How to Overcome Sin
Sometimes it is easy to forget the things we learn and read and when we get into a trial, sometimes the how to’s of overcoming disappears and all of a sudden we think oh what was I meant to do again? Or, how does this work? I want to refresh the things we have shared before that we never lose sight of how it is we can follow the Lord. We see our high calling in Hebrews.
Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all [men], and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
That is a task and a half considering our own natures and humanity. There is not much peace on this planet but the Bible says follow peace with all men. It is not a peace that is received by compromising the truth. We could say we will be at peace with everyone and who cares for God’s teachings and standards and let’s have a big group hug. This is not that kind of peace. It is saying follow peace with all men and holiness without which no man shall see the Lord.
No doubt we are all here because we want to see and worship the Lord and be prepared for His soon coming and so this text is a very high calling, to follow peace with all men and holiness. If we don’t have that, no one will see the Lord. There is another text speaking to the Laodicean people in Revelation 3:
Revelation 3: 18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich;
We naturally think we are rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing. The Lord is saying buy of me this gold that you will be rich.
Revelation 3:18 and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. 21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
These words are addressing the religious people in the time of Laodicea. They claim to have everything. Just because we are among that people and part of the Laodicean church period, does that mean we are saved; not at all? If we hear His voice and open our door and sup with Him and have a relationship with Jesus, does that mean we are saved automatically? The Bible says to him that overcomes. To what degree do we have to overcome? It says even as I also overcame. So the degree in which Jesus Christ our Lord overcame so you and I must overcome I order to receive the promise given in the Laodicean period.
I read these words and look at my life and its struggles and think how is it that I can maintain and continue this upward path? Sometimes we can go through a dark patch and feel we don’t know where we are going when it gets dark and all the features of the Christian life become blurry and we think are we actually going the right way. We need to question ourselves to whether we are actually following the LORD or not. Have I really given everything to the Lord? How can we be ready for his coming? This is the big desire of our lives; to be ready for Jesus to come.
I want to refresh our memory on how it is that we can overcome. It is not too complicated. It is very simple. There is not one person who cannot relate to these verses. Romans chapter 5 talks about how by one-man sin entered. Death entered by sin and death reigned. Where ever sin reigns, death reigns because they are part and parcel of the same package. Sin equals death and when sin is the ruling power then death is the ruling power and the grave is the result even the second death. The scripture is giving hope through the gift of God.
Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
This text is simply saying don’t sin. Okay, right! Just don’t sin. Is it just as easy as that just don’t sin and we say Okay Lord, never again?
Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members [as] instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members [as] instruments of righteousness unto God.
Verse 14 holds a promise.
Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
If we want to understand who is reigning we need to observe what we are doing. If we are actively sinning then we could conclude according to the scriptures that sin is reigning over us. The statement says should we then sin because we are under grace and not under the law. This concept of not being under the law so we can sin is just a misuse of terms because sin is being under the law. If we say we are not under the law therefore we can sin, we are saying we are not under the law so therefore we can be under the law. It does not make sense so the scriptures are very clear that if we are actively sinning then sin is reigning in our lives and if sin is reigning what else is reining; death? Who would like to die? Do we look forward to dying? Naturally inside of man there is a desire to survive and to fight death. But we are fighting a loosing battle without the Lord. In verse 19 Apostle Paul explains that humanity has an infirmity when it comes to overcoming sin and we often miss the point. In verse 19 he makes it simple by using an analogy.
Romans 6:19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
The Apostle says if we want to understand how it is that we can be victorious then work out how it is that we sin and by this method ‘as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.’
He makes a comparison that the way we sin is the way in which we overcome. If sin is stronger than righteousness, we are saying the devil is stronger than Christ but who is stronger? Christ is stronger. We need to understand the method in which we sin and if we employ that exact method to righteousness we will overcome every sin because the Lord is stronger than the devil. Do I have to explain how it is we sin? I know we all know how to sin. If we don’t, then this sermon is irrelevant but if we all know how to sin we can understand how it is we can be victorious. So how is it that we sin? Genesis will tell us how we sinned and some good lessons on psychology too.
