaiah came and said, ‘You will die. Finish, your battery is empty. You’ve got no more. You spent what I gave you.’ Hezekiah wept bitterly. He cried before the Lord. He said, ‘Lord, please give me a little more charge.’ God granted him.

Isaiah 38:5 Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the Lord , the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears:behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.

God chooses to just top up your power. He can do that because He is power. He is the life. He doesn’t have to go and get it from somewhere. That is Him. He gave it to Hezekiah. He said, it will only last for fifteen years. That is how much I gave you. The interesting thing about this miracle is God chose to use a natural remedy to be the mechanism to supply the fifteen years – the fig poultice. He had to put the fig poultice on the boil that he was suffering from. Let us not think that God gives me power and I don’t have to do anything. I may have to go and prepare a poultice if I want to be healed. I may have to go and prepare for some natural remedy if I want to be healed but be it known that the power doesn’t come from the natural remedy. The power comes from God. God also can give you power without the natural remedy. He has done that before.

God also may not give any more power with the natural remedy because it is all about how much God wants to do with His power. If He says ‘No. I have given you vital energy and that is it’ and you repent, the best outcome is your salvation whether you don’t get topped up in the earthly sense for more power, more vital energy for your body to be ran. It is interesting the signs behind that because a lot of your body’s energy is heavily relied upon the electrolytes in your blood. The power within your body to recover and utilise the minerals and the elements that we need. You don’t get health from a hospital. You get medical care but not health from a hospital. Health does not come from pharmaceuticals. Christ came to give life.

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

All stimulants and all activities that drain my vital power for no use are thieves and robbers. They are an evil thing. If we lust after evil things the example is there in the scripture that it will be done unto us because these things happened unto them for examples to us today. It is not just a nice Old Testament story. Jesus has come not to take your life away; I am come that they might have life. The medical profession can keep your heart ticking along with their little probes. That is not a life though. Christ came to give life and life more abundantly, enjoyable life. One of the most precious gifts that we often take for granted that make us enjoy life is health. If you get sick you realize that you can’t enjoy a nice day, I can’t enjoy the activities of my friends, I can’t enjoy fellowship because I am sick. God didn’t intend it that way. God intended that we have life and life more abundantly. He has power to heal through methods but He also has a life to calm which is so abundant that even if we are not healed God doesn’t choose to heal us in this present age. We need to secure the life which is abundant. It is called eternal life. You can’t get more abundant than that.

There are biblical requirements that God is saying, listen to what I am saying to you in relation to your health.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. 7 Be not wise in thine own eyes:fear the Lord , and depart from evil. 8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

This is required when it comes to following God’s way. When God requires us in a time to fast in the last days, to abstain from flesh meet, from stimulants, from pleasures, from excitement that break away our life force and we think, ‘why do I have to do that? I don’t understand, and because I don’t understand I will not do it. The text says don’t lean on your own understanding. If God says, ‘I call for a fast’, then what should we do? We should fast. If God says, ‘I call for abstinence we should abstain. Should we think, ‘I want to try and work this out biblically? They ate meat in the Old Testament. I can do it too.’ Don’t lean on your own understanding. They had more vital power than you do. Their meat was better than your meat. Just work the equation out. I have less vital power, I have more pollution, it is time for abstinence. It wasn’t then. It is now because I need to have a wise use of my capital energy.

Psalm 42:5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God:for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

One of the main medicines that will heal us is Jesus Christ Himself. If you view God as angry with you, what does that do internally? It causes you to be stressed, feel guilty, have grief and have sorrow and these elements make you sick. Your view of God determines to a huge portion your health. Here he is saying, why am I so sad? Why am I disquieted? Why am I so negative? I want to thank the Lord for the help of His countenance. When you are sad a compassionate and a loving countenance makes you feel better. The best remedy is to understand that God is a compassionate and a loving God. When we absorb that mentally it will be a medicine.

