God has a church and that church is the pillar and ground of the truth. That truth has been given in its appointed time and the possibilities were there for Christ to come back but man has sought to make improvements in various ways. While the testimony of Jesus was active in his church much advancement came but it was held in check. When the testimony of Jesus, the Spirit of Prophecy was silenced and Ellen White was laid to rest then the mice come out to play. In our last study we read a prophecy of what would happen if the desired changes would take place.

The principles of truth that God in His wisdom has given to the remnant church, would be discarded. Our religion would be changed. The fundamental principles that have sustained the work for the last fifty years would be accounted as error. A new organisation would be established. Books of a new order would be written. A system of intellectual philosophy would be introduced. The founders of this system would go into the cities, and do a wonderful work. The Sabbath of course, would be lightly regarded, as also the God who created it. Nothing would be allowed to stand in the way of the new movement. The leaders would teach that virtue is better than vice, but God being removed, they would place their dependence on human power, which, without God, is worthless. Their foundation would be built on the sand, and storm and tempest would sweep away the structure. Who has authority to begin such a movement? We have our Bibles. We have our experience, attested to by the miraculous working of the Holy Spirit. We have a truth that admits of no compromise. Shall we not repudiate everything that is not in harmony with this truth? {1SM 205.1, 2}

Everything that is not in harmony must be repudiated. When you talk about history in this time you always get comments of dialogue between people where there were differences of opinion. When something is being built there is always certainty about how it should be built and to have misunderstandings going into the discovery of truth is one thing but coming out on the other side when the building is complete and then having differences of opinion of what has already been built is a different matter. People point back to early Adventism and comment on the different ideas but the fact of the matter is Adventism did have a firm platform that was displayed to the public. At one time onlookers, Sunday keepers looked at that platform and said that it varied very little. At the beginning of the 1900s new light advocates were continually pushed back by Ellen White but Prescott was of a different character. He didn’t come out with his new light in a bold way. He held it to himself and chewed over it and it was leaven that boiled in his pot.

1915

The February before Ellen White died she made the following comment:

“I am charged to tell our people that they do not realize that the devil has device after device, and he carries them out in ways that they do not expect. Satan’s agencies will invent ways to make sinners out of saints. I tell you now, that when I am laid to rest, great changes will take place. I do not know when I shall be taken; and I desire to warn all against the devices of the devil. I want the people to know that I warned them fully before my death.” {Manuscript 1, February 24, 1915.}

Is this prophet prophesying the truth? Yes. Almost 100 years later we can testify that the Spirit of Prophecy was correct. Great changes have taken place. In 1916 John Loughborough addressed one of the changes that occurred although it started well before that time. He wrote the little book Questions on the Sealing Message in 1916. In it he answered three questions that commonly get asked today. You can read his answers to the following questions:

1. When did Adventists obtain the light on the Sealing Message?

2. When did the Sealing Work begin?

3. Will any who have died in the faith since 1848, when that message was received, be reckoned with the 144,000?

The following quote is included in the preface of the book:

In reference to the subject matter of this book – the sealed 144,000 – I have been greatly moved by the Spirit of God to write and publish the facts as to how the sealing message was obtained. {1916 JNL, QSM 3.3}

He was born in 1832. He had personal experience in the investigative judgement and was converted by the preaching of J. N. Andrews. He knows what they believed because he was there.

I have been greatly moved by the spirit of God to write and publish the facts as to how the sealing message was obtained, not only from the Bible, but by direct instruction in visions of Sister Ellen White; also as to how the message was received and taught by our ministers and people down to the year 1894, when the “new light” theory found its advocate in one who afterwards apostatised from the faith, and died without seeing the fulfilment of his expectation that he would live to the end of time, and hence be one of the 144,000. His claim was that later testimonies of Sister White taught that all the 144,000 would be made up of those who had never died. {1916 JNL, QSM 3.3}

When did that question start circulating? It is still tossed around today. People use Ellen Whites statements to say there will be no special resurrection and the 144,000 are made up of only those who are living at the close of probation. This book was written to answer that question. We have no doubt about what they first believed. You can read it in Folio Views under John Loughborough’s works.

