The Alpha and Omega of Apostasy

By Peter Lausevic

When you think of the word omega you think of the Greek word for end.

2 Kings 17:12 For they served idols, whereof the LORD had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing. 13 Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, [and by] all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments [and] my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.

Israel was the northern kingdom and Judah was the southern kingdom. Both these kingdoms were having a problem with apostasy. How did God testify to them; by all the prophets? God spoke to them by prophets as He wanted to save them.

2 Kings 17:14 Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God. 15 And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that [were] round about them, [concerning] whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them. 16 And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, [even] two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. 17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

They hardened their hearts and they rejected the statutes and the covenant He made with the fathers. They paid attention to the heathens around them and so God sent them a prophet. You’d think these people would have more sense and understand. God wants them to worship Him and they wanted to worship created things. They caused their children to pass through fire. You are teaching these people that there is a better way and they take their children and put them in the fire. To what extent do we want to be like the nations around us? We look to the people around us and soon they become like the people in the church.

The New Testament Church

The New Testament church had the Spirit of Prophecy and the Bible in the letters of Paul.

Colossians 4:16 And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the [epistle] from Laodicea. 17 And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it. 18 The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace [be] with you. Amen.

Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

Time past is no longer now some say. Who is apostle Paul? If before Christ He spake by prophets, then what would Paul have to do after he wrote this verse? Put his pen down and say no more prophets? Why did Paul continue after verse 1? He was the prophet. What did he do? He continued writing it.

Hebrews 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by [his] Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Who put prophets back in the church? God.

1 Corinthians 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

God restabilised prophets in New Testament times. Prophets must be re-established in the church after 1798. There is a time when we won’t need prophecy anymore. What is going to be done away? Prophecy.

1 Corinthians 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another [divers] kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. 12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also [is] Christ.

When we have Jesus we don’t need prophets anymore. Faith is not necessary when Jesus comes. You won’t need evidence anymore. You don’t need the prophets.

1 Corinthians 14:1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual [gifts], but rather that ye may prophesy. 2 For he that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth [him]; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men [to] edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

Until Jesus comes we need the gift of prophecy and because we need it, what should we be doing?

1 Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit. 20 Despise not prophesyings. 21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

As there are prophets we should be testing all things and the prophets. How do we identify the false from the true?

Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither [can] a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

What are the fruits of the prophets? The final test in Adventism will be our relation to the Spirit of Prophecy. In order to have a good relationship we need to read the writings of all the prophets. We are to read Moses the first prophet that wrote things for us to read. Moses, Joshua, Samuel, the Psalms, Solomon and Isaiah all these prophets were to be reading on a regular basis. Among them is the prophet gave to us since 1844. Why is it important to read what he prophets wrote? What will happen to us as individuals when we begin to study the prophets?

Joel 2:28 And it shall come to pass afterward, [that] I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

Some, I was shown, could receive the published visions, judging of the tree by its fruits. Others are like doubting Thomas; they cannot believe the published Testimonies, nor receive evidence through the testimony of others; but must see and have the evidence for themselves. Such must not be set aside, but long patience and brotherly love should be exercised toward them until they find their position and become established for or against. If they fight against the visions, of which they have no knowledge; if they carry their opposition so far as to oppose that in which they have had no experience, and feel annoyed when those who believe that the visions are of God speak of them in meeting, and comfort themselves with the instruction given through vision, the church may know that they are not right. God’s people should not cringe and yield, and give up their liberty to such disaffected ones. God has placed the gifts in the church that the church may be benefited by them; and when professed believers in the truth oppose these gifts, and fight against the visions, souls are in danger through their influence, and it is time then to labor with them, that the weak may not be led astray by their influence. {1T 328.1}

The Spirit of Prophecy belongs in the church. The testimonies were given to the church and we have right to read them there. When doing evangelistic meetings, you need to change them a little bit but try explaining Jesus is the Messiah without the book of Matthew. If you go to the Jews and try and explain Jesus is the Messiah, after you prove it from the old, show the fulfilment from the new.

