False Sanctification

The scripture declares that the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it. Are you deceived? Do we know that our hearts are deceitful above all things? We acknowledge that many people in this world are deceitful. Do we acknowledge that our own hearts are deceitful above all else? There are many conspiracy theories going around today. We don’t trust people. Someone may knock at our door and we look at them sideways. We may get an email from someone we don’t know and we are afraid of picking up a virus and we don’t trust people. We think we might be deceived by everything that comes to us. Yet we trust ourselves so much. Everything else comes secondary to the deceit that lies in our own heads. An atheist was telling me that we cannot trust anything, not even our senses or perceptions. He said you sitting next to me might not really be there and my mind may be playing tricks on me.

He believed that nothing was absolute, even gravity. He said we just perceive that it is. He saw that the mind was so deceitful to the extent that his own heart was deceiving him that nothing was true. Our perceptions are not reliable. There needs to be something outside our perceptions that gives a benchmark, a truth to things that are not generated from our own head or someone else’s head. This perception is what Satan has worked upon to create so much confusion in the world. This was done through a serpent.

Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:  3 But of the fruit of the tree which [is] in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.  4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.  6 And when the woman saw that the tree [was] good for food, and that it [was] pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make [one] wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

The serpent comes to the woman and puts a doubt to the words of God. He said hath God said. Then he said the exact opposite, you will not surely die. As the serpent was communicating to the woman she started seeing things differently. When she saw that the fruit was good and would make her wise she took the fruit. Before that she saw the fruit as a forbidden reality. After the serpent spoke she saw in her own mind something that was not and then she sinned. Did the serpent just bite her? As the serpent bites, the poison creates an altered state of consciousness. The state of what you perceive and hear is altered. That is what poison does.

Genesis 3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What [is] this [that] thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

Eve was deceived, tricked and beguiled. How would you go? Would you do anything different? The first book of the Bible talks about a woman and a serpent and the last book of the Bible talks about a woman and a serpent also.

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Was it only Eve that was deceived? The whole world has an altered state of consciousness. It looks at and sees things wrong. That is what happens within us. The heart is deceitful above all things because it is injected with this poison. We cannot trust ourselves any more.

Revelation 12:12 Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

The devil is angry. He is snake with a temper. He is not just slithering past but if he sees you he will bite you and his poison changes the way you view life.

Revelation 12:13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man [child].

Here is the same scenario. The story of the fiery serpents in the wilderness is a true depiction of God’s children living in a world where there are many serpents. It says the serpents’ seed and the woman’s seed. There is to be a multiplication of God’s faithful people as well as serpents. There are serpents all around. When we are bitten we don’t view life correctly. There is only one remedy. What are a few deceptions?


Proverbs 20:1 Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Does alcohol change the way you view things? Absolutely. It’s a deception because it gives a pleasant view of things for some people while others see offences all around them. It alters your state of consciousness. What is another deception of Babylon?


Revelation 18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

By the sorceries that are practiced today, your state of consciousness and how you view things is changed. The word sorceries come from that root word Pharmacia which means pharmacy or drug. There are drugs in this world that change the way you view life. People are addicted so much that if they don’t have their drugs they can’t cope with life anymore. They have to have their fantasy.

Sex and Music

It’s not just substances. There is the drug of sex or the drug of music. Music changes the way you view life and your state of consciousness. Media changes how you perceive life. You may think a certain way and then after reading a novel you see things very different. When a snake bites you, your life changes generally to the point of death. This world has geared its way through all the pleasures of this world to create drugs either externally or internally. All these things cause us to view wrong as right.

The Deception of Religion

But there is a stronger deception. That deception comes from religion. What are the remarks of John the Baptist?

Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Here is a brood of vipers. The young people from the previous generation were bitten and they became snakes and deceive others.

Matthew 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

3:9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to [our] father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

3:10 And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

He is saying don’t think that because you have a history of godliness that you are godly because when you think that you are deceived. Don’t allow the thought that because you belong to a certain church you will be saved. That is more dangerous than alcohol. Addicts know that they are wrong and can’t go to heaven in their condition. In the religious world error being taught as truth is extremely bad. John the Baptist goes on to say that what the tree brings forth determines its destiny. Be not deceived God is not mocked for what a man sows that shall he also reap. It is what your produce (bring forth) that counts it’s not where you belong or the line you came from. It’s what is brought forth in your life that determines what tree you are. What does Jesus say?