I presented the substance of this tract in two discourses on the Stockton campground. Those who heard the discourses requested that it might be published, so that they could have the reading of it. As the subject is one on which there is some controversy, I thought our publishers would not wish to print the matter in their papers, or take the responsibility of publishing it in any form. So I have decided to bring it out as a small book, to be obtained through the mail, from the author. {1916 JNL, QSM 4.2}

This book is very comprehensive. Loughborough identified that the sealing work started in 1848 and those sealed from that time would be numbered with the 144,000.

If there is still a doubt of the resurrected Sabbath keepers’ being numbered with the 144,000, consider the following from Sister White’s words in 1909. At the General Conference in 1909, Elder Irwin had a stenographer accompany him in a call upon Sister White. He wished to ask her some questions, and have an exact copy of the words of the questions, and the exact words of the replies. Among other questions was this one: “Will those who have died in the message be among the 144,000?” In reply, Sister White said: “Oh, yes, those who have died in the faith will be among the 144,000. I am clear on that matter.” These were the exact words of question and answer, as Brother Irwin permitted me to copy from his stenographer’s report. {1916 JNL, QSM 31.1}

One of the pioneers, John Loughborough who was 84 years old at the time squarely met and answered this issue. In 1919 a bible conference run by the General Conference of the SDA church was held. At this conference there was large discussion about the inspiration of the Spirit of Prophecy whether the words were inspired and how to use her writings since Ellen White had passed away. You can find the 1919 bible conference minutes on the Internet in the archives on the SDA General Conference website or click here. What did Ellen White say to Prescott about the daily? She said leave it alone it is a small issue, leave it alone. In this Bible Conference Prescott and Daniels were talking about the inspiration of Ellen White. They came to the following conclusion:

W. W. Prescott “How should we use the writings of the Spirit of Prophecy as an authority by which to settle historical questions.” 1919 bible and History Teachers Conference minutes.

Was the daily an historical question? Absolutely.

A. G. Daniels “Well now as I understand it Sister White never claimed to be an historian and never claimed to be a dogmatic teacher of theology.” 1919 bible and History Teachers Conference minutes.

In this meeting they decided if anything had to do with history or the prophecies such as the French revolution or the Turkish Empire etc EG White didn’t have any authority on historical matters, so now they could be free to start changing the beliefs.

W.W. Prescott “Some of the brethren here remember very well a serious controversy over the interpretation of the eighth chapter of Daniel and there were some of the brethren who arraigned themselves against what is called the new view and they took her writings to uphold their position. She wrote to those brethren and instructed them not to use her writings to settle that controversy. I think that out to be remembered as being her own counsel when brethren claimed to believe the bible and the Spirit of Prophecy were divided over an interpretation it was a matter of public controversy.”

If you read the minutes you will see he is actually referring to the daily because it is in the eighth chapter of Daniel. At that time Sister White wrote to those who were supporting the old view and said to leave it alone and don’t use her writing to start arguing about it. She had already in the 1850’s made a declaration that she saw the word ‘daily’ was a supplied word by man’s wisdom and that those who gave the judgment hour message had the correct view. She didn’t want to be embroiled in the controversy over the daily. She just wanted them all to leave it alone and not to talk about it. But notice how Prescott says this is a very serious controversy. Was it really? No it was a small matter. What did she say would happen if he kept on about it? It would become a big issue. Then Prescott says those who take the other view should remember that they should not use her writings to support their view not remembering that Ellen White told him [Prescott] not to talk about it. So prophecy was fulfilled.

