Dress Reform and Physiology

By Dwayne Lemon, Audio: mp3

There are many different things that we talk about when it comes to health but there is one area that a lot of times we don’t consider yet it is one of the areas that science is confirming that the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy showed us a long time ago that would affect our health and that is the subject of dress.

In many respects allot of individuals are not aware that our dress can actually affect our health. What we would like to do is take a few moments so we can study the subject out and to see it from the Word of God.

Allot of time when we study the subject of health and the principles of dress, in many respects we don’t look at it at all and there is a tremendous emphasis on the writings of Ellen White and the Spirit of Prophecy. I hope that Seventh Day Adventists don’t have a problem with the Spirit of Prophecy manifested through Ellen White. That is my first hope that there is not a problem with that. If you are a Seventh Day Adventist Christian then be who you are as we know that God has given a prophet for these last days.

We will also find that many of the things that Sr White was able to find out, she found from the scriptures. She was a diligent searcher of the word of God and as a result of that she was able to pull out principles of the Bible and magnify them and make them plain in the testimonies that we have today. God wants us to pay much attention to this subject and as you go through the scriptures you will understand why.

God and His Character

The Bible makes very clear a statement about God and his character.

1 John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Every manifestation and everything that extends from God comes as a manifestation of God’s love. He is love. God cannot be anything else. Whatever it is that God says, whatever it is that God does, God does it under the premise of love. Do you believe that God is love?

Matthew 19:16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? [there is] none good but one, [that is], God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

In addition to the fact that 1 John tells us that God is love, we also find God is also good. We are building a foundation. We find another principle in James.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

The reason why I’m setting this foundation is because sometimes when we begin to receive instruction from God many a times we begin to feel a bit challenged because some of the instruction that God will give from the Bible is very much in line with our ideologies and our way of thinking and are easy to say amen to. But sometimes you find things that come from the Bible the Word of God will be a counsel that God is going to give to his people and it is going to be a counsel of love. It is going to be something that is good because every good and perfect gift comes from above from the Father of light so there will be times when God is going to reveal things to us in essence is good but it may challenge our lifestyle. It might challenge certain practises in our life. It might challenge the way we think, the way we act and even the way we dress. What we have to make sure is that we understand if it’s coming from God at the end of the day, it is good and beneficial to his people.

3 John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

God makes it very clear I love you. That is why he starts the text saying beloved. He is letting you know that you are loved of heaven and throughout all creation. His highest desire is that we excel. God says my desire for you above all things is that you prosper and be in health. I was doing a study and I thought what does he mean even as? That term even as means just as. God is saying the type of excelling that I want you to have in the spiritual sphere, I also want you to have in the sphere of health. One of the best ways we can really understand how much good health wants us to have is to understand is to understand how much God wants to excel spiritually, he wants the same for our health. God wants us to grow spirituality and to have the same experience in our health.

Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Christ comes to us and he says I expect perfection of character. Jesus is the only human being who could have walked on this earth who could have made such a command because he was able also to live by that example. Christ wants us to have victory over sin and you can. We must have this experience before Jesus comes. Whether you understand it or not the sanctuary is the foundation of the SDA church. The sanctuary message teaches us that forgiveness of sins is available to us but in the holy place Jesus can cover our sins with his blood. That is when the high priest sprinkled the blood on the veil. But in the most holy place in 1844 Christ left the holy place and went into the most holy to do the final work which is not to forgive or cover your sins only but is to blot out your sins which means you have total complete victory over sin. This is the work that Jesus wants to accomplish in you and me since 1844 and there are practical ways that we can cooperate with Christ to do this work. When Jesus says I expect perfection of character, victory over sin, Christ means it. Why? Because Jesus says if I’m going to be your source of strength to accomplish it then Paul was right when he said;

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Matthew 5:48 relates to spiritual prosperity as God expects perfection of his people. God says I expect them to overcome a tongue that speaks profanity. God says I expect them to have victory over foul, wicked and lustful thoughts and I expect them to overcome every wrong action because the power of my holy spirit is available to each and every one of them. The more we understand what God expects from a spiritual stand point, we can understand what he expects from us in regards to health.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and [I pray God] your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Can you imagine that God has an expectation not just from your mind set, not just from your attitude and your concepts of thinking, but God actually says I expect even in your body to find you blameless. We are talking about a high order and emphasis that God gives on health. We find that as it relates to spiritual prosperity, Christs says perfection and that he wants us to be found blameless.