Genesis 3: Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which [is] in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree [was] good for food, and that it [was] pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make [one] wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they [were] naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
This situation started off considerably innocent, just a bit of a curiosity. She wanted to look at the tree. Her curiosity was an avenue in which the mind was open to start picking up information carefully and as this curiosity came and the serpent caused Eve to question. Her curiosity led to questioning. As this questioning arose and she listened more and allowed the voice to enter into her ears, she didn’t stop it and run off. Had she run off she would have never sinned but she allowed herself to listen. The Bible says, “and when the woman ‘saw’.” As she was listening she ‘saw’ the tree was good for food but was it good for food?
The Bible says every good gift comes from the Father. He doesn’t withhold any good gifts therefore because this tree was withheld from them it was not a good gift for man at all. It was not for man and God said not to have it but as she listened her curiosity opened her mind and she started questioning, ‘has God really said?’ and as she allowed this voice to speak then her eyes changed and all of a sudden saw differently. This process of seeing it differently was the way in which she saw that it was good for food and able to make her wise. She seriously thought it was a benefit and something to be gained. As she saw it differently she made an action. Not totally convinced she took of it and ate. The Bible says the eyes of them both were opened. Suddenly something shifted in their minds and they saw things they never saw before and when they saw God they ran away. They suddenly saw Him as a tyrant thinking God is against them and trying to destroy their pleasure. Man runs off and hides and starts to make human inventions for his needs. He is naked now and starts to think, what can I do to help myself? This is sin.
Romans 6 says as you have your members to uncleanness and iniquity even so yield yourself servants to the Lord.
If we reverse the whole thing we will find the key to overcoming. First if we have a particular sin that we may not think is sin we must be curious enough to find out whether it really is or not. Many people do not know what sin is. They have not looked nor had the curiosity to go ask if what they are doing is wrong or not. No one searches and no one finds and therefore the sin remains. If Eve when she was good had not gone searching she would have never sinned. Now we as sinners if we never go searching we will never become righteous. We need to have enough curiosity to examine our actions by the leaves of the Bible and investigate whether what we’re doing is actually right or wrong and to question our habits according to the voice of God.
If we start hearing things opposite to what we’ve learned, e.g. God told Eve not to eat the fruit or she would die, but Eve had the ability to question God, so how about we question if society is wrong? Society teaches a lot of things that we accept as normal but we need to question if it is right or not. We need to go and ask the Lord and when He starts talking and contradicts what we have learned what will we do? Will we run away? How many people run away when God starts contradicting our life style? We want to forget and run away. If Eve did that it would have been good. If we want to become righteous and partake of the tree of life, we need to allow God’s words to come in and start to undo that which the serpent had done in the beginning.
I need to be able to study and look at the habits of my life and as I start investigating by myself (if there are lots of people around you expressing their thoughts you will not be able to do it.) If Adam were there she would not have sinned. If you want to be righteous it is your decision. Don’t ask people to come and be righteous with you. You go to the Lord and let him affect your mind to the way it should have been. As we look at the Word and it contradicts society, whom will we believe God or society? We will believe the Lord if we want to be righteous. We will believe every word that proceeds from His mouth for his words are true.
Give God Time
If we will stay long enough, if we will listen to God’s word long enough we will start to see things a little differently. We need to give it time; time is an essential part of being righteous. We cannot be righteous unless we give God time. We have to lend him our ears for a good amount of time regularly so he can start telling us what he has to say about our life styles. We open our minds to it with curiosity saying I’m interested to hear what the Lord has to say. If we give it time we will start to look at things differently. As we start to look at things differently we will begin to see wisdom in the Lord’s way and we will see there is something to be benefited by it. God will not wreck our fun. There is real benefit in God’s ways then we will take and eat that which He has said and when we have done that our eyes will be open to see that He was right. That could sound like the Lord is deceiving us but who is right the devil or the Lord; make your decision. Who is the deceiver? We are all deceived so to follow the Lord is to come out of deception but we have to lend him our ears with open hearts for a good amount of time to let His suggestions or His truth change the way we view things. The Bible tells us in John 7:
John 7:17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or [whether] I speak of myself.