It will prove to be a great mistake if you agitate at this time the question regarding the daily. Which has been occupying much of our attention of late. I have been shown that the result of your making this question a prominent issue would be that the minds of a large number will be directed to an unnecessary controversy, and that questioning and confusion will be developed in our ranks… but I am instructed to tell you that this SMALL matter upon which you are concentrating your thought will become a great mountain unless you determine to let it alone. 12 MR 224.1

You suppose that a mistake has been made in the view that has been held by some of our brethren in regard to the sanctuary question. There have been different opinions regarding the daily, and there will continue to be. {12MR 225.1}

Prescott wasn’t the first to have a different view on the daily. So did A.T. Jones but he left it alone. It was nothing new that a few people saw it slightly different but they were to leave it alone. History stands the way the publications taught it.

If the Lord has seen fit to let this matter rest for so many years without correcting the same, would it not be wisdom on your part to refrain from presenting your views concerning it? I advise you not to present your ideas before our churches, but to let this matter alone, because at this period of our history the enemy will be served by an attack made on us regarding our disagreement on this point if it is made prominent, and this will lead to a WORSE issue. {12MR 225.1}

What transpired after the bible conference in 1919?

The Word of the Lord has guided our steps since the passing of the time in 1844. We have searched the Scriptures; we have built solidly; and we have not had to tear up our foundations and put in new timbers. Letter 24, 1907, p. 3. (To Elder A. G. Daniells, February 4, 1907.)

In 1844, was the daily used to identify the 2300 days? Yes because in Daniel 12 there is reference to the daily and connected to the daily are two time prophecies. One the 1290 day/year prophecy and the other the 1335 day/year time prophecy. These time prophecies depended on the time the daily was taken away in order to set up the transgression that makes desolate. She said in 1907 time prophecies were connected to the daily and she said we do not have to tear up our foundations and put in new timbers.

When men come in who would move one pin or pillar from the foundation which God has established by His Holy Spirit, let the aged men who were pioneers in our work speak plainly, and let those who are dead speak also, by the reprinting of their articles in our periodicals. Gather up the rays of divine light that God has given as He has led His people on step by step in the way of truth. This truth will stand the test of time and trial. Ms 62, 1905, p. 6. 1919 – Haskell’s Bible study Handbook

In the 1919 Bible Conference they questioned her inspiration on the historical works held by Adventists namely prophecy. She says:

..let the aged men who were pioneers in our work speak.. {MR760 10.5}

Who was one of the oldest pioneers at the time? It was Steven Haskell. Right at the time of the Bible Conference in 1919 where these so-called learned men such as Professor Prescott were expressing these new ideas Steven Haskell published his book called the Bible Handbook. If you want to know the answer to the Daily and any other historical questions such as Armageddon, King of the North, the trumpets etc read that book as it’s all in addressed brief explanation. It also encompasses the gospel and many other topics. This Bible Study handbook is one of those testimonies still to be borne by the aged men in the work.

Armageddon

In 1919 the First World War ended. When the war broke out the people thought it must be the battle of Armageddon and they naturally thought the King of the North would come to his end a belief that the Adventist church held at that time. At that time Turkey was very engaged in the war and at the close of the war Turkey lost a lot of its power and its borders shrunk.

The King of the North

In the Review and Herald there was an article to stay many thoughts that were swelling at the time in reference to the question on the king of the north.

“We have seen no new interpretation which in our judgement is superior to the old. We believe that the conclusions held by us from the beginning of this movement, that Turkey is represented by the term “King of the North” in the prophecy is correct. And because just at this present juncture in the affairs of this world there seem to be no prospect that turkey will plant her palaces at Jerusalem is no reason why we should change our view of the question. If we can not see then it is best to wait and bide God’s time for fuller light and watch Him work things around us as we believe His Word reveals that He will.” {RH January 30, 1919]

This man supported Turkey as the King of the North even though there were suggestions that it wasn’t. He was telling everyone to wait. New thoughts on the daily of Daniel 8 and the King of the North started rumbling from World War 1 and then in World War 2 again nothing happened. So they began to think perhaps they were wrong about their prophecy. By the close of World War 2 in 1944 they thought it was time to overhaul Daniel and Revelation by Uriah Smith on many levels not just the King of the North. Large parts of the book were rewritten, chopped up, thrown out and a huge amount of information was missing. In the 1944 edition there were things written there by another hand things that happened after Uriah Smith’s death. Many portions of Revelation 17, 8 and 9 and the seals to mention a few, were missing It doesn’t make sense when you read it. This is what the editors wrote in the forward of this revised version of Daniel Revelation.

