A Ribbon of Blue

Numbers 15:37 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 38 Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: 39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring: 40 That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God.

Garments of Righteousness

Revelation 19:8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

Nominal Christians


Isaiah 4:1 And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

It Is No Trivial Matter

Our words, our actions, and our dress are daily, living preachers, gathering with Christ or scattering abroad. This is no trivial matter to be passed off with a jest. 4 T 641.


It increases crime God designed that there should be a plain distinction between the dress of men and women, and has considered the matter of sufficient importance to give explicit directions in regard to it; for the same dress worn by both sexes would cause confusion and great increase in crime. {1 T p. 460}

Fashion Affects Mostly Women

Satan has invented manifold temptations to divert the minds of mothers from their most important work. The matter of dress holds the larger share of women in the eriest bondage. {HR, March 1, 1877 par. 3}

Pride and extravagance in dress are sins to which woman is especially prone. {CG p. 415}


Fashion affects the wearer and the beholder Showy, extravagant dress too often encourages lust in the heart of the wearer and awakens base passions in the heart of the beholder. God sees that the ruin of character is frequently preceded by the indulgence of pride and vanity in dress. {4 T p. 645}

7 Sins of Worldly Fashion

Promotes Pride Immoral Unhealthy Immodest Expensive Time Consuming Perverts Character It is a terrible sin!

There is a terrible sin upon us as a people, that we have permitted our church members to dress in a manner inconsistent with their faith. We must arise at once and close the door against the allurements of fashion. Unless we do this, our churches will become demoralized. {4T 648.1}

Enough Reason for Church Discipline

Be not hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Fashion is deteriorating the intellect and eating out the spirituality of our people. Obedience to fashion is pervading our Seventh-day Adventist churches and is doing more than any other power to separate our people from God. I have been shown that our church rules are very deficient. All exhibitions of pride in dress, which is forbidden in the word of God, should be sufficient reason for church discipline. {4T 647.2}

We can’t yield one inch to fashion! Our only safety is to stand as God’s peculiar people. We must not yield one inch to the customs and fashions of this degenerate age, but stand in moral independence, making no compromise with its corrupt and idolatrous practices. {5T 78.2}

It is Proud, Immodest, Unhealthy, and Expensive Pride, ignorance, and folly are constant companions. The Lord is displeased with the pride manifested among His professed people. He is dishonored by their conformity to the unhealthful, immodest, and expensive fashions of this degenerate age. {4T 634.1}

Let their minds be directed to the suffering which they might relieve. Help them to see that by every dollar squandered in display, the spender is deprived of means for feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and comforting the sorrowful. {Ed 248.2}

It Consumes Time


This idolatry of dress destroys all that is humble, meek, and lovely in the character. It consumes the precious hours that should be devoted to meditation, to searching the heart, to the prayerful study of God’s word. {MYP 359.4-360}

It Affects Character

Perhaps no question has ever come up among us which has caused such development of character as has the dress reform. 4 T 636

A person’s character is judged by his style of dress. A refined taste, a cultivated mind, will be revealed in the choice of simple and appropriate attire. Ed 248

Effects of Unhealthy Dress


The amount of physical suffering created by unnatural and unhealthful dress cannot be estimated… Displacements and deformities, cancers and other terrible diseases, are among the evils resulting from fashionable dress. {4T 634.4-635}

The cause of ½ of the female diseases

Half the diseases of women are caused by unhealthful dress. {HR}

Disease of every type is brought upon the body through the unhealthful, fashionable style of dress. {4 T, p. 582}

Not 1 In 20 Dress Right


Another reason which I offer as an apology for calling attention again to the subject of dress is that not one in twenty of the sisters who profess to believe the Testimonies has taken the first step in the dress reform. {1T 465.2}

It Is Symbolic Of Christ


So the dress of Christ’s followers should be symbolic. In all things we are to be representatives of Him. Our appearance in every respect should be characterized by neatness, modesty and purity. {4 T p. 96}

Modest Dress Will Protect Women

Chaste simplicity in dress, when united with modesty of demeanor, will go far toward surrounding a young woman with that atmosphere of sacred reserve which will be to her a shield from a thousand perils. {Ed 248.5}

Long Dresses Are Female Attire

There was a clear distinction in dress between men and women. The female long and tight dress was unhealthy & a sin.

