Fear and Manipulation

Audio: mp3

Isaiah 8:11-13 For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying, Say ye not, A confederacy, to all [them to] whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid. Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and [let] him [be] your fear, and [let] him [be] your dread.

Are you waiting for a one world order? There is already a one world order. There is already one state with one government. That state has been since the days of paradise, since the days of Eden. It is the state of fear and fear is its dictator. Oh fair Eden, fair paradise! Declared by God Himself to be good, yea, but more, even very good. The dwelling place of Man created in the image of God, created in the image of Him who is love. See Him if you will. Man in his perfection, in his purity, in his innocence walking with his Creator in the cool of the day. How sweet is their communion, how close their friendship. What joy! What happiness! What peace and then see him run. Hear the pounding of his feet upon the ground, his rapid breathing as he makes his flight. The pounding of his heart as the adrenalin pumps through his veins, and then he is gone.

Genesis 3:9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where [art] thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid.

Fear rules. Are you afraid? Does fear rule you? I have entitled our study today, Fear and Manipulation. Fear is power but it is not God’s power. It is the power of Satan. Satan has the whole world united under this one government. This one government of fear and as long as fear reigns, everyone in this world will do his bidding, regardless of nationality, or culture.

Hebrews 2:14, 15 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

We confess that we are strangers and pilgrims on the earth yet how many of us are still mindful of that country from which we have come out? Departed from Egypt in body but still under its bondage in mind. The scriptures declare that we sit in heavenly places and that our names are enrolled in Zion’s registrar. Yet, are we free from our former bondage? Do we still feel the tyrannical rule of fear? If so, come out of her my people! We grew up in this state of fear. Superstition was our taskmaster yet we did not tremble. It was all that we knew. To us it was normal. It was life. But we must come out from amongst them.

Isaiah 52:11, 12 Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean [thing]; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD. For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel [will be] your rereward.

Jeremiah 42:11 Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the LORD: for I [am] with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.

There are many ways that man is ruled by fear. Are you afraid of the dark? The dark has long been associated with fear and truly the Dark Ages were an age of fear. The 1260 years of Papal rule. Obey or die! The consciences of man were ruled by the threat of imprisonment and death and because the people feared the dungeons and to die, they obeyed. It seems that it was such a blatant rule of fear that nobody could miss. But nothing has changed. We have just grown up in it and to us it’s normal. So normal that we don’t even stop to think that we are ruled by fear. We must wake up to the fact that if we are not careful, we will be manipulated by fear every moment of the day. There are many ways that man is controlled by fear. I will cite a few. Perhaps you will think of others. I hope so because if you cannot discern in your life where it is that you are ruled by fear, then you are in a bad State.

Have you heard it said I went to see my doctor? My doctor? My lifeline. My physician. When I am sick, I go to him. What he tells me to do I do. What he prescribes I take. I am afraid that if I don’t then I will get sicker. I am afraid that if I don’t go to him I will get sick. I was afraid, so I went to see my doctor.

A few years ago there was some ruffling in Australia by a Muslim cleric and this caused some concern amongst the public and the government over the values of Australians. One high ranking minister in the government at the time declared that if those that live in Australia will not conform to Australian law and submit to Australian values, then you can get out of the country. And so I had better keep my mouth closed. What about the damage being done to the environment? The greenhouse effect. Global warming. Melting ice caps and rising seas. Droughts and flooding. Storms and fires. I was afraid so I bought a bicycle.

Go to Hell

There was an article in the news entitled: Pope says: recycle or go to hell! And hell? Oh hell, I am afraid of hell. Listen to hell as defined by the Protestants of today:

I had been taught to believe in an eternally burning hell, and the horrifying thought was ever before me that my sins were too great to be forgiven, and that I should be forever lost. The frightful descriptions that I had heard of souls lost in perdition sank deep into my mind. Ministers in the pulpit drew vivid pictures of the condition of the damned. They taught that God never proposed to save any but the sanctified. The eye of God was upon us always; every sin was registered and would meet its just punishment. God himself was keeping the books with the exactitude of infinite wisdom, and every sin we committed was faithfully recorded against us. LS 151

