The Leaven of the Pharisee Part 4 – Twofold the Child of Hell

Twofold the Child of Hell

Audio: mp3

We continue our study on the seven woes to the Pharisees and it is important to study these woes because Jesus was talking to his disciples and he said to them, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees.

Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

A strong rebuke to the leaders in the days of Jesus. We know that all things happen for an example upon whom the end of the world has come. Hypocrisy the leaven of the Pharisees hasn’t actually left our world. We want to identify exactly what Jesus is saying. It is not too hard to understand exactly what he is saying. He is saying woe to the leaders because they compass and go around sea and land to make one proselyte and do we know what a proselyte is? A proselyte is someone in the days of Christ who was a gentile. To be made a proselyte was to come into the Jewish faith. They had to be circumcised but not only circumcised but they had to go through the doctrines that the Pharisees held and consent that they were true and to be willing to participate of the rituals of their faith and of their religion and then they were no longer a gentile. They were a Jew in the full meaning of the word. They were no longer classified as the seed of Abraham. Woe to the scribes and Pharisees, they go about to make one proselyte and when he is made you make him two fold more the child of hell than yourselves.

2 Peter 2:16 But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbad the madness of the prophet.

This is speaking of Balaam and these people are like Balaam. They do it for wages of unrighteousness.

2 Peter 2:18 For when they speak great swelling [words] of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, [through much] wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. 19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. 20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known [it], to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. 22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog [is] turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

The Bible saying that if we come to a knowledge of the truth and we don’t continue in it or we don’t improve, we go back into sin and it was worse than if we ever heard. We need to take caution from this because if we in all our missionary work only give people partial light, what does it actually do to them? If we only just do a little bit of service for God or if we mingle our service with God with a bit of the world, does it make them worse than before? Isn’t that what Jesus said? Woe to the scribes and Pharisees these church leaders who go about finding a soul, convert them to their religion and make them twofold the child of hell than themselves. Of these people who do it for wages gaining people into the church through wages it says:

2 Peter 2:18 For when they speak great swelling [words] of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, [through much] wantonness,

What do they promise? They promise liberty and do they really get liberty? No. because those who promise liberty, they themselves are servants of corruption. They are in bondage to sin. There is evangelical work going forward and evangelistic efforts made that only half do a job and the people that do them promise liberty in Christ and you will be free and you will be happy yet they themselves are living in sin. They say Christ covers our sins so we can live in sins because it’s all covered but it’s nothing short of the hypocrite that is a white washed sepulchre white on the outside but full of dead men’s bones. We need to be very aware of this that in all our work, every part that we do we are not just bringing people half way because if they come half way they are further than they ever were before and is that service to God?

No. there is a lot of vain swelling words. In the days of Christ these Jewish leaders would explain that salvation came through their religion, through their church that salvation is inside the church. If the church has Christ there is salvation but what is salvation? Is it the church or is it the truth? Is it 50% of the truth? 25%? 10%? 90%? It is 100% of the truth acted upon not just professed. Some will say we don’t go around getting one proselyte, we go around to get ten thousand proselytes and that just makes it ten thousand times worse. It doesn’t matter how many we get. If the evangelistic work doesn’t do a complete job and doesn’t have the support to lead people right out of sin, not just to promise them liberty when the people that have been in it for a long time are living in sin under a cloak of religion, that is not worth anything. These vain words are mentioned Jeremiah 7.

Jeremiah 7:1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2 Stand in the gate of the LORD’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the LORD, all [ye of] Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the LORD. 3 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. 4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, [are] these.

What sort of words? Don’t trust in lying words that the temple of the Lord is this. This building, structure, organisation is the temple of the Lord. What does the Bible say? Don’t trust in lying words because if we get people and say if you want to be part of the church you have to be baptised which in the Jewish ritual was circumcision, you have to tick off all the beliefs of the 28 fundamentals and line them up and say yes you agree to them, understand the ritual of the church, tithe paying and all the things that go on in the church and then once you are there you are a good church going person and you are part of the church you will be saved. Don’t trust in lying words because if we do not amend our ways and believe God and make an entire change of our life, then the truth of the matter is we were worse off by knowing that amount of truth and being in the church as a half-hearted Laodicean than if we were in the world. It would be better if we stayed in the world.

If we don’t want to follow the Lord stay in the world because the commitment for the Lord is total commitment. Everything that you do in your life has to be yielded to God, everything. All your plans, business adventures, all that is your cupboard, wardrobe, everything has to be committed to God. Whatever I do, whether I eat or drink, I will do all to the glory of God. That needs to be the mentality and not to trust in a structure of religion, a form of Godliness when I will confess that I love the Lord and yet all my life I never overcome my besetting sins.

