When Was the Papal Deadly Wound Healed?

Revelation 13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

In 1848, the great revolution which shook so many thrones in Europe, drove the pope also from his dominions. His restoration shortly after was through the force of foreign bayonets, by which alone he was upheld till his final loss of temporal power in 1870. The overthrow of the papacy in 1798 marked the conclusion of the prophetic period of 1260 years, and constituted the “deadly wound” prophesied in Rev.13:3, to come upon this power; but this deadly wound was to be “healed.” In 1800 another pope was elected; his palace and temporal dominion were restored, and every prerogative except, as Mr. Croly says, that of a systematic persecutor, was again under his control; and thus the wound was healed. But since 1870, he has enjoyed no prestige as a temporal prince, among the nations of the earth. {1897 UrS, DAR 160.1}

The infliction of the deadly wound points to the downfall of the papacy in 1798. After this, says the prophet, “his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.” Paul states plainly that the “man of sin” will continue until the second advent. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-8. To the very close of time he will carry forward the work of deception. And the revelator declares, also referring to the papacy: “All that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life.” Revelation 13:8. In both the Old and the New World, the papacy will receive homage in the honor paid to the Sunday institution, that rests solely upon the authority of the Roman Church. {DD 27.1}

The deadly wound was given to the first beast in 1798. The wound was healed when the papal government was restored, and another head created to the Catholic Church, as has been shown. Pius VII. was elected in 1800. When the deadly wound was given, the second beast was seen coming up from the earth. And all the work described in the life of this beast, comes down this side of 1800 a. d. {1890 JHW, FEE 166.1}

It was a deadly wound but it has been or is being healed, and both Daniel and John represent the Papacy as still fighting the truth even to the end of time. {April 1, 1897 EJW, PTUK 194.13}

Twice the Revelator carries as over the history of this beast. The first time, he concludes with its deadly wound, which was healed; and the second time, the same idea of wounding is conveyed: “He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity.” How much more clear the position, that Papacy received its deadly wound in 1798, about which time the temporal sovereignty of the Pope was declared to be wholly at an end. And, as the healing of a wound is a gradual work, so Papacy, since, a little after that time, has commenced and still continues to rise; while the world beholds, wondering. The power that led into captivity the saints of God for 1260 years, did go into captivity in 1798. A long standing quarrel, had existed between the Pope and Buonaparte, which reached its crisis about that time. {1854 JNL, THB 5.2}

This kingdom has been divided between Pagan Rome, the head wounded to death, and Papal Rome, the deadly wound healed, both “mixing themselves with the seed of men,” that is, uniting church and state, ecclesiastical and civil, in the government. {1842 WiM, MWV2 44.1}

The deadly wound was to be healed. This was accomplished in Bonaparte’s restoring the Papacy, but not to its former power. PICTURE – PROTESTANT AMERICA. AND TEXT {May 20, 1858 UrSe, ARSH 4.9}

But this deadly wound was healed. The papacy was not entirely abolished. It was re-instated, though it has never since enjoyed all its former power. {November 11, 1862 JWe, ARSH 188.5}

Just at the time the papal beast was lead into captivity, John beheld another beast coming up out of the earth. This other beast was responsible for the deadly wound being healed as he causes all the world to worship him. Therefore his deadly wound was healed again. This other beast arises out of the earth and does all the kind of things that the papal beast was doing before. This empire is able to restore the life of the head (papacy). Let us investigate very clearly what was this beast. What was a world power that was arising in 1798? Here is the documentation regarding the rise of this power :

The British were part of the Papal beast. They were a crown or a monarchy that had supported the Papacy. They are one of the ten crowns of the Papal beast (Revelation 13:1). So in order for British colonies in North America to become another beast they had to break away from the previous beast. They had to become independent of the British monarchy, independent of this crown.

Let the following extract from from a circular mandate of Bonaparte, under date of July 13, 1809, illustrate this point. “Though our Lord Jesus Christ sprang from the blood of David, he sought no worldly empire; on the contrary, he required that in concerns of this life men should obey Cæsar. His great object was,-the deliverance and salvation of souls. We, the inheritors of Cæsar’s power, are firmly resolved to maintain the independence of our throne, and inviolability of our rights.” [See the whole mandate, pp. 109, 110.] {1842 JoL, PREX1 106.3}

If Bonaparte did not here speak like a dragon, it is difficult to see how he could. {1842 JoL, PREX1 107.1}

Verse 12: “And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them that dwell therein, to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.” That Bonaparte healed the deadly wound of popery, is clear from history. After the revolution of the 11th of Nov. 1799, when Bonaparte, Sieyes and Ducos, were appointed a provisional consulate, one of the first acts of reform accomplished by them was, “the discarding of the HEATHEN RITUAL, and the re-opening of the churches for Christian wohship; and of this the credit was wholly Napoleon’s, who had to oppose the philosophic prejudices of almost all his colleagues.”-[Lockhart’s Napoleon, Vol. I., p. 154.] {1842 JoL, PREX1 107.2}