“In offering this book to the public, the publishers believe they are doing a great service to its readers. The author of this book lived and wrote a generation ago, and in the literary and polemic style of those times. His interpretation of prophecy, however, and the doctrines of truth he established through intensive study of the Scriptures, have borne the test of time and of diligent scrutiny by Bible students. Indeed, they have borne the test so well that they are the more worthy of being perpetuated in a revised edition, and in the new setting of our times, which it is our great pleasure to offer in this present attractive form.” (Forward to the edited 1944 version of ‘Daniel and the Revelation’.)

In summary, they said it’s so great that they had to redo it! With these changes in 1944 other people started reinterpreting Daniel and Revelation. One man who lived at this time was Lewis F Weir. He rewrote his own views on the King of the North, the Trumpets and the Sealing message and other subjects. He twisted them all. He wrote a book in 1949 called Mrs Ellen White, Uriah Smith and the King of the North. In this book he referred to one statement by Ellen White (which actually doesn’t refer to the King of the North) where she said “he shall do according to his will”.

This phrase is also used in reference to the king of Persia and many other kings but he said that statement by Ellen White undoubtedly supported the King of the North. The rest of the book slanders Uriah Smith character because Uriah Smith opposed the 1888 message [although later he confessed his mistaken attitude and was duly reinstated in the good books.] In his book he says Jones is right and Uriah Smith is wrong. Many people say that Uriah Smith was wrong about Daniel and Revelation, but there is no statement about that at all. Ellen White only rebuked him over the 1888 message for not receiving the message given by Waggoner and Jones. In his book he upholds Jones and pulls down Uriah Smith but Jones actually believed the King of the North was Turkey.

Here is a question. If the son of a farmer had three paddocks and he wanted to plant wheat in the first, oats in the seconds and corn in the third. Then his father said to plant wheat in the first, oats in the second, and barley in the third so he plants wheat in the first, oats in the second and corn in the third, was he an obedient son? Was he obedient in two cases? Are you sure? How do you tell whether he was obedient? It is whether it crosses his opinion. He actually wanted wheat in the first paddock so who was he obeying? His father or himself? He was obeying himself. In the second paddock he also obeyed himself. It appeared that he was obeying his father in both instances but he wasn’t it was only that his fathers opinion agreed with his own. The test came on the third paddock where he wanted something else. So it is in the dialog about the King of the North.

Weir quotes in his book that James White believed the papacy was the King of the North and he upholds James White but he doesn’t agree with him on Armageddon. So just because you agree on one topic doesn’t mean that you are completely in harmony with that person. A lot of people are bitter towards Uriah Smith because he rejected the 1888 message and his rejection of the strong testimonies that came to him and they throw his book in the bin. In 1854 Uriah Smith was a young man and he had joined the Review the year before.

We do not believe that Russia is “the king of the north.” It is our opinion that any power that reigns over Syria is – for the time being – “the king of the north,” spoken of Daniel 11. Hence that the Turkish Dynasty is now [1854] that power. If Russia, Austria, England, or France should become possessed of supreme power over Syria, then it – which ever it might be – would become the king of the north.” Till then none but the Turkish Dynasty occupies that position, in our opinion. James White later wrote an article supporting a different view. Weir maintains in his book that early Adventists always believed the King of the North as the papacy until the 1870’s. That is not true. The following authors support Turkey as the King of the North.