Jeremiah 7:8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit. 9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not; 10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?

You will come to church and profess that the law has freed you from all these abominations so you don’t do them and really we are stealing. Some will say I haven’t stolen anything. Have you given your whole life unreservedly to God because how much of you has he paid for at the cross? How much of you? All. Have you given all? If you haven’t given all, guess what you are doing? You are a thief and thieving that which Christ has paid for. Here is a person who hasn’t given everything to the Lord. We have some reserves and think something’s we don’t have to give up. We have our religious and business life. We have our religious life and our social life. You are a thief if that is the reality.

Jeremiah 7:9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;

How many people go to church and have something against the brother in the pew next door or the pew behind and don’t like them and worship God? Is that not murder? It is murder. There are many people that come to church and church is a dress parade and everyone dresses up like a fashion statement and with these fashion statements how much adultery is committed to lust after someone? To see some body forms and have a lust for that? That’s committing adultery.

We don’t commit all our life to God and we dislike the brother in the pew next door and we look at all the girls around church. We think we can worship God because we are in the right church. We are glued to the pews. It said in Jeremiah 7:9 “and swear falsely”. I love the Lord but the question is do we love the Lord with all our heart, mind and soul? Do we love him supreme or do we love ourselves? If we love self and then we profess to love God, are we swearing falsely? Are we making a false statement?

Jeremiah 7:9 and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not; 10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name,

We can come to church and then go home and sit in front of the TV and watch all sorts of rubbish that is nothing short of Baal worship. All this is done and I can do all of that and dislike church members and I cannot give everything of my life to the Lord and I can look around at people and lust after people but no one knows so I am a good standing church going Adventist. Unless these things are approved in the church by the leaders, there are some woes. We need to take these things very seriously to ourselves. Unless we educate everyone stands singly and alone. If you are not being educated, you want to find some education in the lord. If you are being educated you want to do it otherwise the end will be far worse than before you even came to the lord. You were promised liberty and you got nothing but bondage.

Jeremiah 7:11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen [it], saith the LORD.

Have you seen it in yourself? What does God say? I see it can you see it? To the Laodicean, can they see it? No because the Laodicean will say I am rich and increased with goods and need of nothing and doesn’t they are poor, miserable, blind and naked. God is saying he sees something’s in the church and we say no its all good. We are doing grand evangelical work. We baptise 3000 people a day. In fact for the last six years consecutive the Adventist church has baptised 2800 people per day every day for the last six years and Jesus hasn’t come back yet because there is a lot of numbers game going on because then I can go into the conference room and put the tally on my name and I can say I have baptised so many people and get my bonus? Yet what’s being created is the worst thing that could ever be created.

But there is no union between the Prince of light and the prince of darkness, and there can be no union between their followers. When Christians consented to unite with those who were but half converted from paganism, they entered upon a path which led further and further from the truth. Satan exulted that he had succeeded in deceiving so large a number of the followers of Christ. He then brought his power to bear more fully upon these, and inspired them to persecute those who remained true to God. None understood so well how to oppose the true Christian faith as did those who had once been its defenders; and these apostate Christians, uniting with their half-pagan companions, directed their warfare against the most essential features of the doctrines of Christ. {GC 45.1}

There are certain pillars that today are being pulled down. Do you know why they are being pulled down? It is because many years ago in the 1930’s and 1940’s there were evangelistic campaigns that were just for the numbers because in the advent faith when an evangelist went to a place, do you know how long they stayed for? They did a campaign for six months and they would run Bible study classes and visit the people. Anyone interested in Bible studies or baptism, six months they laboured with these people. Do you know how long they do it today? 2 or 3 weeks all done.

That started in the 1940’s. now it says these half converted pagans, pagan is just a worldling, someone who comes in who loves the truth but loves its lifestyle in the world and brings the two together and that will war against the main features of our faith and they are going down because of what was done a while ago. We are just getting the leaven of the Pharisees coming through and it is coming through strong. We need to guard against this amongst our own ranks because if we have contacts, we want to study with them thoroughly so they understand what they need to give up and the power of Christ in all its reality and not just in imagination that if I say the name of Christ that I’m covered. He covers us when we take off self-righteous garments. We have to take something off before he will cover us. Eh will only cover the naked, not the self-righteous dress.

