04 Jacob’s Trouble

The Gospel in Genesis, Audio: mp3

Jesus is coming. The interesting thing about Jesus coming is that it will be the happiest day for some people and the worst day for others. Which would you like it to be? We want it to be the happiest. It doesn’t come by chance, it doesn’t just happen. There is a cause to every affect and if we desire for it to be a happy day, then we need to bring into consideration and into our minds eye, the requirement or the pre-requisites that are needed in order to make it a happy day. The time of Jacobs’s trouble is the test. A judgement in itself to judge what things are made from. As we go through the investigative judgement and the opening of the sins of Gods people beforehand, this is for the purpose that we would make sure that the material that is used to build our characters is able to withstand fervent heat. It has to be precious metal employed into the building of one’s character.

Overview of Previous Studies

We want to consider how many people are likely to have a good foundation. We want to look at what is Jacobs’s trouble in relation to ourselves. Our personal spiritual walk. This study is to be applied to your person, not to the guy up the road but to you and me. We want to consider how will we know whether we will make it through or not. Our summary was about safe inside. In order to travel to this time of trouble since there never was, we have to be safe inside, just like Noah had to be safe inside.

Isaiah 26:20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. 21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

All this terrible experience so the call is come in and shut thy door. The Bible says a man is made a hiding place and that man is Christ Jesus. To be in Christ, this is equated with the seal upon the forehead, the Father’s name written on the forehead, the 144,000 to occupy the new earth along with the great multitude that was saved. These people came off victorious and they had this mark or seal in their forehead. We considered the Fathers name which is I AM WHAT I AM. In order to know His name or have His name in our mind, we don’t just think of a name you pronounce like a Jewish or Greek name, it is actually having who He is because His name is He is who He is.

This is His name unto all generations including the last one and His memorial (see Genesis 3:15). The name and the memorial are connected. The Sabbath will tell us if we will be true Sabbath keepers we will dwell on who God is. When we realise who He is, we realise who we are not. When we realise He is the creator, He is the sustainer, He is my redeemer then I realise that I am not my creator, I am not my sustainer and I am not my redeemer. When this not just theory but reality comes upon us, we will have peace because I am not the person to sustain my life, God is. This peace has an effect. The work of righteousness was peace and the effect of righteousness was quietness and assurance forever (see Isaiah 32:17-19).

To dwell on a little baby, the baby knows that the baby is not its own sustainer. It knows that the mum is the sustainer. The interesting thing about a child when you pick up a child and you hold it out with very little underneath, it doesn’t seem to worry. You could put it over some water or over a cliff and the baby has no idea. It is peaceful because it knows it can’t do anything it is just trusting in something outside of itself a father or a mother. When we come to this position and look at creation, it tells us that we are actually dust and compared to God we are really nothing. This Sabbath keeping is to lead us to become like little children. Sabbath keeping is to lead us to become born again.

As we become like little children we will rest in the knowledge of who God is. This is the effect of righteousness. We are all striving for righteousness are we not? Is peace and quietness increasing in your life or not? Are you gaining more and more internal peace? I’m not talking about circumstantial peace, but internal peace. The knowledge of the love of God. Is that increasing? Because if it that is increasing, that is a sign that the thing that causes that is increasing. If I am trying in this path of righteousness and I become more stressed, paranoid and pernickety, then perhaps I’m on the wrong path. I need to gain peace. The whole gospel is all about peace.

Are you in Christ? Not if you do not acknowledge yourselves erring, helpless, condemned sinners. Not if you are exalting and glorifying self. If there is any good in you, it is wholly attributable to the mercy of a compassionate Saviour. {5T 48.3}

If there is any talent that you have? Can you be happy in yourself about it? We are happy in God, we acknowledge, we see God instead of myself. If there is anything that seems good, everything goes to God. That is really understood when we see creation because man had no involvement in creation. He didn’t any suggestions, he didn’t add any good bits in there, God made it all and then He made man to observe it. Are you in Christ? What does it mean to be in Christ? A good friend of mine said, what does it mean to be in debt? What happens when you are in debt, does it stress you out if you have huge amounts of debt?

Debt is an interesting thing. When we are in debt it almost consumes us. What does it mean in sin? What does it mean to be in adultery? These things consume us. These are the actions in which we involve ourselves with. When it says we are to be in Christ that means He consumes me. He is to be everything to me. He is to be my occupation, everything to me. The Apostle Paul put it quite nicely when he says that he wishes to found in Him not having my own righteousness. Then he says in another place in Philippians for me to live is Christ. That is what it means to be in Christ. All about Christ and not about me. He must increase and I must decrease.