Revelation 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

3 John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

God actually expects perfection. God actually expects blamelessness. God actually expects overcoming. Take those three principles and let us look at our health as he says I want your health to reflect your spiritual growth. How many of us have perfect health? Is it possible to have perfect health? Sin has messed up our minds so much that we have literally become comfortable with sickness and disease. I remember talking to a young lady and she had anaemia and she said Brother Lemon I have had anaemia for so long that I don’t even know if I want to overcome it as my life has become so adjusted to it. You are talking about the plague of sin that the devil can get us to a point that we would become content with sickness and disease. Disease was never part of God’s plan but here it is today and many of us are suffering and when perfect health comes into the picture some say, oh I don’t need that just because I have a little bit of arthritis, arterial plaque and issues with my blood and the list goes on, I’m still doing alright. We have become content. We have settled so much in our reality that we no longer look at Gods ideal. I’m so thankful that God is such a God, that though he has such a high ideal, he meets us in our reality. Never make the detrimental mistake that God meets us in our reality to keep us in our reality. That is not the gospel. There is another gospel and the Bible says who preaches it must be accursed.

Galatians 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

1:7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

God wants to meet us in our reality but to bring us up to his high ideal. He wants our health to be perfect and blameless. My topic today is not so much eating and drinking to the glory today. My topic is dealing with specifically with an item most neglected in the field of health not normally taught. Is there a message of dress in the Bible?

Genesis 2:23 And Adam said, This [is] now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

2:25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

There are two individuals both naked but they weren’t ashamed but something happened. Eve was talking to the serpent and gets her to partake of the fruit. Eve gets ready to take the fruit.

Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree [was] good for food, and that it [was] pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make [one] wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they [were] naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

A whole sermon could be preached just on that verse. Not even one, but many sermons. This is the foundation of self-righteousness right there in the garden of Eden. They became naked, they realised they were naked and they ended up sewing fig leaves.

Genesis 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I [was] naked; and I hid myself.

In Genesis 2:25 it said Adam and Eve were naked and not ashamed and then in Genesis 3 it says they are naked and ashamed. What happened? What caused the difference? One minute they were naked and not ashamed and now they are naked and ashamed. What happened? Yes sin but make it clearer. What really happened? They obviously lost something. What did they lose? Their innocence. Do you believe that Adam and Eve were made in the image of God?

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

They also had the mind of God. if Adam and Eve looked like God, then if we want to find out what they lost, find out what God had because whatever God had, they had as they were made in the image of God.

Psalm 104:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.

104:2 Who coverest [thyself] with light as [with] a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

A garment that covers himself with the Bible calls light which means when Adam and Eve were made they were covered with what? What is this light?

John 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

Who is talking here? Is Jesus that light? What was it that Adam and Eve had about Jesus that was covering them?

Micah 7:9 I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, [and] I shall behold his righteousness.

Therefore the light of God is his righteousness which means that in the beginning Adam and Eve in Genesis were naked and not ashamed because no child of God sinner though they maybe, when they are covered with the righteousness of Jesus Christ does not have to be ashamed of their nakedness. Adam and Eve were not ashamed as they were covered in the righteousness of Christ but when we sin against God, we can forfeit the covering of Christ’s righteousness. Therefore what did they do? They made their own righteousness, aprons. They lost the righteousness of God and immediately they tried to replace it with self-righteousness. We do that so often. Notice how God did something.

Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

In the beginning everything was beautiful. God was face to face with his creation. He was able to talk to mankind face to face with his creation. He didn’t use the burning bush, books or medium preachers. God was able to come to mankind face to face. Communion. Sin comes into the picture and separates man from God. God I’m sure with tears in his eyes tells Adam and Eve you must leave the garden, you can’t stay here anymore. As he looks at that apron and sees how insufficient a covering that apron was, God says there will be changes in this world and if you are going to make it through that apron won’t do so he provides another covering and he made a coat. When God made coats back in the days, they were not coats how we wear them today. We have three quarter clothes, that is new fashion. The coats from the top to the bottom. It was a full covering. Why did God do that?

The atmosphere, once so mild and uniform in temperature, was now subject to marked changes, and the Lord mercifully provided them with a garment of skins as a protection from the extremes of heat and cold. {PP 61.5}

We are talking about a loving saviour. He saw that before sin the temperature was 75 all the time. The atmosphere was always sunny and the breeze was never too strong or soft. Everything was perfect but when sin came into the picture, all of a sudden this cold weather would come in and this blazing hot weather would come in and God looked at the apron which was sleeveless and God saw that he apron was insufficient. Another thing about aprons is that they don’t have a back. Aprons only go to the knees also. God told them to take it off and put on my coat as God says I want to protect you from the extremes of heat and cold.

The atmosphere was changed. It was no longer unvarying as before the transgression. God clothed them with coats of skins to protect them from the sense of chilliness and then of heat to which they were exposed. {SR 46.1}

This is what God did when God made man the coats outside what it meant spiritually, he did it also for their health. God understood, if you are not clad properly it is going to create some problems. God is love, God is good and every good and perfect gift comes from above the Father of lights. In love he gave these coats to mankind to protect him. A lot about women is addressed in regards to dress but it doesn’t leave out the men. The devil uses dress to attack the sisters. If the devil can get the sisters he can usually get the men as well. The devil is in the principle of two for the price of one. Ladies, don’t feel like there is a vendetta against you but the enemy has chosen you for but God in love says there is a way you can protect yourself.