Weir got his ideas from a book called ‘Faith of our Fathers’ written by Froom. In that book Froom makes a statement that has no support. He said “the first 16 years of Adventist history supported the papacy as the king of the north.” He has no support for it but Weir merely took on board the works of Prescott and Weir and wrote the book and people today have lapped it up. He also bought out the 144,000 are only those who are living at the close of probation. The following is a testimony to a family from Sister White:

You seem to have special bitterness against Elder [Uriah] Smith, and some others of our brethren, and you have talked out these feelings in your family, thus leavening them. The Lord has seen fit to counsel Elder Smith, to give him words of reproof because he had erred; but is this an evidence that God has forsaken him? {15MR 16.1}

The bitterness against Smith leavened this family. Can our negative speaking leaven people even of the good work they have done?

Satan will seek to divert the minds of those who should be established, strengthened, and settled in the truths of the first, second, and third angels’ messages. The students in our schools should carefully study Daniel and the Revelation, so that they shall not be left in darkness, and the day of Christ overtake them as a thief in the night. I speak of this book [Uriah Smith’s book] because it is a means of educating those who need to understand the truth of the Word. This book should be highly appreciated. It covers much of the ground we have been over in our experience. If the youth will study this book and learn for themselves what is truth, they will be saved from many perils. {1MR 63.4}

Do you take the Spirit of Prophecy where it agrees with you? When the testimony of Jesus says this book should be highly appreciated, do you agree with that? If it crosses your opinion and your take your opinion, are you obedient even though you have agreed with many other statements? No because the test of obedience is where something crosses your opinion.

The truth for this time has been brought out in many books. Let those who have been dealing in cheap sentiments and foolish tests, cease this work and study Daniel and the Revelation. They will then have something to talk about that will help the mind. As they receive the knowledge contained in this book, they will have in the treasure house of the mind a store from which they can continually draw as they communicate to others the great, essential truths of God’s Word. {1MR 62.4}

What is this book for? It is for communicating the prophecies to the world. A cheap sentiment is like a conspiracy theory. There are no such things in his book. How many prophecies today hang on conspiracy theories that excite the mind when the study of this book will give you something practical to talk about?

The light given was that Thoughts on Daniel and the Revelation, The Great Controversy, and Patriarchs and Prophets, would make their way. They contain the very message the people must have, the special light God had given His people. The angels of God would prepare the way for these books in the hearts of the people. {CEv 21.1}

Do you agree? Does this book have a special light? Some say it had a special light in their day but not today. We will come to that point in a moment.

Those who are preparing to enter the ministry, who desire to become successful students of the prophecies, will find Daniel and the Revelation an invaluable help. They need to understand this book. It speaks of past, present, and future, laying out the path so plainly that none need err therein. Those who will diligently study this book will have no relish for the cheap sentiments presented by those who have a burning desire to get out something new and strange to present to the flock of God. The rebuke of God is upon all such teachers. {1MR 61.2}

In the 1940s through to 1960s there was a movement called The Shepherd’s Rod. They did damage to these prophecies. They were not in line with Historic Adventism, even though they claimed to be. They got a following and then after a while it died flat. The Lord is not in that. The LORD has sustained this movement from 1844 through to 1905 and it was established upon a platform of Truth.

Four Special Books.–Daniel and Revelation, Great Controversy, Patriarchs and Prophets, and Desire of Ages should now go to the world. The grand instruction contained in Daniel and Revelation has been eagerly perused by many in Australia. This book has been the means of bringing many precious souls to a knowledge of the truth. Everything that can be done should be done to circulate Thoughts on Daniel and Revelation. I know of no other book that can take the place of this one. It is God’s helping hand. [–MS 76, 1901.}

Do you agree? Do you have your own opinion or will you take the testimony of Jesus, even if it crosses you? I want to make a point in reference to these four books. Each book has its special purpose. People that advocate Daniel and Revelation above any other book often disregard the Godhead. Ellen White is talking about four books that should go to the world. Daniel and The Revelation was written for prophecy. As for the divinity of Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit read the Desire of Ages and stand on that.