Psalm 42:11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

The health of my face doesn’t come from super grown broccoli. It comes from Jesus Christ. It’s good to eat super grown broccoli but Jesus is the source of my health. I can eat broccoli all day long. I can be a tree hugging supper vegan and yet be stressed out of my brains because I don’t have relationship with Jesus and sick of anything. Then people will say, I don’t want to have that sort of diet. Look at how miserable they look. It is a wrong misrepresentation because health comes from the Lord and obeying His requirements with an understanding that God is compassionate. Not a critical scrutinizing judging God that will just pick up every little fault you have. It is someone who wants to improve your life that will show His love to you in connection with obedience of His requirements through love. One of the best medicines for our brain, the electrical power of our brain is the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The influence of the mind on the body, as well as of the body on the mind, should be emphasized. The electric power of the brain, promoted by mental activity, vitalizes the whole system, and is thus an invaluable aid in resisting disease. This should be made plain. The power of the will and the importance of self-control, both in the preservation and in the recovery of health, the depressing and even ruinous effect of anger, discontent, selfishness, or impurity, and, on the other hand, the marvelous life-giving power to be found in cheerfulness, unselfishness, gratitude, should also be shown. {Ed 197.2}

Often plausible effect is sometimes a really good medicine because it is mental. Your mind stimulates things. There is a glimpse of hope and that hope activates my vital power to heal; but plausible don’t do it the best way. Jesus Christ does it the best way to activate your hope. This is where the woman reached out in faith and touched the garment.

As He was passing, she reached forward and succeeded in barely touching the border of His garment. That moment she knew that she was healed. In that one touch was concentrated the faith of her life, and instantly her pain and feebleness disappeared. Instantly she felt the thrill as of an electric current passing through every fiber of her being. There came over her a sensation of perfect health. “She felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.” Verse 29. {MH 60.2}

She had a faith that understood something mentally, what took place.

That grasp of Jesus’ compassion and willingness to heal her healed her as she grasped Him. Hundreds of people had touched Jesus that day but only one was healed. Is it possible that we may not be touching Jesus correctly? We may not be relating to Jesus correctly to be healed. We may not be receiving that vitalizing power that the gospel gives. If we are not we need to seek it.

The power of love was in all Christ’s healing, and only by partaking of that love, through faith, can we be instruments for His work. If we neglect to link ourselves in divine connection with Christ, the current of life-giving energy cannot flow in rich streams from us to the people. There were places where the Saviour Himself could not do many mighty works because of their unbelief. So now unbelief separates the church from her divine Helper. Her hold upon eternal realities is weak. By her lack of faith, God is disappointed, and robbed of His glory. {DA 825.1}

Unbelief breaks the link of healing. There are two forms of unbelief. Firstly I can have unbelief of God and His love or I may believe God and His love but I may not believe His requirements. I might say, ‘I don’t believe God requires us to be healthy. I don’t believe God has a desire in our health and in our diet and lifestyle but I believe that He loves me.’ Unbelief is the problem right there. I must make sure that my belief is holistic if I want to have a holistic healing. That is the following of His will and the appreciation of His love towards me. When these things are merged together with the obedience to the laws of life healing is highly likely but not in all cases because sometimes God won’t just give the power because He would rather the person go to sleep. We must be willing for that too. We need to believe that God has my best interest in mind and only my best interests. That is believing.

The love which Christ diffuses through the whole being is a vitalizing power. Every vital part—the brain, the heart, the nerves—it touches with healing. By it the highest energies of the being are roused to activity. It frees the soul from the guilt and sorrow, the anxiety and care, that crush the life forces. With it come serenity and composure. It implants in the soul, joy that nothing earthly can destroy—joy in the Holy Spirit—health-giving, life-giving, joy. {RY 131.2}

The kingdom of heaven is not meat and drink. That statement doesn’t mean I can eat and drink whatever I like. The Bible says whether I eat or drink I must do all to the glory of God but the kingdom of heaven is joy and peace in the Holy Ghost. These are medicines that come through obedience, surrender and trust in the word of God and its care for me.

There is a physiological truth—truth that we need to consider—in the scripture, “A merry rejoicing heart doeth good like a medicine.” Proverbs 17:22. {Ed 197.3} “Let thine heart keep My commandments,” God says; “for length of days, and years of life, and peace, shall they add to thee.” “They are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.” “Pleasant words” the Scriptures declare to be not only “sweet to the soul,” but “health to the bones.” Proverbs 3:1, 2, margin; 4:22; 16:24. {Ed 197.4}

It is not frivolity. It is not just cracking jokes and having a laugh because after it is all gone you feel down. This merry heart is the joy coming from the Holy Ghost. It does good like a medicine.

Has my health got anything to do with salvation?

1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

May the Lord help us to hold on to Jesus in all of our health activities that He is the center and that He may make us prosperous in Jesus’ name.

Amen.
