The Gift of the Spirit – Speaking in Tongues
This is a very controversial topic in today’s society. There is the Pentecostal view of the gift of the Spirit which is manifested in the speaking of tongues. The other view is of not speaking in tongues but the gift of the spirit through overcoming and sanctification by the Spirit. Also that speaking in tongues is the ability to speak in the different languages of earth. What does the bible have to say about the gift of the Spirit? What does the Spirit does for each one of us? Jesus speaks about the coming of the Holy Spirit.
John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Jesus is talking about the Spirit which was manifested at Pentecost which was to abide in us. This Spirit which is to abide in the Christian cannot abide in a person of the world.
Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
The promise is, I’m going to give you a new spirit. It’s different to the old spirit. It will be in you. That spirit is His Spirit, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will cause us to be obedient to the commandments of God.
Ephesians 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Jesus says the Holy Spirit will be in you and when the Holy Spirit is in you, you will have a new heart. You’ll be a new man; putting on the new man which is the spirit of your mind. That will create in you the ability to obey Jesus Christ. What does the bible says about the old spirit? Each one of us has had an old spirit in us.
Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
There are two spirits. One is the spirit of God, the new spirit to renew the spirit of the mind. A new heart. As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. The old spirit works in the children of disobedience. It excuses the transgression of the law and says we don’t have to keep it. It works on the fulfilling of the desires of the flesh and of the mind. The flesh is worked by the old spirit. The spirit that God promises to give us to make us obedient Christians is the spirit of the mind. These are two distinct and different things.
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
See the difference? The spirit and the flesh. One works in us the passions and emotions of the flesh which cause us to sin. The other works in the mind. These are total opposites. There is nothing similar about them at all.
Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
The spirit causes us to be obedient to the law. Therefore, we are not under the penalty of the law anymore. These two spirits are contrary to each other; absolutely opposed. One works on the mind, the other on the flesh. What is the work of the Spirit? It is to control the flesh.
Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
If we have the spirit that works upon the flesh, can we please God? It is the spirit that God gave? Absolutely not.
Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
If we don’t have that spirit that exercises our mind, then we’re not Christians. If we have the spirit that works on the flesh, then we’re not of Christ because the Spirit of God dwells in the Christian, in the mind. There are a couple of things that the Holy Spirit exercises in the Christian when it comes. When Pentecost came, what happened? They spoke in other languages; in tongues.
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
When the Holy Spirit comes, it will exercise the language part of your brain, because the Holy Spirit works on the mind.
Ephesians 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
The inner man, the person who you are. The Holy Spirit is to strengthen your character and personality so you can stand before the world as a Christian, to strengthen the mind. When you do exercise to strengthen your muscles, where does all the blood go? Into the muscle that is being exercised. For us to be strengthened, we need more activity in our frontal lobe in our mind more than anywhere else if we have the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will strengthen the language part of your brain and your personality, who you are, the inner man.
Ezekiel 2:1 And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee.
2:2 And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake unto me.
When the Spirit came into the prophet, he stood up on his feet. The Holy Spirit strengthens the language part of the brain, your personality and also causes you to stand upright. It strengthens your motor skills. Research has been done on people speaking in tongues, using brain scans.
“The passionate, sometimes rhythmic, language-like patter that pours forth from religious people who “speak in tongues” reflects a state of mental possession, many of them say. Now they have some neuroscience to back them up. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania took brain images of five women while they spoke in tongues and found that their frontal lobes — the thinking, willful part of the brain through which people control what they do — were relatively quiet, as were the language centers. The regions involved in maintaining self-consciousness were active. The women were not in blind trances, and it was unclear which region was driving the behavior.”
Neuroscientists looked at the brain of people speaking in modern day tongues and found that the frontal lobe, your personality, your inner man, was quiet as was the language part of your brain. They couldn’t find which part of the brain was creating the behaviour. They couldn’t see it on the scan.
“The new findings contrasted sharply with images taken of other spiritually inspired mental states like meditation, which is often a highly focused mental exercise, activating the frontal lobes. The scans also showed a dip in the activity of a region called the left caudate. “The findings from the frontal lobes are very clear, and make sense, but the caudate is usually active when you have positive affect, pleasure, positive emotions,” said Dr. James A. Coan, a psychologist at the University of Virginia. “So it’s not so clear what that finding says” about speaking in tongues. The caudate area is also involved in motor and emotional control, Dr. Newberg said, so it may be that practitioners, while mindful of their circumstances, nonetheless cede some control over their bodies and emotions.”
The motor centre of the brain is also quiet when people were “filled with the holy spirit” as they say. Something is happening in the mind of the Pentecostal world that quiets the frontal lobe, stops the language part of the brain and stops the controls of the motor skills. Here is the image of the brain scans.
In the left picture the circle at the front of the brain shows three red hot spots. This indicates activity of blood at the frontal lobe. For someone speaking in tongues in the right picture, the same area has less blood. When the Holy Spirit strengthens the inner man, what do you expect to happen in the personality part of your brain? More blood. More blood needs to be active to strengthen those neuro-pathways to establish your character, habits and who you are. The left caudate, the language part of the brain, is less active when speaking in tongues compared to someone who is singing a gospel song. It drops away to be nothing.
The Holy Spirit is to strengthen our mind and not the flesh. They are contrary to one another. Our motor and language skills should be improved. Our personality should be improved. When you look at people speaking in tongues, their motor and language skills are going all over the place. They roll all over the ground and carry on. People claim that this is the Holy Ghost, but it’s not the Holy Ghost of the bible. It is the spirit that works in the children of disobedience.
Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Satan is taking the form of an angel of light and inspiring people in satanic manifestations of so-called Christianity. They call it proper Christianity. They teach that the Holy Spirit does not communicate to our heads. Where he speaks, where he enlightens and where he illuminates is in our spirit. That is contrary to what the bible says the Holy Spirit will do. As we pray for the Holy Spirit, let us allow him to fill our minds and our characters to be obedient to all ten of the laws of God.