The Bible is to be the rule of life. It is marvelous in the eyes of the universe of heaven that men who teach the Word do not always practice the truth. {UL 89.6}

The word marvellous doesn’t mean it’s good it’s just an astonishment. They marvel at the fact that we can preach the truth and not do it. They scratch their heads and they don’t get that. That is odd.

Few realize what it means to be complete in Christ Jesus, the revealed will of God. {UL 89.6}

How many? Few. I want you to bookmark that word in your mind. Few. How many? Few. When we look at Noah’s ark we read in 1 Peter;

1 Peter 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

How many? Eight which is few. Some calculations were done some time ago what the population could have been before the flood. Would have then been more then or today? Probably more then. If you consider the lifespan and how many children they had or the growth and the calculations of what it would be, there would have been more than today perhaps not but an enormous amount of people on the planet. When it says there were few, that is eight were saved. That can be a little discouraging that in the whole world there were only eight.

Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Why?

Matthew 7:14 Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Why are there a few people that will find this gate? Because it is a strait gate. It is a difficult gate. Question, is it easy to be really humble as in true humility? Is it never ever to be offended? This is why so few because we hang onto self. Everything we do revolves around self and because of that, this difficult gate, people say no, let’s go the other way and few actually even find it.

Luke 13:23 Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, 24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

We have a very slimming down of the amount of people that get into this gate. When we talk about Noah’s ark, this door people didn’t want to go into because this is the same gate, the same righteousness to be involved to be able to get in. If so few will be saved, how do I know that I will be among the right company? When we are talking about Jacobs’s trouble when probation closes when the door is shut, how do I know if I am in the right spot? How will I know? Some may say I will know as I will be righteous because I won’t be sinning anymore so I will know. As we go through our study we will realise this idea is not trustworthy. In fact if that is the mentality, chances are you are not righteous. Some may say I will know when probation closes if I am the Lords or not as I will be able to go through Jacobs’s trouble just knowing for the fact that I’m being persecuted. Just because you go through persecution, does that mean you will be saved?

The Bible tells us that there are people who are persecuted purely because they are busy bodies and annoying. If we are persecuted purely because we are annoying in the way of just being annoying to people, then that doesn’t mean we will be saved just because we have persecution. Persecution is not a good indication whether you are in the right camp or not. Some may say I go to church on Sabbath therefore I will be on the right side because I do this. Or I know will be on the right track because I would have lost everything. Or I know how I will know, because I will be in the rocks in the mountains and the caves. The Bible says the rich men their gold will be thrown to the bats and the moles and they will crawl into the rocks and caves. Just because we are in the caves does it mean we are righteousness because the wicked also will want to hop in a cave.

How Will I Know?

Matthew 13:25 When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: 26 Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.

We could say I will know when I’m in the camp as I’ll know who God is. Because I will know God as I would have eaten and drunken with Him. I will know His name because I can verbalise it. Does that mean I am in the right camp?

Matthew 13:27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.

What is the class that is left out? Workers of iniquity. If we are workers of the iniquity, we will be in the wrong camp. Do people who work iniquity believe their work was of iniquity? They wouldn’t be so surprised if they really knew themselves that they have been deceived. They are surprised in the fact they are left out and he says you are workers of iniquity. It is hard for the human mind to know how sinful they are. One of the most difficult things for the human brain to do is to understand itself truly as God sees it.

Matthew 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;

What is iniquity coupled with? Those that offend. Do you ever get offended? Do you ever go through an experience where you do something for someone else in the church and people come and say, I don’t like it. What happens in side of you? You get sick. You feel like crawling in a cave and never talking to anyone again and you are cut to the quick. Or if someone points out a sin and says this sin is an issue and you get really offended and say look at their life, how dare there. We go straight on the defence. In the church, do we get offended when someone does something and we can get offended at what they do? Offense is connected with iniquity. To gage if I have iniquity is to gage how deeply I get offended.

Is it good to bring offerings to God and God reject it? What happened to Cain? He was really offended because offense is proof of self-existing. Things don’t hurt when you are dead. Pain is a testimony of your living experience. If you are alive you will get pain. My brother says when something hurts him – it lets me know I’m alive. If we are dead in Christ would we get offended? We think we shouldn’t be offended but somehow we still get offended.