Matthew 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

23:30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

23:31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

23:32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

23:33 [Ye] serpents, [ye] generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

We can look at the Jews and say that I’m not a Pharisee I’m a Christian. The mentality is that the heritage I come from saves me. Don’t think that. The other thought is that if I had been there I would have been faithful. For example, we wouldn’t have whinged about the bread in the wilderness. Those thoughts are the fruit of deception. All these thoughts come from being bitten. What does Jesus says to the Pharisees?

John 8:44 Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

8:45 And because I tell [you] the truth, ye believe me not.

The Jewish leads had their established organisation. It was well founded with had a long history and along came a young man thirty years old from Nazareth a carpenter’s son. He started sharing things that were radical. What he spoke wasn’t new it was the old truths brought out again the truths that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob believed. They didn’t believe Jesus because he came from Nazareth and had no earthly father. How many people reject truth because of whom it comes through? If it doesn’t come through someone we don’t recognize we think it must be error. They didn’t receive Jesus because the teachings of their day were not in line with their understanding of the teachings of Abraham.

Before Abraham was, I am

Old primitive faith was what they needed but to them they thought it was new so they rejected him. There are teachers today that teach doctrine/wine that gives an altered state of consciousness.

Isaiah 29:9 Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.

29:10 For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.

29:11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which [men] deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it [is] sealed:

29:12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.

29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near [me] with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

A class of people that are staggering around drunk but not with wine but with spiritual doctrine that is error. That causes them to perceive something that is not true. They draw near with their lips and honour God but their hearts are in the opposite direction. Sometimes the most beautiful words came from drunkards as they cry on your shoulder and say they are sorry and they want to repent but when they are sober it is the last thing they want to do. So it is in the Christian world. We tend to look down on people like that but the Christian world is no different. They go to church and cry and say they really want to follow the Lord and when they get home they do nothing. They are no different to the drunkard. They perceive and feel things that they wouldn’t normally experience in a normal day. Such religion is false. Those religions don’t normally spend a lot of time studying the Bible especially the King James Bible. They say it’s complicated and too hard to understand so they revise the words and spend more time singing. Then the doctrines slip away and they begin teaching the doctrines of men with a little biblical connection but aren’t biblical at all. Just like psychology. It teaches some good things. It teaches we should boost one another up with self-esteem. Religion has picked that teaching up but is it biblical. What lifts us up our own mind and encouragement from others or Jesus? The Bible says humble yourselves and He will lift you up not you He will. That is different self-esteem altogether. It is not us putting a value on ourselves it is God putting a value on us. So many times we misevaluate ourselves. Our hearts are deceitful and our carnal nature is worth nothing at all but we say our person/you is worth everything. We put so much value on our carnal nature that for me to be worth anything I need to have all the fashion accessories and I need to pretty myself up to be acceptable. That is a misevaluation. There are a lot of teachings that are wrong. One is that we can live in a life of sin and still be saved. What does the apostle say? The text begins saying don’t you know, haven’t you got it as a conscious reality?

1 Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Don’t be deceived, don’t be a hearer only but a doer of God’s word. Deception comes by thinking that the practical action of your life is not required in the process of salvation. That is pure imagination. Be not deceived. If there are practices in your life that are wrong, don’t be deceived. Those things must be overcome. Don’t try to justify yourself or your action but acknowledge that someone outside your head has told you that it is wrong. The meaning of sin is often different according to who you ask. Generally it is thought that sin is everything I don’t do and what I do is okay. Let us take something outside of our own head (the Bible) and read and see. Fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves or thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortionists will not inherit the kingdom of God. You can see the deception that we can live a life of sin and still be saved. If they are your thoughts you have been bitten.

Another Greater Deception, Satan’s Masterpiece

But there is a more dangerous deception than that? It is the greatest deception Satan has.

This false sanctification is most dangerous and deceptive in its influence upon all who accept it. A peculiar atmosphere surrounds them, an influence which, when brought in contact with others, if not discerned, is breathed in unconsciously by the receiver. This atmosphere is charged with poison which is death to spirituality. There are no snares of Satan more hard to be discerned and defined, and souls be rescued from, than this delusion. {ST, October 23, 1879 par. 6}

Do you want to know what it is? It is Satan’s masterpiece.