The interest in Daniel and the Revelation is to continue as long as probationary time shall last. God used the author of this book as a channel through which to communicate light to direct minds to the truth. Shall we not appreciate this light, which points us to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, our King? {1MR 63.1}

Is this a book for today? Do the canvassers canvas this book today? Not at all. Yet they say they do such a grand work. The prophet said a new order of books would be written. They would go into the cities and do a wonderful work. It is a wonderfully bad work. The testimony of Jesus said this book should continue as long as time shall last. God used the author of the book Daniel and the Revelation as a channel through which to communicate light and direct minds to the truth. We should appreciate not ridicule it for it points us to the coming of our Lord Jesus. Let’s take up the books that God has approves of and not other books written in the 1940’s that pull down and weaken the faith of the people in the pioneers.

The very same Satan is at work to undermine the faith of the people of God at this time. There are persons ready to catch up every new idea. The prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation are misinterpreted. These persons do not consider that the truth has been set forth at the appointed time by the very men whom God was leading to do this special work. {2SM 111.2}

If people don’t really want to read Daniel and Revelation, you can read Prophetic Waymarks by Steven Haskell. That book is in harmony.

These men followed on step by step in the very fulfillment of prophecy, and those who have not had a personal experience in this work, are to take the Word of God and believe on “their word” who have been led by the Lord in the proclamation of the first, second, and third angels’ messages.

That is an indictment to human pride. Do I have to believe someone else? Can’t the Lord channel me and give me special light to tell the world?

These messages, received and acted upon, are doing their work to prepare a people to stand in the great day of God. If we search the Scriptures to confirm the truth God has given His servants for the world, we shall be found proclaiming the first, second, and third angels’ messages. {2SM 111.2}

How many believe they proclaim the three angel’s messages? If you want to be part of the remnant you will have the testimony of Jesus. The testimony of Jesus says if you study those works to confirm them you will be preaching the first, second and third angel’s messages.

It is true that there are prophecies yet to be fulfilled. But very erroneous work has been done again and again, and will continue to be done by those who seek to find new light in the prophecies, and who begin by turning away from the light that God has already given.  {2SM 111.2}

When people find new light, what do they do? The first thing they do is turn away from the light that God has already given and play down what the pioneers have already written. That is erroneous work. Don’t pursue it. What did the General Conference say in 1895?

There is a call for new books, but the Third Angel’s message is all brought out in the publications we now have as far as it is developed, such as “Great Controversy,” “Patriarchs and Prophets” “Bible Readings” “Thoughts on Daniel and the Revelation” and “Two Republics.” (General Conference Bulletin, February 13th 1895)

According to the General Conference these books contain the third angel’s message. If you want to proclaim that message study these books and you will be on track.

“Our large books, “The Desire of Ages,” “Great Controversy,” “Patriarchs and Prophets,” “Thoughts on Daniel and the Revelation,” “Bible Readings” etc., are the pillars of our denominational literature.” (E. R. Palmer, The Missionary Worker, January 18th 1905)

Satan’s Plan

Satan’s plan is to weaken the faith of God’s people in the testimonies. When you read ones that cut across modern thoughts, it starts to weaken your faith in the Spirit of Prophecy. This is Satan’s plan.

“It is Satan’s plan to weaken the faith of God’s people in the Testimonies. Next follows skepticism in regard to the vital points of our faith, the pillars of our positions, then doubt as to the Holy Scriptures, and then the downward march to perdition. When the Testimonies, which were once believed, are doubted and given up, Satan knows the deceived ones will not stop at this; and he redoubles his efforts till he launches them into open rebellion, which becomes incurable and ends in destruction.” Testimonies, vol. 4, p 210-11

We need to be careful that we don’t disregard the testimonies. Our souls are dependent on it. As you begin to doubt Satan will work on your soul until you end up doubting the scriptures themselves. This is what happened when the work of unpinning the historical works began. Did the daily become a big issue? Was Ellen White right in regard to his sentiments of changing the historical works to suit his daily idea? Then all the other ideas followed.