The devil was represented as eager to seize upon his prey and bear us to the lowest depths of anguish, there to exult over our sufferings in the horrors of an eternally burning hell, where, after the tortures of thousands upon thousands of years, the fiery billows would roll to the surface the writhing victims, who would shriek, ‘How long, O Lord, how long?’ Then the answer would thunder down the abyss, ‘Through all eternity!’ Again the molten waves would engulf the lost, carrying them down into the depths of an ever restless sea of fire. While listening to these terrible descriptions, my imagination would be so wrought upon that the perspiration would start from every pore, and it was difficult to suppress a cry of anguish, for I seemed to already feel the pains of perdition. Then the minister would dwell upon the uncertainty of life. One moment we might be here, and the next in hell, or one moment on earth, and the next in heaven. Would we choose the lake of fire and the company of demons, or the bliss of heaven with angels for our companions. Would we hear the voice of wailing and the cursing of lost souls through all eternity, or sing the songs of Jesus before the throne. LS 151.

Yea, the fear of an eternally burning hell scares many an infidel into becoming a Christian. But oh how many render but a lip-service, the shaking quivering next to useless lip.

I am only here because I was afraid.

Yea, it is a start, but how few find the true motivation that comes from the reconciling love of God and the atonement of Jesus Christ. The thing that constantly baffles my mind is how subtle fear is. Though a stern dictator, yet so quietly and so muffled are fear’s movements. Though we live in a Reign of Terror as was France during the revolution, and there are multitudes perishing around us, yet we wake not to our danger. Satan holds a gun to our heads, and we are insensible to it. Behold how subtle the manipulations of the Devil are. How he reigns through fear. He takes man, wise, intelligent man, places in his hand a microscope and sends him into the darkroom. He makes before the mind’s eye, the negatives to be so big, so huge, that surely, without a doubt, that molehill is a mountain! See how he manipulates, how he scares you into doing his will. Yea, even more so, how he scares thee into manipulation itself!

David did lie with Bathsheba. But oh what Consequences! Who would have thought that she would fall pregnant? Now her husband will know. Now He cannot hide his sin. Aaaah, says David, I will manipulate things so that I can never be found out. I will call him back from the frontier and he will be so glad to see his wife surely my sin can be covered.

2 Samuel And David sent to Joab, [saying], Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and there followed him a mess [of meat] from the king.

But alas, that man was loyal.

2 Samuel 11:9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house. 10 And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from [thy] journey? why [then] didst thou not go down unto thine house? 11 And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? [as] thou livest, and [as] thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

Aaah, says David, it’s not working. I must be more cunning.

2 Samuel 11:12 And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow. 13 And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.

Oh poor desperate David. What could he do now?

2 Samuel 11:14 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent [it] by the hand of Uriah. 15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die. 16 And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men [were]. 17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell [some] of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

I was afraid, so I tried to manipulate the circumstances and thus allay the consequences.

Man fears consequences. Yea, surely it is as a fiend unto him! An arch-enemy! A formidable foe that he must somehow get around, sneak past, ignore. No. He will not confront him to his face. He is afraid of consequences.

Genesis 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest [to be] with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

She did it. It was her fault.

Genesis 3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What [is] this [that] thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

It’s not my fault. You made the serpent! It’s all your fault God! I was afraid of Accountability.

The governments of this world rule by fear. They manipulate their masses into obeying them by fear. They know that for the sake of a sense of safety the populous will give up their liberties.

Herman Goering, second in charge of the Third Reich, Hitler’s own appointed successor said this during the Nuremburg trials in 1946:

Naturally the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.

Tell the people Terrorist. Terrorist! and they will gladly hand over their rights. Yea, more so, they will hand over their best friend and even their brother! How subtle are the superstitions that we have grown up with? The mentalities that govern our daily lives. The early neoconservatives in the American Government during the late 60s wanted to unite the people and give them a shared purpose in life. And so they set about to recreate the myth that the American nation had a destiny to battle against the evil in the world. But who was the evil foe? America’s cold war enemy, the USSR.