Those who accept this bogus sanctification do not hesitate to draw away from the body and set themselves up as criteria. They claim that the Lord is leading them, and do not seek counsel of the church, but move out independently, deceived in themselves and deceiving others. The poison of this so-called sanctification is inhaled, and the atmosphere, apparently so balmy, is intoxicating and destructive to those who are charmed with it. Each individual will have an independence of his own, claiming to be taught of God; therefore no one must get in their way or interfere with their course of action. This is as Satan would have it. The voice of the church, God’s delegated power upon earth, is set aside and despised. These professedly sanctified ones are filled with vain conceit, and with presumption move on in their own wisdom, exhorting others to come up to the exalted standard of themselves. They disregard the teachings and prayer of Christ that his disciples may be one as he was one with the Father, “that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” The unity and oneness of the church was to be the living epistle, known and read of all men. The world was to see in their harmony and love for each other the life of Christ exemplified. {ST, October 23, 1879 par. 7}

Individuals, who will strike out upon some new light and some new truth, independent of the body, are pursuing a course directly contrary to the word of God. If they have any influence over others, it is to disaffect them and lead them away from the watchcare, counsel, and strength of the body. And the very ones who claim sanctification, have in their hearts insubordination, pride, envy, jealousy, and evil surmising of their brethren. They sit as judges upon the life and character of their brethren. These are the fruits generally to be found growing upon the tree of false sanctification.

Can you see why this is the most difficult one to get out of? Can you discern what it really is? If you are addicted to substances it is quite obvious that you are not right. Then there is the second deception that you have a form of godliness. If everything is generally okay on the outside and some private things are not it doesn’t matter because they are not seen but this one actually has everything right on the external but on the inside there is pride envy, jealousy, and evil surmising of their brethren. Is that hard to detect? It is very hard to detect if it is veiled well. This is bogus sanctification when we put ourselves up as the criterion. That people must do as I do and not rely on the body of the church which was established in those fifty years of safety that was the establishment of God in Seventh Day Adventist history from 1855 to 1905 in which was established principles that we can live on. Now there are people who are adding new light saying we must keep feast days and they say if you don’t do what I am doing you are lost. It all seems right but the biggest give away is they don’t get along with anyone. That is the fruit hanging on the tree. They neglect the teachings and prayer of Christ that his disciples will be one as He is one with the Father and they sit as judges upon the life and character of their brethren. This is an inhouse relationship. From the external it all looks really good and then you come into the society of these people and things are not very good at all because there are attitudes lying there that disregard the teachings of Christ within their body.

Christ prayed for his disciples: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.” {RH, April 27, 1897 par. 1}

In this prayer Jesus has expressed His desire for his believing people. This is God’s desire for his believing people inside the family.

In this prayer of Christ’s, God has expressed his desire for the unity of his believing people. But there is an unwearied conflict kept up on this earth. Satan works to make the prayer of Christ of none effect. {RH, April 27, 1897 par. 2}

That is what Satan is trying to do. He is working to do this. Do we know he is working and are we conscious of it and where our dangers lie? We must not underestimate the work of Satan nor our own hearts and brains we need to hang so solidly on God’s word.

Satan works to make the prayer of Christ of non-effect.
He makes a continual effort to create bitterness and discord; for he knows that where there is unity, there is strength,–a oneness which all the powers of hell cannot break. {RH, April 27, 1897 par. 2}

He knows the unity of Christ is the only ingredient that he cannot overcome.

All who bring weakness and sorrow and discouragement upon God’s people, by their own perverse ways and tempers, aid the enemy of God, and are working directly against the prayer of Christ. {RH, April 27, 1897 par. 2}

We have emotions inside of us in regard to social activity that makes us get a temper, upset, discouraged or sorrowful and all these expressions we make toward one another is aiding Satan and working directly against the prayer of Christ. Notice this quote. You notice this is not ecumenical. This is within the body of believers. People say we need to lower the standard to get ecumenical but this is not what it is talking about. It is those who believe the same on the principles of faith but bicker and fight inside.

In union there is strength; in disunion there is weakness. God’s chosen ones are to reveal to the world their union one with another. It is NOT POSSIBLE for a few to walk to heaven alone because they can agree with no others. God’s people are to be a unit. {RH, April 27, 1897 par. 4}

It is not possible for a few to walk to heaven alone because they can agree with no others. God’s people are to be a unit. Never misunderstand what we are talking about. We are not talking about laying down principles of truth so we can hug everybody we are talking about my personal opinions by personal tastes and thoughts to not allow them to get in the way of unity. Looking to Jesus is the only way to accomplish this. If we are looking at our brethren in the wrong light what has happened? The serpent has bitten us. Our state of consciousness the way we view things is wrong. Satan is trying to put his insinuations into us and to inject his pride in us so we think we know and they don’t. This activity is in the framework of believers and those thoughts unconsciously put us higher than everyone else. It is a deception. How we view people is the deception. If we look to Jesus will we live? I really admire the character of Jesus. I love it because it is perfectly balanced and as we look to him and gaze upon him he will correct our view of life.