1949 – The Nature of Christ

In His humanity Christ partook of our sinful nature. If not then He was not made like unto his brethren, was not, in all points tempted like as we are, did not overcome as we have to overcome, and is not therefore the complete and perfect Savior man needs, and must have to be saved. The idea that Christ was born of an immaculate, sinless mother, inherited no tendencies to sin, removed Him from the realm of a fallen world, and from the very place where help is needed. On his Human side, Christ inherited just what every child of Adam inherited, a sinful nature. On the Divine side, from His very conception He was begotten and born of the Spirit. And all this was done to place mankind on vantage ground, and to demonstrate that in the same way every one who is born of the Spirit, may gain like victories over sin in His own sinful flesh. Without this birth, there can be no victory over temptation, and no salvation from sin. {Bible Readings for the Home Circle, 1915 Edition.}

This paragraph remained in Bible Readings for the Home Circle and circulated until 1949. There was an article written in 1956 in relation to this point:

“In fact, this particular point in Adventist theology had drawn severe censure from many outstanding Biblical scholars both inside and outside our ranks.”

Scholars within their own ranks and from other churches began attacking the church on what was written in this book. What did they do? They’ve changed their historical works. In 1956 an article appeared in the Ministry magazine by Roy A. Anderson:

“His was not a corrupt, carnal nature. When He took upon Him sinless human nature. He did not cease to be God, for He was God manifest in the flesh! ” {Roy A. Anderson, “Human. Not Carnal.” Ministry magazine, September 1956.}

From this time these thoughts of the nature of Christ began changing.

1957

“He was indeed a man, but withal He was God manifested in the flesh. True, He took our human nature, that is, our physical form, but He did not possess our sinful propensities.” {R. A. Anderson, “God With Us.” Ministry. April, 1957.}

These changes came in because at that time there were two men evangelical men Martin and Barnhouse who ran a magazine called Eternity Magazine. They wanted to do a study on the cults in America. They wanted to examine whether the Adventist Church was a cult or not. The General Conference got nervous because the Sunday churches were looking at them. These are the points that were being addressed because these men and churches didn’t like the Seventh-day Adventist stand on the Nature of Christ, Ellen White as a prophet and the Day of Atonement in relation to the 2300 days. The Sunday churches had a problem with Advent Theology and so we read in the Ministry magazine in 1957 the following statement:

“the sacrificial act of the cross was a perfect, complete, and final atonement.” {Ministry, February, 1957.}

What is there a day of atonement for? One by one the nature of Christ, the position of Ellen White and the atonement was taken away. If the atonement was completed at the cross, why do you ever need a Day of Atonement? There is no point for it.

As the priest entered the most holy once a year to cleanse the earthly sanctuary, so Jesus entered the most holy of the heavenly, at the end of the 2300 days of Daniel 8, in 1844, to make a final atonement for all who could be benefited by His mediation, and thus to cleanse the sanctuary. {EW 253.1}

When was the final atonement on the cross? Before or after 1844? After 1844.

“But again, they [the Sunday churches] say the atonement is made and finished on Calvary, when the Lamb of God expired so the churches and world believes; but it is none the more true or sacred on that account.” Crosier replies. Day-Star, Extra, February 7, 1846.

The Sunday churches were saying that in 1846. What happened in the second angel’s message? God separated a people from the Sunday churches to give them his truth. Just because the Sunday churches believed that it doesn’t mean that it is true. This is the groundwork of our church. When Martin came the second time to the General Conference after he announced his intention of writing an article on the cults of America and to identify the churches the General Conference in the 50s were very stressed.