A Limit to Theory
What is this saying? God put out what He has to say and the devil put out what he has to say. Eve followed Satan and her eyes were opened and she said, oh is that what it is all about. It was knowledge in the action. We can only go so far in the Christian walk with theory if we don’t put it into practice we will go no further and so it is with the Lord. We can listen and say Lord tell me what you have to say through the prophets, Bible and testimonies and after a time we will see what He is saying. If we don’t do anything about it, that will be as far as it will go and we will return back to our typical life but if anyone does His will then they will know of the doctrine whether it is of God or a human doctrine. What do we need to do if the Lord tells us something? We need to actually go and do it. Some people want to be convinced 110% before they do anything but no one will be convinced 110% until they have done it as then they will know. The belief that being convicted inside and motivated by your own thoughts is genuine Christianity, is not right. God says it go and do it and you will see it clearer and then your eyes will be open. That is what the Bible says; the way you have sinned is the same method you use to overcome.
Isaiah 56:1 Thus saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation [is] near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed.
This text is saying if something is right just do it and then the righteousness will come. Some think that is pharisaical works. Well if God’s righteousness never comes into the equation yes it is, but you will never get to God’s righteousness unless you start doing it. We actually need to put our feet in the water before we are even 100% convinced. If it is written and God has said it and we can read it and we give our ear to it long enough and say I will do it then His salvation and righteousness will come and we will know of the doctrine and say yes this is true I know it not by theory but by experience not university studies. That has far more weight in missionary work.
When we think about our habits some of them are quite disgusting for example, smoking cigarettes. When you first inhale smoke you find it unpleasant. How do people do things that are not pleasant? They do it by association? The marketing industry understands this principle. They associate a smile with a cigarette as if the cigarette produces the smile but it doesn’t, it only produces lung cancer. Another way is peer pressure. No one can get addicted to something unless they start doing it. You will never change your habits unless you start new habits. Before it becomes a habit it is hard but eventually it gets easier. It is hard work starting to smoke then it becomes hard to stop. As you have yielded your members to unrighteousness so we do it the other way to righteousness.
Who is the Majority?
If we want to go with the majority and be on the popular side, we can count all the angels and all the heavenly intelligences and then we would obey the Bible. There is only a minority called earth that disobey. We live among the minority but we are a minority of the minority and therefore we think the inhabitants of earth is the majority and feel pressured into living our life in a certain life style to fit into this world but if we want to break the habit we must look at the cloud of witnesses, the Bible and all the heavenly intelligences that obey God. If we do this and start to pursue God’s way the first steps will feel hard and strange. Just like the first steps of smoking a cigarette but keep going in righteousness. If we want to follow the Lord we have to give up set opinions and we read it John 8.
Disciples in action
John 8:31 If ye continue in my word, [then] are ye my disciples indeed;
How? Indeed. What does indeed mean? It means in action. A deed is what we do and we will be disciples in our actions if we continue in his word. We have to lend our ears to the Lord long enough for Him to convince us and once he has convinced us there is benefit in doing his word we have to go against our natural tendencies or the way society is built and as hard as it may be we must continue in it and be His disciple in action. If we don’t do those things then we are not His disciples.
Isaiah 55: 6 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
In this method of following the Lord and overcoming transgression we must seek Him while He is near because there is a time coming when He won’t listen. Probation will close and he that is filthy will remain filthy and he that is unjust and unholy will remain unjust and unholy so seek the Lord while he may be found. Let us give him our ears while he is around.
Isaiah 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
God is calling upon me to forsake my thoughts. The particular way I think has to be forsaken. How can I forsake my thoughts? How did Eve forsake her God given thoughts? She allowed Satan’s thoughts to come into her ear and she made them her own. Then her original thoughts were out the door because the mind is constituted so that we cannot dwell on good and evil at the same time. We cannot hold two elements or serve two masters one has to go. When it says let the wicked or unrighteous man forsake his thoughts, how do we do that?