We have seen how its power was curtailed in 1798, at the close of the 1260 years (time and times and the dividing of time), and that its blasphemous pretensions have increased until the present time. This check that was put upon the papacy is represented in Rev. 13:3 by the statement that one of the heads received a deadly wound. The prophet saw this deadly wound healed, so that “all the world wondered after the beast.” This was partially fulfilled when Pius VII. was set in the papal chair, in place of the pope who had been deposed two years before. Its complete fulfillment, however, is yet future; for the prophet saw that the horn, “made war with the saints, and prevailed against them, until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the Most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.” Dan. 7:21, 22. A complete restoration to its former power yet awaits the papacy. But its triumphing will be short; for the Lord will soon come, and destroy “that wicked,” utterly consuming it (Dan. 7:11; 2 Thess. 2:8), and then “the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High.” Dan. 7:27. After what time is he seen coming up? In this prophecy, John tells us that he saw a beast coming up out of the earth, that caused the earth and them which dwelt therein to worship the first beast. When does he, the two horned beast, cause them to worship the first beast? Evidently, after the first beast is wounded, and his deadly wound healed; as the last clause of verse 12, says, “And causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.” Then he was seen by John, coming up, after the first beast was wounded. To learn when this was, we must ascertain when the first beast received a deadly wound. In speaking of the first beast, he refers to the beast he saw having seven heads, given in this chapter, verse 7. Verse 3, says, “And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed.”   {November 15, 1853 JWe, ARSH 149.14}

    Sunday worship does not exist from the papacy alone. They met every first day of the week to break bread… And the reason for this is that they (the teachers of the new covenant) were in the synagogue on the sabbath to dispute with the Jews. As far as I know they still gather on the sabbath which creates an exigent circumstance. I never got a straight answer why not on the sabbath everything from that was old testament to because sunday is the day Christ rose from the dead. So I did something rebellious and I read the scriptures. And because of that I know that Saturday is the Sabbath and will be as long as days exist. I also know that Sunday was the day of worship for the new church simply because their commission was to go first to the house of Israel. The Sabbath is not diminished except to people who have not studied the language of the inception of the Sabbath. What happened is that we were told a new thing and that was to take up our cross daily and follow Christ. So every other day became as important as the Sabbath and if you are about your fathers business… then the sabbath is taken care of by default. Remember the Sabbath day was set aside for the Lord in the old testament. In the new testament all the days are set aside for the lord.

      Not so. The sabbath was ordained in Eden as a perpetual covenant for all the children of Israel. The breaking of bread was not their church day. The New Testament says thy kept the sabbath day holy. Please read my studies on the sabbath and the New Testament

      Did the Christians of the New Testament church keep the Sabbath or no? Let us analyse the scriptures as our authority. Did Jesus keep the commandments of God or did he not?

      John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

      Jesus says by the testimony of himself he did keep the fathers commandments. Did he observe the seventh day Sabbath? Let us look at what his custom was.

      Luke 4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

      What did Jesus do customarily on the Sabbath? He went to the synagogue.

      Luke 4:31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath days.

      What did Jesus do on the Sabbath? He taught people. Jesus observed the seventh day Sabbath. Are we to follow the example of Jesus or do something different?

      1 Peter 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

      2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

      What did Jesus do? He left us an example so that we can follow in the same things that he was doing. What should we do with the example of Jesus?

      1 John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

      What are we to do? We are to walk in the same way that Jesus walked. Jesus kept the seventh day Sabbath and so should we. Did the new testament mean the seventh day Sabbath? Did some changes happen along the way? Did it mean something else other than the seventh day?

      Luke 23:52 This [man] went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

      23:53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

      23:54 And that day was the preparation, and the Sabbath drew on.

      23:55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

      23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment.

      Notice it says and that day was the preparation and the Sabbath drew on. We have a time line of each day and that the Sabbath was drawing. The Sabbath was drawing close and notice just before the Sabbath it says that day was the preparation. It talks about a day of preparation. The day before was the preparation day. Which day is the preparation day?

      Mark 15:42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

      The preparation day is clearly a day for the Sabbath. As the Sabbath is drawing on, the day of preparation is the day before that day. What else happened there? Notice the latter part of;

      Luke 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment.

      What does it say? The day of preparation was there and as they buried Jesus they went and did more preparation and when the Sabbath came they rested on the Sabbath. Why did they rest? According to the commandment. What commandment were they keeping? The one in Exodus;

      Exodus 20:10 But the seventh day [is] the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: [in it] thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that [is] within thy gates:

      The seventh day is the Sabbath according to the commandment. They kept the Sabbath according to the commandment and rested on that day.