“On a second visit, he Martin was presented with scores of pages of detailed theological answers to his questions. Immediately it was perceived that the Adventists were strenuously were denying certain doctrine positions which had been previously attributed to them. As Martin read their answers he came, for example, upon a statement that they reputed absolutely the thought that seventh day Sabbath keeping were a basis for salvation and a denial of any teaching that the keeping of the first day of the week is as yet considered to be the receiving of the anti-Christian mark of the beast” {Eternity Magazine p. 6,7 September 1956.}

If you read the article in its entirety he said to them well in the bookstore that is joining this building there is a book that says keeping the Sabbath was a basis of salvation and the mark of the beast is Sunday. Do you know what they did then? They went and took those books off the shelf and they wrote another book. That book is called “Questions on Doctrine”. They distributed this book free as it was really important to them. They sent it to thousands of seminaries and colleges and Bible institutes from all denominations and by the 1970’s 136,000 copies were given out. If they had done that with Daniel and The Revelation it would have been great. This book distributed was a means to really join back with the Sunday churches.

“…the Adventists had a definite theological platform, which through the years has varied little, but which in comparatively recent years has undergone a very definite evolution toward a more forthright declaration concerning the principles of the historic Christian faith, especially as they are embodied in the tenets of orthodox [Evangelical] Christian theology.” Eternity Magazine, October, 1956.

What was happening? These people saw the Adventists had a definite platform and now they identified they are coming back to the orthodox Christian faith. When did Adventism leave the churches? In 1844 in the second angel’s message and now to come back and deny these principles in many different respects, some are still standing but largely many of these tenets have been pulled down.

The message we have to bear is not a message that men need cringe to declare. TM 470.1

If the atonement is completed on the Day of Atonement then it is. We don’t need to cringe about that. If the nature of Christ is what it is don’t cringe about it. If the prophecies are what they are don’t cringe about it, just say it.

They are not to seek to cover it, to conceal its origin and purpose. Its advocates must be men who will not hold their peace day nor night. TM 470.1

Does that sound like a Nehemiah?

As those who have made solemn vows to God, and who have been commissioned as the messengers of Christ, as stewards of the mysteries of the grace of God, we are under obligation to declare faithfully the whole counsel of God. We are not to make less prominent the special truths that have separated us from the world, and made us what we are; for they are fraught with eternal interests. TM 470.1

If the things that have made the Seventh Day Adventist church what they are have been reputed then are they Seventh Day Adventists? No not at all. They can say it but it means nothing. If these special truths are fraught with eternal interests will they go away? No not at all. Does that mean the change of Adventism needs to go back toward the Sunday churches? Not at all! We read that the sealing message is like the shining sun which was never to set. For Seventh Day Adventists to take a stand with the Sunday churches is simply to deny the way the LORD has led the church in the past. Every deviation from the truth as it has been advocated in the past is a departure from the truth.

God is leading out a people, and bringing them into the unity of the faith, that they may be one, as he is one with the Father. Various views and differences of opinion must be yielded…

What has to yield? We have to yield some of our opinions. Any opinion that is out of sync with God’s word and the testimony of the Spirit of Prophecy must be yielded if we want to be in unity.

..that all may come in union with the body, that they may have one mind and one judgment. {RH, May 6, 1862 par. 3}

In reviewing our past history, having travelled over every step of advance to our present standing, I can say, Praise God! As I see what God has wrought, I am filled with astonishment and with confidence in Christ as Leader. {GCDB, January 29, 1893 par. 5}

Who was leading? The prophet or Christ? The Lord brought Israel by a prophet. The LORD that bought Israel out by the use of a prophet. The prophet says she has confidence in Christ as leader.

We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history. {CET 204.1}

If we forget these things or if we don’t even know what these truths are, we need to be afraid. We need to study but not for the purpose of arguing. This seminar is not to convince people who are dead set in their tracks. It is a call for those who want to be genuine Seventh Day Adventists in deed, in action because I love the Seventh Day Adventist Church that was give by God but there is a new Seventh Day Adventist Church that is not. My great, great, great grandfather came to the Seventh Day Adventist faith by a colporteur in the 1890’s. I need to make a decision as to whether I should rely on the modern teachings or should I rely on what my grandfather accepted. The Bible says ask for the old ways and consider the paths of many generations.
