Why Cheese Should Never be Introduced into the Stomach

“Divine inspiration over 100 years ago said that the effect of cheese is deleterious (harmful, toxic, damaging, adverse, detrimental). Science today finds that actually it gives the same effect as morphine.” Paul Godfrey

We may take food that is already poisonous, such as cheese, for instance. A very small piece of cheese contains millions of germs and germ poisons. It is simply decayed milk. {February 11, 1895 N/A, GCB 92.1}
But says one, “I have eaten cheese all my life, and it never hurt me.” If you have not been able to notice the injurious effects of it, it is because your liver has been able to destroy the poison. These injurious practices may sometimes be carried on for a long time, but there comes a time by and by when the over-worked system fails, and the health is gone. {February 11, 1895 N/A, GCB 92.2}
[A chart was exhibited before the delegates, representing the condition of the chemical processes of stomach digestion, as determined by exact chemical analysis of the stomach fluid obtained after a test breakfast, based upon the study of the fluids of over 4000 stomachs.] {February 11, 1895 N/A, GCB 92.3}
By the aid of these investigations many scientific facts have been revealed. We are able to learn with certainty the exact condition of the sufferer from indigestion, and to prescribe the proper treatment and dietary. {February 11, 1895 N/A, GCB 92.4}

Cheese is still more objectionable; it is wholly unfit for food. {CD 368.5} [C.T.B.H. 46, 47] (1890) C.H. 114

Tell them that the time will soon come when there will be no safety in using eggs, milk, cream, or butter, because disease in animals is increasing in proportion to the increase of wickedness among men. The time is near when, because of the iniquity of the fallen race, the whole animal creation will groan under the diseases that curse our earth.—Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7, p. 135.

Your father and I have dropped milk, cream, butter, sugar, and meat entirely since we came to California. We are far clearer in mind and far better in body. {14MR 322.2}

Soon butter will never be recommended, and after a time milk will be entirely discarded; for disease in animals is increasing in proportion to the increase of wickedness among men. The time will come when there will be no safety in using eggs, milk, cream, or butter.–Letter 14, 1901, p. 3. (To Dr. S. Rand, January 22, 1901.) 8MR 384

The light given me is that it will not be very long before we shall have to give up using any animal food. Even milk will have to be discarded. Disease is accumulating rapidly. The curse of God is upon the earth, because man has cursed it. The habits and practices of men have brought the earth into such a condition that some other food than animal food must be substituted for the human family. We do not need flesh food at all. God can give us something else. AUCR JUL.28,1899

God has furnished man with abundant means for the gratification of an unperverted appetite. He has spread before him the products of the earth,–a bountiful variety of food that is palatable to the taste and nutritious to the system. Of these our benevolent heavenly Father says we may freely eat. Fruits, grains, and vegetables, prepared in a simple way, free from spice and grease of all kinds, make, with milk or cream, the most healthful diet. They impart nourishment to the body, and give a power of endurance and a vigour of intellect that are not produced by a stimulating diet. [ [C.T.B.H. 47] (1890) ] CD 092

The Lord has now provided soy:

We see that cattle are becoming greatly diseased, the earth itself is corrupted, and we know that the time will come when it will not be best to use milk and eggs. But that time has not yet come. We know that when it does come, the Lord will provide. The question is asked, meaning much to all concerned, Will God set a table in the wilderness? I think the answer may be made, Yea, God will provide food for His people. [Letter 151, 1901] CD 359

I use a little boiled milk in my simple homemade coffee, but discard cream and butter and strictly adhere to a limited amount of food. I am scarcely ever hungry, and never know what it is to have a feverish, disagreeable feeling in my stomach. I have no bad taste in my mouth. {SpM 39.3}

The Pioneers

Cheese is always more or less difficult of digestion, beside being frequently colored by poisonous substances, as annato, arsenic, etc. Old cheese should never be used. Cheese not more than three months old made of milk from which the cream has been mostly taken, is most easily digested. But, of cheese in general, it would be well for all to keep in mind the old adage, {1868 JNL, HBH 190.6}

“Cheese is a mighty elf, Digesting all things but itself.” Old cheese is exceedingly obnoxious as an aliment. What of curds, and Dutch cheese? {1868 JNL, HBH 191.3}

Curds made of fresh milk, and pot-cheese made of milk as soon as it sours, before it becomes bitter, are not very objectionable. {1868 JNL, HBH 191.4}

Certain foods always contain germs. After meat is twenty-four hours old, it always contains germs, besides the poisons of which we have spoken. Cheese always contains germs in great numbers. When six weeks old, a bit of cheese as large as grain of wheat contains thousands of germs. The germs increase as the cheese becomes older. {February 15, 1895 N/A, GCB 170.9}

Milk always contains germs; not that the cows necessarily have tuberculosis, but from other causes. They get into the milk while the milking is being done. This is why milk does not agree with many people. Their stomachs have not the strength to destroy the germs and digest the milk. {February 15, 1895 N/A, GCB 170.10}

Now if we persist in taking in food and drink that are filled with germs, such as meat and cheese and unsterilized milk and butter may we not expect that when a severe strain is brought upon us, or when some contagious disease is prevalent, the body will be so overtaxed that we shall not be able to resist an attack? If the antiseptic powers of our bodies are taxed all the time to their utmost capacity, we are entirely unprepared for an emergency. The body can offer little or no resistance to disease. {February 17, 1895 N/A, GCB 184.1}

The resistance of the body against germs is lessened by starvation. Experiments have been performed upon the pigeon. Under normal conditions, the pigeon will not take certain kinds of disease. But a pigeon kept without food for a week, then inoculated with the same germs, will die in a very short time of the disease. {February 17, 1895 N/A, GCB 184.2}

Abstinence from food reduces the power of resistance against disease germs. Most of you know that it is not best to go where there is a contagious disease when you have an empty stomach. Indigestion likewise lessens the resistance of the body to disease for the same reason that lack of food does. Loss of sleep and loss of blood lessen the capabilities of the body to resist germs. You may have noticed that one is pale from loss of sleep. The blood corpuscles that destroy the germs are not active, but are “loafing,” we might say, in the interior of the body. The pale, thin blood is a prey to germs. {February 17, 1895 N/A, GCB 184.3}

Overeating and the eating of bad food decreases resistance to germs. The use of meat, cheese, oysters, and other food that is swarming with germs, of course reduces resistance against germs, by clogging the system. {February 17, 1895 N/A, GCB 184.4}

Cheese is not a suitable food for man. While it contains desirable food elements these have associated with them undesirable substances which are irritating, and produce a feverish state of the system. {May 30, 1909 WASe, GCB 217.19}

The free use of butter retards digestion, and favors the cultivation of bacteria, and the formation of butyric acid, which is also a local and general irritant. The oil in nuts or olives is preferable to butter or any other animal fat, since it is free from bacteria, and does not ferment so readily. {May 30, 1909 WASe, GCB 217.20}

Eggs, Cream, Milk

Let the diet reform be progressive. Let the people be taught how to prepare food without the use of milk or butter. Tell them that the time will soon come when there will be no safety in using eggs, milk, cream, or butter, because disease in animals is increasing in proportion to the increase of wickedness among men.