Jesus is speaking to Nicodemus

John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

When we look to Jesus we don’t look to him for an emotional story. It is looking to him to correct substance abuse or from living a religious life that is void of action and looking to Jesus to also correct the deception that I am better than my brethren. The remedy neutralizes the poison so we can see as he sees. God is an absolute our only safety is found in.

John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

12:32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all [men] unto me.

What draws all men unto me? Christ being uplifted draws people. There is a display in the character of Jesus that does draw everyone. Not everyone will continue to be drawn by it. How do you think we can have unity? Jesus Christ should be the source that draws us together. What does it mean to lift up Jesus?

Christ carried out in His life His own divine teachings. {ST, September 23, 1908 par. 7}

Christ is the embodiment of his doctrines. He is the action and life of those teachings.

He was absorbed in the work He came to perform; His devotion to the work of saving the lost was manifest on all occasions. {ST, September 23, 1908 par. 7}

Did he have a public life separate from his private life?

While He rebuked sin with severity, He ever showed tender love for the sinner. In Him were blended the wisdom of the serpent and the harmlessness of the dove. His zeal never led Him to become passionate. He manifested consistency without obstinacy. {ST, September 23, 1908 par. 7}

Some people are consistent because they do not and will not change. That is not consistency it is obstinacy. Jesus was not like that.

… benevolence without weakness, tenderness and sympathy without sentimentalism. He was highly social, yet He possessed a reserved dignity that did not encourage undue familiarity. His temperance never led to bigotry or austerity. He was not conformed to this world, yet He was not indifferent to the wants of the least among men. {ST, September 23, 1908 par. 7}

Can you see the beautiful character of Jesus? This is what I want to be like. So firm to principle but very kind to other people and very social but only know Christ and him crucified and be consistent but not obstinate. I want to be very temperate in my life but I don’t want to become a bigot or austere. Have you met austere people? Locked jaw is it must be this way or else. I don’t want to be like that. I just want to be like Jesus such a character is charming. That perfect balance of being right and being kind people admire. Some people like to be kind but they don’t like the right so when they see Jesus they are drawn to that side of him. The other person is draw to the other side of him. All men are drawn to Jesus because of his perfectly balanced character and when we uplift such a character and look and dwell upon that perfect balance it is sanctification. Not the sanctification of being right and everyone has to be like me and have no toleration at all nor being weak and letting everything happen. This is the source of unity. This is the source of all seeing things the same. I do not have to see like you or you have to see like me we all have to see like Jesus. If I have the opinion that people must achieve me then I will have to go around the world and reveal myself to everyone so they can be saved but if it is Jesus he is accessible to everyone via the Holy Ghost so there can be people in other counties who will develop the same and when they meet will they fight? Of course not.

Is Christ divided?–No. Christ abiding in the soul will not quarrel with Christ in another soul. We must learn to bear with the peculiarities of those around us. If our will is under the control of Christ’s will, how can we be at variance with our brethren? If we are at variance, we may know that it is because self needs to be crucified. He whom Christ makes free is free indeed. We are not complete in Christ unless we love one another as Christ has loved us. When we do this, as Christ has given us commandment, we shall give evidence that we are complete in Him. {TDG 262.5}

We need to ask the Lord to show us if we are deceived. This doesn’t mean we must not be particular in our life. People often take it the wrong way. We are to become very particular but our vision toward others will change we will become just like him. Then our fellowship together in our own congregation will be a testimony to the world of pure love as well as a high standard.

God is the embodiment of benevolence, mercy, and love. Those who are truly connected with Him cannot be at variance with one another. His Spirit ruling in the heart will create harmony, love, and unity. The opposite of this is seen among the children of Satan. It is his work to stir up envy, strife, and jealousy. In the name of my Master I ask the professed followers of Christ, What fruit do you bear? {CT 90.3}

My brethren, let us put all that aside. We have no right to keep our minds stayed on ourselves, our preferences, and our fancies. We are not to seek to maintain a peculiar identity of our own, a personality, an individuality, which will separate us from our fellow laborers. {SpTB04 22.5}

We are to have our individuality, but the character traits that cause divisions must be put away.

We have a character to maintain, but it is the character of Christ. Having the character of Christ, we can carry on the work of God together. The Christ in us will meet the Christ in our brethren, [If we each have Christ in us we will get along and the work will go forward] and the Holy Spirit will give that union of heart and action, which testifies to the world that we are children of God. May the Lord help us to die to self, and be born again, that Christ may live in us, a living, active principle, a power that will keep us holy. {SpTB04 22.5}