Isaiah 55:7 …and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
55:8 For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
So we say okay I have to give up my thoughts and God is saying my thoughts and your thoughts are two different things. Don’t try and put God into your thoughts. Get your thoughts out of the equation and get His thoughts in. Someone will say, how do we get God’s thoughts? How do you get anyone’s thoughts? How did Eve get the devils thoughts? She got them by listening. He that has an ear let him hear. God didn’t give us ears for nothing. He gave them so we can be saved. God’s thoughts and His words and His mind have been delivered to us for the sole purpose of being put into our minds. When it enters our minds something has to go. But when someone’s thoughts cross my thoughts, I don’t really appreciate it. Have you ever experienced that? When someone thinks differently we start to ridicule him or her and say what a waste of time that person is. How many Christians do that with the Lord? We say we love the Lord as long as we don’t get His thoughts on different matters. Does God have particular views on certain things? Yes He does. We have particular views on things but are they the same? Let us just look at one example.
The Apron or the Coat?
Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they [were] naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
When man sinned they saw they were naked. Man was originally clothed with a garment of light according to Psalms. When man sinned they realized they were naked. What did man do when he found he was naked? He sewed fig leaves. How did man arrange this garment upon himself? He made an apron. What is an apron like? It has no sleeves and at the longest it goes to the knees with an open back. Whose mind designed that? It was man’s idea of clothing, no sleeves, just to the knees with an open back. We just read let the wicked forsake his way for my thoughts are not your thoughts they are higher than your thoughts. What are God’s thoughts on being clothed?
Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
Now we have a coat right down to the feet not like the caveman pictures you see. He clothed them with coats. Do coats have sleeves? Yes they do, that was God’s idea. His idea was for man to be covered up and man’s idea is not to be covered up. How do I overcome that idea and follow the Lord in the way He wants me to be dressed? Does He have a preference in what I wear? Of course He does. He put the coat on Adam and Eve and if the fig leaves were good enough they could have stayed there. Why invent something twice if it good? God had a better idea that the nakedness would be covered up as in Revelation 3:15 it says;
Revelation 3:15 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness do not appear…
As In The Spiritual So In The Physical
But people say the Lord isn’t taking about our physical dress, He is talking about our spiritual dress. Which is easier? To clothe your body or cloth your spirit? If we cannot be faithful in that which is least, can we be faithful in that which is much; not at all? When we take the Lord’s ordinances we say we must never use leavened bread, it must be unleavened bread. Is there anything wrong with leaven in bread in the physical? The physical shows us a picture for the spiritual. We take due diligence in making sure the bread for the Lord’s supper has no leaven because it is symbolic. Is the way we dress symbolic? It is God’s idea that our dress and hearts would image the outward would be an index to the inward. That is what God intended. When man sinned he put on some scant clothes but when God came and He clothed them properly.
The Bible said let the unrighteous man forsake his thoughts therefore we must replace our thoughts with the thoughts of God. If we don’t like the thoughts of God, then we need to listen to them long enough and see their benefit and be convinced by reading His word through the prophets and the testimonies and as we read, we will start to realize there is something to be gained and benefited.
As we allow our minds to be open to the Lord’s suggestions, then we start to look and see that our society is pretty crooked. As we grew up in it we thought it was okay with no problems. But now there is a problem. If we listen to the Lord instead of running away saying, I don’t want that way of dress, we will never overcome on any other level but not because of dress is the thing that makes you overcome, but it’s the principle on applying this example of dress on every other level. Such as our eating, deportment, amusement or what ever we do we must say the Lord’s idea is far better than mine and I need to listen and let Him convince me that His mind is better than my mind and give Him my time and then when we are convinced, we will put our actions to it and then we will see and say, ah the Lord is right I have tasted and seen. My eyes are now open to the truth.
John 7:17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or [whether] I speak of myself.
If you do his will then you will know of the doctrine. That is if you will put it into practice. Christianity today does not like those concepts but I pray that those of us will want to make the Lord’s ideas our ideas and for His ideas to become ours we must take His idea as something valuable and keep on it until they becomes our ideas. If we don’t want to do this but still want to remain a Christian, we are described as follows:
Seven Women and One Man
Isaiah 4:1 And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.