Not to Be Tight At Waist

The pants & shorts are equally tight, unhealthy, and a sin It is injurious to health, and therefore, sin for females to wear tight corsets, or whalebones, or compress the waist. {How to Live, no. 6, p. 57}

Women Wearing Pants without a long skirt is an Abomination! I saw that God’s order has been reversed, and His special directions disregarded, by those who adopt the American costume. I was referred to Deuteronomy 22:5: “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.’ God would not have His people adopt the so-called reform dress. It is immodest apparel, wholly unfitted for the modest, humble followers of Christ. There is an increasing tendency to have women in their dress and appearance as near like the other sex as possible, and to fashion their dress very much like that of men, but God pronounces it abomination. {1T 457.1}

Those who practice abomination will not go to heaven

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

E. J. Waggoner on Dress


In Lydia… married and unmarried females prostituted themselves at the festival of the god (Egyptian Hercules, a sun god). The two sexes changed their respective characters; and tradition reported that Hercules himself had given an example of this, when, assuming the vestments and occupation of a female. E. J. Waggoner (1891). Sunday, p. 20.

It is against the 3rd Angel’s Message Those who feel called out to join the movement in favor of woman’s rights and the so-called dress reform might as well sever all connection with the third angel’s message. The spirit which attends the one cannot be in harmony with the other. The Scriptures are plain upon the relations and rights of men and women. {1T 457.3}

It destroys influence

With the so-called dress reform there goes a spirit of levity and boldness just in keeping with the dress. Modesty and reserve seem to depart from many as they adopt that style of dress. I was shown that God would have us take a course consistent and explainable. Let the sisters adopt the American costume and they would destroy their own influence and that of their husbands. They would become a byword and a derision. Our Saviour says: ‘Ye are the light of the world.’ ‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.’ There is a great work for us to do in the world, and God would not have us take a course to lessen or destroy our influence with the world.” {1T 457.4-458}

It resembles the men’s attire

The foregoing was given me as a reproof to those who are inclined to adopt a style of dress resembling that worn by men; but at the same time I was shown the evils of the common style of woman’s dress, and to correct these, also gave the following found in Testimony for the Church, No. 10: “We do not think it in accordance with our faith to dress in the American costume… {1T 458.1}

What is the American Costume?

There is still another style of dress which is adopted by a class of so-called dress reformers. They imitate the opposite sex as nearly as possible. They wear the cap, pants, vest, coat, and boots, the last of which is the most sensible part of the costume. Those who adopt and advocate this style of dress carry the so-called dress reform to very objectionable lengths. Confusion will be the result. {1T 459.7}

The American Costume


In wide contrast with this modest dress is the so-called American costume, resembling very nearly the dress worn by men. It consists of a vest, pants, and a dress resembling a coat and reaching about halfway from the hip to the knee. This dress I have opposed, from what has been shown me as in harmony with the word of God. {1T 465.1}

What would Paul say?

God designed that there should be a plain distinction between the dress of men and women, and has considered the matter of sufficient importance to give explicit directions in regard to it; for the same dress worn by both sexes would cause confusion and great increase of crime. Were the apostle Paul alive, and should he behold women professing godliness with this style of dress, he would utter a rebuke. ‘In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.’ The mass of professed Christians utterly disregard the teachings of the apostles. {1T 460.1}

Never imitate men’s attire


Dr. Austin

We shall never imitate Miss Dr. Austin or Mrs. Dr. York. They dress very much like men. We shall institute a fashion which will be both economical and healthy. Letter to brother and sister Lockwood dated September 1864 by E. G. White; appeared in Review and Herald, May 1944.

Don’t Be A Bloomer


Sister White clearly spoke out against and advised not to adopt the Bloomer or the American Costume or the so-called dress reform which included wearing pants in public so that they extended beyond the length of the skirt.

They have all styles of dress here.… I think we can get a style of dress more healthful than they wear and yet not be Bloomer or the American Costume. Letter to Brother and Sister Lockwood, September 1864, Review and Herald, May 4, 1944, by E. G. White

Read verse 25: “Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.” I was shown that this scripture will be strictly fulfilled. 1 T 270

Hate the Fleshly Garments



Jude 23 And others save with fear, pulling [them] out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

The message of Christ is go and sin no more.