Halfhearted Christians are worse than infidels; for their deceptive words and noncommittal position lead many astray. The infidel shows his colors. The lukewarm Christian deceives both parties. He is neither a good worldling nor a good Christian. Satan uses him to do a work that no one else can do. {OHC 348.4}

Twofold the child of hell. Twice as good. Much better than a worldling for Satan. He loves to get a lot of people together to have a half conversion. He loves that. We can run something and we get a lot of people and we think wow the lord is moving when the devil is rubbing his hands. We think we are so successful when we want to make sure when we get someone that is interested that they are worked with and educated like the shepherds that are to feed the flock.

Jerusalem

We also id ourselves with the good parts of Jerusalem but are we willing to id ourselves with the bad parts of Jerusalem? The lord sees this den of robbers.

Jeremiah 7:12 But go ye now unto my place which [was] in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel. 13 And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the LORD, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not; 14 Therefore will I do unto [this] house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh. 15 And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, [even] the whole seed of Ephraim.

He is talking to Jerusalem and he is saying if you don’t believe me that I can do this, go down to Shiloh and have a look at the place. Have a look at it. As I have done that to them, I am going to you. There are many people that say the Lord could never throw off the Adventist church because it is prophesied to go through to the end. But I would like people to catch a plane and go to Israel today. Go to Jerusalem and have a look at the place. Have a good look at the place that was called by God’s name. if we don’t think that God can destroy his people again because they aren’t following him, if we don’t think he will do that, then we are no more deceived than the Jews that were in that city before it was besieged that said we have all these promises. Didn’t they have scripture to back them up? If you asked a Pharisee are you the church that is going to go through to the end, do you think they would give a good Bible study on that? I reckon they could preach a big lecture on it of how the ship will go all the way through. They could do it with all the Bible studies and convinced everyone from the Bible that Jerusalem was going to go through. There are so many statements that read that it will but we just need to go there and have a look what is that place like today. All those things happened for examples upon whom the end of the world is come. He said to them, go to Shiloh and have a look what I have done and he is saying to us today have a look what I have done to the Sabbath keepers back then. They observed the day Saturday but they did not follow Gods ways. They didn’t. they had a zeal but not according to knowledge. Let us not trust in lying words, let us never believe that if I am connected with institution that I’m saved. There is only one name whereby men shall be saved that is through Christ. Christ does have a people but the connection with those people does not mean your salvation.

Jeremiah 6:8 Be thou instructed, O Jerusalem, lest my soul depart from thee; lest I make thee desolate, a land not inhabited.

Do you believe we need the instruction of God to be saved? Do you believe that on a church level? Do you believe that the church needs to heed to the testimony of Jesus Christ in order to be saved? We want to believe that.

Jeremiah 6:10 To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear [is] uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.

Here God is trying to instruct his people and who was he instructing them through? Israel. Was it not the prophet Jeremiah? Are we not reading Jeremiah? Here is a prophet, a young fellow compared to the leaders and here he is speaking on the Lords behalf and he is saying to them, that they have uncircumcised ears and that they have no delight in the words. They were smiting Jeremiah with the tongue. It is no different with all the prophets. Whenever god’s church gets a prophet, do they really like hearing all the words of that prophet? They will have none of it.

Jeremiah 6:13 For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one [is] given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. 14 They have healed also the hurt [of the daughter] of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when [there is] no peace.

There are people hurting in the church, it’s okay just believe in Jesus. Glue yourself to the church, it will be okay, trust me. Peace, peace, it will be fine. It’s all okay. Is it all okay? It’s not okay. We haven’t given ourselves all to God. We’ve not believe every word that proceeds out of his mouth. We only like some of them. We only like the ones that will scratch our ear, that’s all we like.

Jeremiah 6:15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?

Are god’s people ashamed when they commit abomination? Were they then? No. All scripture is written for our learning. Are we ashamed when we commit abominations?

Jeremiah 6:15 nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time [that] I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.

Do you understand what that verse is saying? This verse should make us tremble this. Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? Do you know what the Bible says is an abomination? When man wears women’s clothing and women wears that which pertains to a man. That is an abomination. If a woman puts on a suit and pants that is an abomination. Do they blush today? No. that is absurd. That’s what it says. No they don’t. they say that is old. That is the old paths. That’s back then not today. We don’t blush today. They would have back then but they don’t today. There are so many abominations that the Lord has written, if we found them out to what is not acceptable before God, we would blush, not before the people around us, because before God we are naked. Do we blush? No.

Therefore means because of the reason previously, because of not blushing at the abominations that we do, because we don’t care about them and say its old hat, what will God do?

Jeremiah  6:15 …therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time [that] I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.