Afterward

What does this word afterward mean?

Acts 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

It’s talking about the last days.

Acts 2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

The context of this passage when it says the last days, although it can be applied to the time of the apostles, the specific meaning is after May 19th 1780. The context of these last days, although partially fulfilled in the time of the apostles, has a direct fulfilment as we approach the close of time.

Acts 2:19 And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: 21 And it shall come to pass, [that] whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Joel 2:30 And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

This would have specific significance after May 19, 1780.

What we read in Joel 2 is that God has an intention of preparing his church for the final events of this earth’s history. As God is preparing them, God is going to give his church the special gifts of the Holy Spirit. What is needed to prepare us for these final events?

Joel 2:28 And it shall come to pass afterward, [that] I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

The Holy Spirit is going to be poured out upon his people. Among them will be the gifts of the prophets. Of all the people in this world, there is a specific group of people that is going to respond.

Joel 2:31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. 32 And it shall come to pass, [that] whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

Who is going to respond? The remnant who the Lord shall call. They are going to respond. A parallel prophecy is found.

Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Who is the remnant? Everyone wants to be the remnant; people calling themselves all sorts of things. Could you imagine a name as so wonderful Church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints? That is an awesome name. So here it does not just say remnant but what else?

Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

The remnant are those who have the testimony of Jesus. The remnant doesn’t mean someone having the Spirit of Prophecy on their shelf.

Anyone can print a bible. It does not make him the remnant. The remnant is described as a character. A people who respond to the writings of the spirit of prophecy. It is Jesus speaking through the prophets. What characteristic will this remnant have?

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

What character must we possess to see the second coming of Jesus Christ? We must have the character of Jesus. This is not some Laodicean Christian patting ourselves on the back because we make it to 11am service. And we think we’re comfortable. When I look at the testimony times, we don’t have much to testify of. Why? We are living the same day as the day before. The work of the prophet is designed to prepare a people for the second coming of Christ. I want to ask you a personal question. Do you want to be ready for the second coming? Are you determined to be ready when Jesus comes again?

How is the Spirit of Prophecy going to help us to be ready?

I have evaluated her writings and she fits the category of a prophetess. If in your search you find she does not qualify in your area, what are you to do with a false prophet? Stone them. We don’t stone them. You avoid them. You can’t say some of it is good or bad. James says you can’t have bitter water and clear water out of the same fountain. God does nothing in partnership with Satan. There is no negotiation. There is no treaty. It is either of God or not. Either accept the whole thing especially when it cuts against my grain. When he shall appear we shall be like him.

You want to be like Jesus? To what extent are we to be like Jesus? God cannot be serious to accept perfection from me as an individual. What is prophesied?

Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

When Jesus comes again the second time, what is he going to have? A glorious church. Not just individuals but a church. Not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing. When Jesus comes again the second time, what kind of church is He going to find? Without spot or blemish and holy. How many members in a church does it take to make a church unholy? Based on this prophecy how many church members are going to be unholy? God is going to have a holy church without spot or wrinkle. That means that if you and I want to be part of this church, what has to happen? To be part of this church, we must achieve perfection. God will bring us together. Our concern needs to be to reach this state. What do I need to do to become absolutely perfect?

Becoming like Jesus. Jesus is perfect. We need to be like Jesus. The goal of our church is to be perfect. If the state of our church is not to be perfect, will we get there? If a church says, this is not my goal, if we decide that your goal is less than perfection, will you ever achieve perfection? Never.

In school many people say, I’ll be happy with 60%. Those people with that goal rarely achieve it. We need to want 100%. With that dissatisfaction comes the 100%. If our personal goal is less than becoming like Jesus, perfection, we will never be ready for the second coming of Christ.

What happens as we study the meaning of the law of God as revealed through the writings of the prophets?

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17.

If we reject the testimony of Jesus, none of this can happen.

Amen.