Psalm 119:165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

How much? Nothing will offend. This condition is a result of loving Gods law. The centre of the law is the Sabbath as Sabbath keeping is so important for your salvation. I don’t think we fully comprehend it, it is huge. How we keep the sabbath in relation to understanding God and how humble I need to be. If we love God’s law we will be in a state of peace and nothing will offend us. When the master of the house has risen from the house and shut the door, he says depart from me ye that work iniquity as God wants to take out of his kingdom all things that offend and do iniquity. If we continue in being offended, we will come unstuck in Jacobs’s trouble. We need to have a faith and connection with God that will be everything to us. The only day we can be offended is the day God dies who does so we would never be offended as he is everything to us. .

Jacobs Trouble

We want to consider a little bit about Jacobs trouble. Jacob deceives his brother and does wrong things in his younger days. His name means deceiver, he is a supplanter and he is untruthful. He does some sins against Esau and deals treacherously and he has to flee. Years go by and you’d think time gets rid of sins it doesn’t. Only the blood of Christ gets rid of sins. After many, many years he learns that his brother is coming after him to kill him and all the past rushes back like a huge scene and he is stressed and now he has to go through a battle that will make him something else.

Satan had accused Jacob before the angels of God, claiming the right to destroy him because of his sin; he had moved upon Esau to march against him; and during the patriarch’s long night of wrestling, Satan endeavored to force upon him a sense of his guilt in order to discourage him and break his hold upon God. Jacob was driven almost to despair; but he knew that without help from heaven he must perish. He had sincerely repented of his great sin, and he appealed to the mercy of God. He would not be turned from his purpose, but held fast the Angel and urged his petition with earnest, agonizing cries until he prevailed. {GC 618.1}

Satan starts to do something. He gets a bit of permission to take over Jacobs mind in the fact of tormenting and challenging him.

As Satan influenced Esau to march against Jacob, so he will stir up the wicked to destroy God’s people in the time of trouble. And as he accused Jacob, he will urge his accusations against the people of God. He numbers the world as his subjects; but the little company who keep the commandments of God are resisting his supremacy. {GC 618.2}

Satan is on Jacobs track, his brother is on his track with a whole host of people as well. This is a satiation of the world is against me, my family is against me and the devil is against me. When people are against us we are tempted to get discouraged, offended and upset and we want to say forget it all. This little company, a few people that Satan can’t get hold of but the Lord is letting Satan test them.

If he could blot them from the earth, his triumph would be complete. He sees that holy angels are guarding them, and he infers that their sins have been pardoned; but he does not know that their cases have been decided in the sanctuary above. He has an accurate knowledge of the sins which he has tempted them to commit, {GC 618.2}

I wish we were as vigilant as the devil in doing the right thing. The devil is so vigilant in fact he is on time to meetings. He is here before God is here and he understands every person’s weak spot. He knows your character, what he has caused you to do in the past, he knows your history. He knows which buttons to press. The people that can annoy and distress the most are our siblings as they know the past. The more someone knows about you, the more they can annoy you. Isn’t that true?

He has an accurate knowledge of the sins which he has tempted them to commit, and he presents these before God in the most exaggerated light, representing this people to be just as deserving as himself of exclusion from the favor of God. He declares that the Lord cannot in justice forgive their sins and yet destroy him and his angels. He claims them as his prey and demands that they be given into his hands to destroy. {GC 618.2}

As Satan accuses the people of God on account of their sins, the Lord permits him to try them to the uttermost. {GC 618.3}

Job

Job was a righteous man. Satan comes to this meeting where God and the sons of God have come and Jesus says to Satan, what are you doing? He says I’ve been walking up and down the earth, it’s my place. Jesus says have you considered Job? Satan says he only likes you because you bless him. You’ve surrounded him with so many blessings. That’s the only reason why he likes you. If you took them away, he’d curse you to your face. The Lord says I don’t agree with you, he genuinely likes me. Satan says let me have some control of his life and he will curse you to his face. God says okay, don’t touch his body but have a shot.

That day how many things happened to job? His donkeys, cattle, camel and children are gone and just a mess. Did he charge God? He didn’t. Satan comes back to God and God says see, he is faithful but you let me touch his body, his health. The most valuable thing we own is health. It’s such a blessing to be healthy. Satan says let me touch his body and he will definitely. God says okay have a shot. Satan comes and gives him boils, he can’t take his life though, and he can’t kill him. Job is in agony, Satan sends some friends to really annoy and try him to challenge his thinking. Everything is a disaster, his wife is offended and says curse God and die. Job answers remarkably. Shouldn’t we receive blessing and evil from God? Should we only love God because he is good to us? What if he is bad to us, shouldn’t we love him anyway? This it he mentality of job, this kept him going. He knew God and this is exactly what will happen to you and me. This is what happen to Jacob, God says okay have a shot at him, and we will see what he is made from. We will test the character. The Lord permits Satan to try them to the uttermost.