We will just say to the Lord, I just want to be a Christian and follow you but I want to keep my own ideas about things. We want to keep the way we see things and we become weathered to our opinion. We marry our opinion and so God’s view is this and my opinion is that, so who is going to win? Who is stronger? God is stronger than our opinions so if we don’t give our opinions up, what will happen to us? We will be destroyed. These are the hard facts of the matter. If we do not forsake our ways and thoughts and seek the Lord while He maybe found we would have great regrets afterward when we realize the end of transgression is not just the grave six-foot under, but it is eternal death with torture according to the deeds done in the body. Let our curiosity find out from God’s word and from the testimonies what God actually requires in our lives. If we let our curiosity follow that path we will find ourselves converted in no time. He is much more able to change the mind than Satan is. We just have to allow Him to do it. He can’t do it if we do not let him. If Eve didn’t let Satan do it, he could not have done it either. Let’s investigate all these subject even dress. I dare you to look and if you let the Lord’s ideas stay in your mind long enough, you will be a different person.
How Do We Cleanse Our Ways?
Psalms 119: 9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way?
How is a young person going to cleanse his ways?
Psalms 119:9 …by taking heed [thereto] according to thy word.
What does the word heed mean? It is not just to listen audibly, it is actually to bend the mind down to stop and open the mind to it. Heeding is opening the heart. How shall a young man cleanse his ways; by taking heed or opening the heart according to God’s word? When you think of His word you will think His thoughts and if you think His thoughts after him, then what sort of mind do you have? Do you have your own mind improved a little bit? You have his mind. It was already generated. You are not creating something new, you are taking Christ and implanting it. His mind was there before the foundation of the world. He wants us to think His thoughts after Him and copy Him because of His mind in us.
Psalms 119:9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed [thereto] according to thy word. 10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
How much does it require taking heed to the Lord? It takes our whole heart. If there is a idol in the heart and the Lord begins to strike at it? Am I going to cover it up and say hey, don’t hurt my idol or am I going to open it up to the full swing of the Lord’s sword so He can slice it into pieces? That hurts but it is needful.
Psalms 119:10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. 11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart,
… that I might not sin against thee.
If we listen to popular music and movies and we hide all their words in our hearts and memorize them all, we will be like them and do what they do and talk and act and dress like them but if we take the Lord’s words and hide them in our hearts then we will talk like Him and act and dress like Him. The method is the same. We only have to ask ourselves how we got addicted to something and then we will know how to get addicted to the Lord. Just follow the same principles and it will work every time.
Psalms 119:12 Blessed [art] thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. 13 With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.
Magnify the Lord
Here is another method of enlarging something. How do we make something big?
Psalms 34:3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.
How do we magnify something? You enlarge it to see more detail. How do you do that? Does anyone have trouble magnifying their problems? We don’t have trouble magnifying our problems but we have trouble magnifying the Lord. Why? Because we try different methods to magnify the Lord than we do our problems. We just need to use the same method. If we do the same thing we will get the same result.
How do we magnify our problems? We think dwell and talk about them, tell everyone about them, even gossip about them and talk and talk until they are the biggest things on the planet. So how do we magnify the Lord? Think about Him, talk about Him, tell everyone about Him and He will be the biggest thing in the world and is He? Of a truth He is. Is your problem really the biggest thing in the world? Not at all. So then which is a lie? We are so good at applying gospel principles to sin and we become very good sinners. Let us become very good disciples of Jesus by following him.
Psalms 119:13 With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.
When we speak, the words go out of our mouth and back into our ears and we hear what we have just said and it strengthens within us. The more we talk about something the stronger it gets. Many many marriages have been ruined because people have begun talking about jealousies. They sit down at the coffee club and start talking and then it goes back into their ears and they come away thinking it is all so true when it is not.