However in 1972 President Nixon signed a nuclear treaty with Russia which should have ended the cold war. Nixon proclaimed that through his efforts he had helped to create a world with less fear. But how could the people of America be united without an enemy? A world without fear was not what the neoconservatives wanted. They got to work to make the USSR look like an enemy. The CIA monitored Russia continually, and declared that there was no threat. But, said the neoconservatives, we can prove that there is. An independent enquiry was established and the CIA data on the Soviet Union was examined. But no matter how closely they looked, they could find little to back up their claims that they were developing dangerous weapons and defense systems.

How could they prolong this cold war? How could they arouse and unite the American people to fight this evil?

Fear and Manipulation.

Just because we can find no proof of its existence, they said, it does not mean they are not there. It just means that they are more sophisticated that we thought and so technologically advanced that they are undetectable.

For example, there was no evidence that the Soviet submarine fleet had an acoustic defence system, but what this meant, they said, was that the Soviets had invented a new non-acoustic system which was impossible to detect and that therefore the whole of the American submarine fleet was at risk from an invisible threat, even though there was no proof.

I was afraid that you might not be afraid so I manipulated the facts to make you afraid.

Does this mentality rule in our world today? Are we afraid to do this or afraid to do that because this or that might happen? Even if the chances of it happening are so slim? Simple little tricks on the imagination to keep us in a State of Fear. I remember as a child that I was a very scared little boy. I read a lot of books about monsters and fiends and so my imagination was very vivid. Each night I would open up my cupboard and check to see if anyone or anything was there. I would look behind my drawers, and under my bed. Then I would turn the light off and run to my bed and then lie there very still waiting, listening. It was a stupid habit. Completely stupid. So one night I would say come one, you have to get over this, and I would turn my light off, casually make my way through the darkness to my bed lie down and close my eyes. And then I would think, it just might be that one night that I don’t check.

Oh may God save us from this state of fear! Satan has got us wrapped around his little finger. How must he laugh when he sees man falling for his lies. Truly we are a game and a sport to him. How are you going with the dress reform? Oh, yes, some people are afraid of those words. Are you doing the dress reform perfectly as God intended? If not why not? I can tell you why not. Because you are afraid. Examine your heart. You think that its going too far and the reason that you think that is because you know that there are others that will think that and you are afraid of them thinking that.

I was afraid that someone might laugh.

Why have you not yet given up this food, or that food? Because you are afraid that you health will not be so good as it is now? Or you are afraid that it won’t taste very nice? Or perhaps you are afraid of having some warfare with your own natural appetite? Afraid that you will miss out on the taste of all those delicacies you used to enjoy?

I was afraid I would no longer be able to enjoy my food…

You take up your cross to follow Jesus, but you find that your silken cords of affection bind you about. Your family. Oh family of thy flesh, how dangerous, art thou to thy dreams of Paradise! How skilled thou are in the art of emotional manipulation. Many a soul has been shipwrecked upon the rocks by the icy blast of the cold shoulder, many a promising life burnt to ashes in the fires of passion, and many a hopeful heart drowned in the tears of sorrow.

I was afraid I might be alone…

Why art thou afraid? Why dost thou fear? Let u not just read it, but BELIEVE it.

Hebrews 2:14,15 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Has not Jesus delivered us from this bondage of fear? If Jesus has delivered us from this bondage, why are we afraid?

Psalm 53:5 There were they in great fear, [where] no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth [against] thee: thou hast put [them] to shame, because God hath despised them.

There were they in GREAT fear where no fear was. Are you afraid of nothing?

Isaiah 51:12-16 I, [even] I, [am] he that comforteth you: who [art] thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man [that] shall die, and of the son of man [which] shall be made [as] grass; And forgettest the LORD thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where [is] the fury of the oppressor? But I [am] the LORD thy God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: The LORD of hosts [is] his name. And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou [art] my people.