Their confidence in God, their faith and firmness, will be severely tested. As they review the past, their hopes sink; for in their whole lives they can see little good. {GC 618.3}

Firstly people are against you. You are not a popular person. Your mind is suggesting that you have all these problems. As far as your memory serves you, you did them. Then, when they look at their life they see very little good. Do you think they will think they are righteous? Do you think they have something wherewith to trust? None at all.

They are fully conscious of their weakness and unworthiness. {GC 618.3}

When we feel unworthy, the thought is that I can’t even talk to God, he is not even going to listen to me because I’m not worthy. Often when we feel unworthy we cease from praying. These are the thoughts and feelings that will come, unworthiness.

Though God’s people will be surrounded by enemies who are bent upon their destruction, yet the anguish which they suffer is not a dread of persecution for the truth’s sake; they fear that every sin has not been repented of, and that through some fault in themselves they will fail to realize the fulfillment of the Saviour’s promise: I “will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world.” {GC 619.1}

Jacob’s experience during that night of wrestling and anguish represents the trial through which the people of God must pass just before Christ’s second coming. {PP 201.1}

Satan had accused Jacob before the angels of God, claiming the right to destroy him because of his sin; he had moved upon Esau to march against him; and during the patriarch’s long night of wrestling, Satan endeavored to force upon him a sense of his guilt, in order to discourage him, and break his hold upon God. When in his distress Jacob laid hold of the Angel, and made supplication with tears, the heavenly Messenger, in order to try his faith, also reminded him of his sin, and endeavored to escape from him. {PP 201.3}

How would you feel is your friends and relatives and former brethren are your bitterest enemies, the whole world hates you, you hate yourself, the devil hates you and it appears this heavenly messenger also reminds you of your sin you had committed before and then tries to go. How would you feel if Jesus says I don’t want to be with you? How would you feel then? If that is what your senses are communicating. What’s left? This is what Jacob wrestled with.

But Jacob would not be turned away. He had learned that God is merciful, {PP 201.3}

This is something he had already done before coming into Jacobs’s trouble. Before probation closed, he had already learnt of Gods great mercy, have you? Have I? if we haven’t we will not get through.

Such will be the experience of God’s people in their final struggle with the powers of evil. God will test their faith, their perseverance, their confidence in His power to deliver them. {PP 202.1}

God is going to test and see how much weight you are placing upon Him. That is determined by how much weight you place on other things so if he takes it all away, and you fall over, what were you resting on? Not him. Then to test if you are relying on your sense and not feelings or faith, he will take away the sense of his presence to see what you are sitting on so that the only thing left is raw faith in knowledge of God before you come into the situation. That is the only thing that is going to be left. If we fall as anything comes out, it is proof that we have been leaning on that. As we come to this situation, what am I relying to keep me satisfied? Am I relying on circumstances to see me happy?

I would be so much happier if I was in such and such a place or if this happened to me or if some people went away, if something changed I would then be happy. That is a warning that we are in trouble. We need to understand who God is really. In his power, – isn’t that the gospel, the power of God. How much you know of the gospel not your ability to verbalise it but your action on living the gospel.

The season of distress and anguish before us will require a faith that can endure weariness, delay, and hunger. {GC 621.2}

Are we only happy because we get such lovely food at camp? Is that the thing that makes us happy? What if we had no food? Would we be happy or narky at each other and offended? What is the support of our life? Is it the life we have so in abundance that we have plenty of meals in a day but are we resting on that?

…a faith that will not faint though severely tried. The period of probation is granted to all to prepare for that time. {GC 621.2}

You think you do well in tests if you never prepare? Do we think we are going to do well if we don’t come away with resolution and decision to start preparing in a more earnest way than we have before. The area in which this prep is done is involved in being offended. This is something to mark, how often I get offended, how deeply I get offended, if someone says something to me that is cutting. We have no right to offend people. Let’s not test our brethren by offending them.

Matthew 18:7 Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and [that] he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

While ever the area in which our test is if I get offended, let us not offend people. Leave that to the Lord. The Lord will allow people to get closely tested to have the word of God come very close to ego and hit right into it to see if it is still alive. If it is alive it will scream but if it is dead it won’t do anything. This is the area, being offended. Mark this in church trials and business meetings. Don’t worry about the other person we have work to do as I’m offended at that. If we would do this we would realise how much work we have to do instead of having binoculars out to everyone else and forgetting the condition of my own life. Business meetings are very important as it is a good place to exercise preparation for Jacobs’s trouble. How many want to prepare for Jacobs trouble?