Every article of dress should fit easily, obstructing neither the circulation of the blood nor a free, full, natural respiration. Everything worn should be so loose that when the arms are raised the clothing will be correspondingly lifted. {MH 293.3}

One of the things obstructing our health, is clothing worn fitting too tight on the body and obstructing good circulation. Does that include articles we can’t see? Men you can take note of that. There are some garments of dress that even men wear that hugs too strongly against certain parts of the body designed to hurt not help us. If we are wearing our belts, some take a fanatical position and don’t wear belts but suspenders. That is not biblical or sound in the spirit of prophecy. God counsels us when we wear something around our waist, we should make sure it is not so tight so when we remove it there is no heavy imprint around our waist. We should ensure we can move freely and the shirt can come out of the pants freely. It should not hug around the body so hard it obstructs circulation.

Another evil which custom fosters is the unequal distribution of the clothing, so that while some parts of the body have more than is required, others are insufficiently clad. The feet and limbs, being remote from the vital organs, should be especially guarded from cold by abundant clothing. It is impossible to have health when the extremities are habitually cold; for if there is too little blood in them there will be too much in other portions of the body. Perfect health requires a perfect circulation; but this cannot be had while three or four times as much clothing is worn upon the body, where the vital organs are situated, as upon the feet and limbs. {MH 293.1}

If you believe the testimony of Jesus then take this as your saviour talking to you. God is impossible to have good health when the extremities are habitually cold. If we wear things too tightly around the body you will see it will hinder that perfect circulation and as a result of that we suffer. I have four children and when I discovered this my eyes were really opened and the Lord showed me some amazing things.

Special attention should be given to the extremities, that they may be as thoroughly clothed as the chest and the region over the heart, where is the greatest amount of heat. {CG 426.2}

When we wear sleeveless, short clothing and short pants, your bodies are not evenly clad. Ladies, typically when you wear skirts and the skirt stops at the knees the legs are exposed. If you suffer any of these things, God is trying to say the cure is in the cause. If you find the cause for nightly nose bleeds, the cure is right there.

Parents who dress their children with the extremities naked, or nearly so, are sacrificing the health and lives of their children to fashion. If these parts are not so warm as the body, the circulation is not equalized. When the extremities, which are remote from the vital organs, are not properly clad, the blood is driven to the head, causing headache or nosebleed; or there is a sense of fullness about the chest, producing cough or palpitation of the heart, on account of too much blood in that locality; or the stomach has too much blood, causing indigestion. {CG 426.2}

God is saying while we are popping pills and going to the doctor, God is saying if you would equal out the distribution of clothing, could it be those headaches would go away. Can you imagine indigestion, palpitation of the heart, coughing, nose bleeds and headaches are all attributed to not covering the body equally, equal distribution of clothing. God is saying, yes your dress affects your health and I love you too much and in the garden of Eden I tried to leave an example for my people but it flew over their heads so now today the majority of individuals who name the name of Seventh Day Adventists, unfortunately we don’t know how to dress anymore. We follow the fashions of the world

Another great cause of mortality among infants and youth, is the custom of leaving their arms and shoulders naked. This fashion cannot be too severely censured. It has cost the life of thousands. The air, bathing the arms and limbs, and circulating about the armpits, chills these sensitive portions of the body, so near the vitals, and hinders the healthy circulation of the blood, and induces disease, especially of the lungs and brain. {2SM 467.1}

Here is a list of diseases that Gods people are suffering from for not dress properly;

  • Shortness of breath
  • Headaches
  • Nose bleed
  • Fullness about the chest producing palpitations about the heart
  • Irritation of restlessness
  • Nerves and veins become contracted
  • Bad circulation that produces disease
  • Double labour upon the heart
  • Weakened heart
  • Inflammation and congestion of the lunges and brain
  • Constant cold
  • Catarrh
  • Swellings on the face and neck
  • Cancer
  • Miscarriages
  • Premature death

All of these can take place of not knowing how to dress ourselves. Paul asked an amazing question;

1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

We are the commandment keeping people, we are telling the world remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy but when in the name of fashion we dress ourselves in such a way that it brings death and disease while we are keeping the fourth commandment, we could be breaking the sixth commandment thou shalt not kill. While professing to keep the fourth commandment we could be breaking the eighth commandment thou shalt no steal. If our bodies have been bought and are not ours and if we take it and dress and do what we want, when I last checked, when you take something that doesn’t belong to you that is called stealing. Christ is in the sanctuary above in the most holy place doing the work of judgement and the judgement point he is using is his holy law. Let us not think that while we come to church Sabbath after Sabbath, that is not enough, we are to examine ourselves and look at all of Gods commandments and ask if my life in line with it? Dress is not a trivial matter. Our dress affects our health, our dress affects our spirituality. By God’s grace let’s give due attention to this as we are preparing to meet our God.

Amen.