If we would do the same thing with truth and talk about it and say wow this is so true and if it is true then praise the LORD. Let’s allow ourselves to utter praises and the glories of God instead of always talking about our problems. As someone said, we can tell God how big our problems are but why don’t we tell our problems how big God is?
Psalms 119:15 I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.
Have you ever meditated on a problem? It’s so easy when someone annoys us but we need to meditate on God’s word. We must break the habit of meditating on our problems; in order to do that we must start a new habit the same way we started the old one. We need to meditate on the Lord’s word and enlarge it, dwell upon it and chew on it like a cow chewing its cud. This meditation isn’t looking at God’s word and saying I think according to my opinion that is right but this part is wrong. That is not healthy Bible study. Healthy Bible study is where we respect every word of God.
When Scripture Crosses Your Opinion
It is very easy to have cherished Bible texts that we love because they prove our theories and then there are the other Bible texts that prove the ‘enemies’ theories and we don’t like reading them. We think their texts are wrong and the others are right. In doing this we discriminate God’s word but the Bible says I will meditate and have respect to all thy ways. If a Bible text apparently crosses your opinion don’t get upset with the Bible text.
I once shared a Bible text with a friend. I read the text to him and he said that is just your opinion but I had not even said anything about the text, I just read it. It is easy for us not to respect the texts for what they are. Every word of God is pure. The Bible says if anyone removes any word from this book their name will be removed from the books of heaven. The same applies to those who add to the book. Let us keep it pure. The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked who can know it but God’s word is pure. Let us not mingle the two. God is right and I am wrong and that is it.
Psalms 119:16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.
In the process of overcoming we need to put God’s word in our minds so regularly that it is not forgotten. When something is forgotten where is it? It is not in your mind. It has gone out. The idea has left. The Bible text says we should talk about it hide it in our hearts and meditate out it and don’t let it leave the brain. If that is done continually and all we do is in reference to God’s word then we will be changed. Some people will find it hard to understand and say we can’t just read the bible every day.
Who Is In Your Picture Frame?
Is it easy to keep yourself in reference to everything? Do you see yourself doing everything? Are you conscious of yourself continually and how you feel about what is happening to you? Is self always in the picture frame? It is very easy to do everything in reference to self whether it is a business deal, a presentation or promotion what ever we do it is always in reference to benefitting ourselves. That is how we sin so we just have to do everything in reference to God and His benefits, so in all the equations God is there so whatever we are doing, at work or wherever we are we’re doing it in reference to the Lord being in the picture. He is there with me all the time.
Psalms 119:17 Deal bountifully with thy servant, [that] I may live, and keep thy word. 18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
Would you like to pray that prayer? So many people say the law is done away with and we don’t need the law. People love to quote the Psalms which says the Lord is my shepherd I shall not want. But what is the difference between that Psalm and this one that says open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. It is still in the same book. We can pick and choose our favourite little promises but here the prayer of the psalmist who wanted to cleanse his ways was; open my eyes so I can see from the law of God beautiful things. Naturally we see the law as full of dos and don’ts that are here to destroy our fun but that is the glasses of the Devil. After he deceived them, Adam and Eve looked at God as if He was gong to spoil their fun so they ran away.
If the law condemns us there is not a problem because we have a Saviour. When we come to the law it testifies that we are unrighteous therefore while ever it can seem an apparently bad thing to be condemned, it is actually a very good thing because it shows what true obedience is. This is my prayer that we will see wondrous things out of God’s law.
2 Timothy 3:2 …In the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves,
This is the test. Do we love ourselves more than God? Are we lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God having a form of godliness but denying the power? What is the power? The Word is the power. The Bible says He upholds all things by the power of His word or the powerful word. We have a form of godliness but we deny the word. How much power is in a suggestion? If there is a lot of power in suggestion and that is man’s power, how much more power has the Creator of the universe? When He speaks the words and we submit our heart to them and yield ourselves as His instruments to His suggestions and His will just like anyone else, if we do that our life will become powerful and we will go on from victory to victory and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
I pray this message was a help to you it was for myself to remind me again to keep this ever before me. We all need it. It is so easy to get dizzy or forgetful. We must move onward and upward.