Go to business meetings and don’t get upset with other people or offended because the Bible says He is going to take out of his kingdom all that offend and do iniquity. When we run business meetings people say, oh, we have to have a business meeting. It drags on and the fastest motion is when to close and then someone’s hand is up. If we would realise the bus meeting is such a spiritual meeting. We are dealing with business but also our ability to relate with our brethren on earthly levels. We can all be cheery and sing our happy songs on the sabbath but when we come to the bus meeting then the rubber hits the road and we see what we are made from as everyone has to express their mind on business matters. What is the area again? Offended, that is the area of preparation.

Psalm 119:165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

That is the result of the gospel. That result can’t be manufactured as people can’t hide their offence to do that. They can hide it from everyone else but inside they know they are offended, it hurts them. This is the test by which we will know which side of the camp we are on. Whether we get offended or not and God will test it because will offend us. Are we going to get offended at God? Could job get offended at God? God was the one who let the barriers down. Satan did it, God didn’t do it. But God permitted it to be done and when someone is your protector and then allows some arrows to come through and hit you, will you get offended and say hey you are my protector, what are you doing? He says I’m testing you to see if you are going to be offended at me. As Christians we can’t expect our life to be smooth sailing. God is going to say alright Satan, I will let you have a shot of the brother over here. I will let you take his job away from him. Have a shot but don’t take his life. Satan says great I have permission from God to test you guys. The whole universe is watching, what are they going to do? are they going to offend God or not? Are they going to curse God to his face or not? What are they going to do? we need a faith that will not faint though severely tried.

The period of probation is granted to all to prepare for that time. Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and determined. His victory is an evidence of the power of importunate prayer. All who will lay hold of God’s promises, as he did, and be as earnest and persevering as he was, will succeed as he succeeded. {RC 371.5}

Jacob is proof you can win. Jacob is proof that we would could be lying deceiving people today to be able to withstand all the devices of the devil. We bookmarked a word when we started called few.

Few

Those who are unwilling to deny self, to agonize before God, to pray long and earnestly for His blessing, will not obtain it. {RC 371.5}

Wrestling with God–how few know what it is! {RC 371.6}

How many will be saved? Few.

How few have ever had their souls drawn out after God with intensity of desire until every power is on the stretch. When waves of despair which no language can express sweep over the suppliant, how few cling with unyielding faith to the promises of God. {GC 621.2}

Those who exercise but little faith now, are in the greatest danger of falling under the power of satanic delusions and the decree to compel the conscience. And even if they endure the test they will be plunged into deeper distress and anguish in the time of trouble, because they have never made it a habit to trust in God. The lessons of faith which they have neglected they will be forced to learn under a terrible pressure of discouragement. {GC 622.1}

We need to trust God. If God can feed the birds who He didn’t make in His image, He didn’t die for them, He is not going to resurrect them, how much will He care for me and you? So much stress belongs to us because of our daily surroundings. Because we fear that this or that won’t happen. How many fears, God hasn’t given us the spirit of fear. God didn’t give that. He gives love, power and a sound mind. How few? We are a few, what we need to do is to have a prayer life. Get to know God to the degree that God can offend us and we will still trust him.

The season of distress and anguish before us will require a faith that can endure weariness, delay, and hunger–a faith that will not faint though severely tried. The period of probation is granted to all to prepare for that time. {GC 621.2}

How do I get a strong faith? The disciples came to Jesus and they had an idea that they needed some of this faith so they came to Him and said increase our faith. Do you want to ask the Lord the same question? Is that our question, Lord increase our faith. Is that it?

Luke 17:5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.

17:6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

Did He answer their question? The disciples said Lord increase our faith and He said if you had a little bit of faith, you could do this amazing thing. Was that the answer to the question? It was not the answer. He was reiterating the importance of it but the answer is in the next verse;

Luke 17:7 But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?

17:8 And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink?

17:9 Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.

17:10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

He gives an illustration if you had an employee, if you were a boss and you hired a person for $20 an hour and you gave them work and a wage, after they have done their work, how many bosses will say you have just the most brilliant work, I want to cook a meal for you, give you a massage as you have just done your job. Do bosses do that? If you have just done the job, that’s all. You just give them their wage. If God says for us to do something and we do it, how many of us feel good about ourselves about it? I’m a real Christian now, I just did something good. After we have done good things, it is an unconscious growth, it is like a fungus that grows. This idea is that if I became a worker for the Lord, the Lord would love me. If I went to a place and preached and baptised souls God would just be really happy with me. Is that what the Lord says that is how we should think?