If we will walk in the way which God’s leads, we have nothing to fear. As the Spirit testifies;

Christ’s ambassadors have nothing to do with consequences. They must perform their duty and leave results with God. GC 609-610

Will you be afraid and run and hide yourself? Hide in the shadow of the hand of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Minds must not be diverted from God to man. We must not fear the fear of the wicked, and allow our consciences to be manipulated by men. LLM 325.2

We must not fear the fear of the wicked. We must not fear that which they fear. We must not fear pain, persecution and even death. Like Luther, like Huss and Jerome, like Wycliffe, like the reformers in the first and second world wars, and like Jesus before Pilate, we will stand before the hosts of the whole world without fear.

There is another fear that we are not to fear. That is the fear that is the most subtle, the most painful, and the most terrible of all.

We have far more to fear from within than from without. 1SM 122.3

As men rejoice in the freedom which the truth brings them, they are inclined to extol those whom God has employed to break the chains of error and superstition. Satan seeks to divert men’s thoughts and affections from God, and to fix them upon human agencies; he leads them to honor the mere instrument and to ignore the Hand that directs all the events of providence. Too often religious leaders who are thus praised and reverenced lose sight of their dependence upon God and are led to trust in themselves. As a result they seek to control the minds and consciences of the people, who are disposed to look to them for guidance instead of looking to the word of God. {GC 169.2}

Satan has been bearing rule in many minds. He will work through those who can be easily exalted and led to exercise their capabilities to repress or exalt others. The time has come when we must keep firm hold of the strong arm of Jehovah; for every species of delusion is being exercised. The prince of darkness is working through the minds of men who, in their lack of spiritual discernment, suppose that they are to rule the experience of the Lord’s little children, who are to look to God in a living, simple working faith. {LLM 325.2}

When one is placed as a leader of a conference or a union, how great is the temptation to use fear to manipulate.

When a man is placed as president of a conference, it is not to be supposed that he is to mold and fashion the minds of the workers in that conference after his own human ideas; and that if men do not follow his ideas, they may be brought to terms by his saying to them, You cannot receive wages from this conference unless you do as I tell you. {LLM 324.2}

By their fruits you shall know them and men who take up such a position as this toward the their fellow men will rule by fear and manipulation.

These men are carrying on their counsels, and acting as though God in person had spoken by them. They bear themselves loftily toward the purchase of Christ’s blood. They act as though every individual must acknowledge their sway, and use his ability and talent as they may direct. If he will not come under their control they crush him out or treat him with indifference. They consider it is an abomination to be unsubmissive, and those who do not submit to their jurisdiction are left without sympathy, without help or support. They say by their spirit and action, If he dies, let him die. {1888 1370.2}

Oh may God save us from such men. Yea, much more, may God save us from being afraid of such men.

Multitudes are kept in great spiritual darkness by the authority of man. Will you permit them to shield thee from the light of heaven, or will you declare, one is our master, even Christ?

Isaiah 52:2 Shake thyself from the dust; arise, [and] sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

Will you be satisfied with the mere authority of men, or will you demand a plain Thus saith the Lord?

…the popular ministry, like the Pharisees of old, filled with anger as their authority is questioned, will denounce the message as of Satan and stir up the sin-loving multitudes to revile and persecute those who proclaim it. {GC 606.2}

And they will do all in their power to stop you from hearing the truth, or from sharing it with others. But for such men it is written:

Isaiah 8:9-14 Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces. Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God [is] with us. For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying, Say ye not, A confederacy, to all [them to] whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid. Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and [let] him [be] your fear, and [let] him [be] your dread. And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Say ye not a confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say a confederacy, neither fear ye their fear nor be afraid.

What is their fear?–It is that if they obey the commandments of God, they will be despised and ridiculed; if they come out from the world, they will be left to suffer want. Such a fear reveals unbelief in him who provides all our blessings. He sends the showers upon our lands, and permits the sun to shine, that vegetation may flourish. One word from God could withdraw the rain and cut off our supplies of food. With locust and pestilence he could destroy our crops. The Lord has borne long with the perversity of men; but he has their deeds written in the books of heaven, and will repay for their unrighteousness and disregard of his commandments. RH, January 24, 1899 par. 13

Isaiah 66:5 Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.

Are you afraid where no fear is?

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

1 John 4:17-18 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love. There is no fear in that love, for perfect love casteth out all fear.

Let us not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. Though a thousand may fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; it shall not come nigh thee.