When will the lord visit the people that will fall? When that happen? Isn’t that the seven last plagues? Who will fall in the seven last plagues? Those of Jerusalem and if we want to always be consistent with our terminology, Jerusalem is gods people today, Sabbath keeping Adventists. If we don’t blush at the abominations that god has set before him, we will fall when they will fall and this frightens me because we have so much work to do. We have so much work to do in yielding ourselves to him. Because they don’t blush they say its old school.

Jeremiah 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where [is] the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk [therein].

We don’t want to go back to the old ways, we want to have today’s religion. The Seventh Day Adventist faith in the old days, in the 1800’s was far better than it is today in doctrine and in practise. If you talk about old Adventism, do you think people like that? We will not walk therein, we will not thank you very much. These people if we have this, if this is amongst us, we will fall when the world falls. When Jesus says woe to the scribes and Pharisees, this is sorrow and woe who go around get church members not educating them enough but only half. Only the theory or only the basics, baptising them, bringing them into the church and then flattering them, they become very zealous for something that they don’t know what is going on. They have a zeal, the young people have a zeal but not according to knowledge, they don’t know. They only know what they are being told. They are being told this is the church here are the basic proofs and they will fight tooth and nail for the denomination. They are twice the problem than before. Ezekiel speaks of the shepherds. Those that feed themselves.

Ezekiel 34:1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 2 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe [be] to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?

Have you experienced where you have nothing to give to the church or you are in the lower ranks of society that you get left on the side and all the talented and wealthy people get pushed to the front and there is a feeding of self with the leadership. We must avoid this. Wherever there is a soul that has come in from the lower ranks of society we must esteem them so much higher than yourself because it says blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. There is a blessing. Often in the western world we look upon these poor third world countries but those countries are richer than the western world because they are closer to the kingdom of heaven than the western world because they know that they are poor, miserable, blind and naked. Not everybody but there is a more fruitful field to go all the way if they are educated. If they have an opportunity to study themselves they will go a lot further.

Ezekiel 34:9 Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD; 10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I [am] against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.

God is against the shepherds that do not feed the flock. It’s all about numbers. He will cease them from feeding his flock. They will fall with the rest when they fall. Jeremiah 25 is talking of the end and the wine of Babylon and the cup of God’s wrath being poured out.

Jeremiah 25:15 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. 16 And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.

This is talking about the destruction of the nations before Jesus comes.

Jeremiah 25:32 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. 33 And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from [one] end of the earth even unto the [other] end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.

Would you like to be among those people? Would you like to fall when these people fall? We also know we are part of Gods church, we won’t fall, that is when we triumph.

Jeremiah 25:34 Howl, ye shepherds, and cry; and wallow yourselves [in the ashes], ye principal of the flock: for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished; and ye shall fall like a pleasant vessel. 35 And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape. 36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and an howling of the principal of the flock, [shall be heard]: for the LORD hath spoiled their pasture.

When does that happen? During the plagues. Upon who? The shepherds. Whose shepherds? The shepherds of Israel, the leaders of Gods professed people today. They will be utterly damaged and this makes me afraid because we must never ever be half hearted in our work. We must never allow a half-hearted condition. That is done by total submission to every word that God has said and every testimony that God has given through his prophet. To deliver all the truth in practise and not just preach it from the pulpit but to live it in my life. If I live it in my life then I am an example to the flock.

If I live it in my life and preach it from the pulpit and if the followers don’t do it, that is their choice but not mine because here is a howling, wallowing crying time for Pharisees and hypocrites who go around and get lots of people and only do a half job just to get themselves popular or to get their name out. Can you see why Jesus told his disciples beware of this? Beware of lying words? God has a people but those people won’t’ save you, Jesus will. Jesus will save you if you come to him with total self-abnegation and total willingness to follow every word and diligently. Diligent means a consistent earnest effort of mind to diligently seek him. This isn’t to scare anyone as many can get pumped up as the Lord is coming and many get really on fire but they don’t’ know how to do it. We need to spend time on the how of Christianity which is very important.

Zephaniah 2:1 Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired; 2 Before the decree bring forth, [before] the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you. 3 Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.

Meekness is a humble docile submissive mind that won’t harm anyone but is also seeking righteousness. Seek meekness, seek righteousness, it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lords anger because in the day of the Lords anger do you know who gets the most of the anger? Half-hearted Christians, Laodiceans and people that had the greatest light yet only partially put into practise. We want to be seeking this and be willing to follow the Lord wherever he goes because the 144,000, the people that will be living when Jesus comes in the clouds, they will follow the lamb wither soever he goeth. They are not stuck on a name or institution, they are stuck on him the rock and will be safe. I pray we can apply this in our own church and seek with all our hearts the Lord because the end is near.

Amen.
