Don’t Be Afraid of the Giants

Nature obeys God and his command.  His word is where his power is. When we read of creation we are not merely reading of God doing something. When we read of creation we are reading of God’s power. When we are reading of Gods power, what are we reading of? What is the power of God? The power of God is the gospel. When we study creation we are studying the gospel. The heathen know the gospel as it has been preached to them through creation and in the things of nature around them. When we read of God creating, we are reading of the gospel. The gospel is the power of God unto salvation so the gospel is what? Recreation.

Recreation

That is what the power of God is – to create and to recreate.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Darkness came? No. He said let there be light and there was light. There was nothing other than that which he said there to be.

Genesis 1:6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which [were] under the firmament from the waters which [were] above the firmament: and it was so.

Nothing else was so except that for which he had spoken. Creation goes on. God said and it was so. It was by God’s word that things came into existence, things that were not.

Psalms 33:4 For the word of the LORD [is] right; and all his works [are done] in truth.

God can’t lie. That which he says is so.

Psalms 33:5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD. 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. 33:9 For he spake, and it was [done]; he commanded, and it stood fast.

The Gospel in Creation

Here is a summary of the gospel in creation, the power of God unto salvation.

Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

God’s word produces exactly what it has said. Nothing more, nothing less.

Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper [in the thing] whereto I sent it.

The very thing that God has spoken will fulfil. The word itself is a self-fulfilling word. Contained in the word is the fulness of God and God is omnipotent, eternal, all righteousness and it is all in his word. By faith we realise and understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God. God said and it was so. God said let there be light and where there was no light, there was light. Where there was no fish, there were fish. Where there was no man, there was man. How enduring is God’s word? This word that not only frames things, but this word does what?

1 Peter 1:24 For all flesh [is] as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: 25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

The word of God endures forever. It is an eternal word. It is an enduring word. It will keep at it until it produces what it needs to produce. Recall God had said 70 days of captivity in Babylon or 70 years. As that time came, recall Gabriel where he had to work three weeks with the king to bring about the release of the Hebrews. There was a resistance of the word of God but God had said so it had to come to pass.

Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by [his] Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

This is the inheritor of all things and yet what does he inherit? Everything that he created. He is the inheritor of everything he made. He upholds all things by the word of his power. What upholds all things? His word. What keeps the sky up there? His word. What keeps those tree limbs from falling on your car? His word. What keeps the clouds up there and the water running in the continual cycle of life? His word. His word upholds all things including you and me. That word endures forever.

Abraham

Genesis 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Abraham believed in the Lord. He believed what God had said to him. He believed the word. The word that he would have seed as many as the stars. This covenant was tied in with previous covenants of him saying I will give you an inheritance. That inheritance was an inheritance of eternal life. Abraham believed God that he would give him eternal life. He believed that God would forgive his sins and raise him up from the dead and give him an eternal inheritance. Because he believed him, it was counted to him as righteousness. this word which is self fulfilling, this word that will not return to him void has now been spoken to you and me just as it was spoken to Abraham of old.

Romans 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God [which is] by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth [to be] a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, [I say], at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Abraham believed God and it was counted to him for righteousness. Do you believe it? Do you believe that God has set Jesus Christ to be propitiation and that your sins have been remitted? If you believe that, at this time you are righteous. That is the word of God. He has declared to you personally righteousness if you will believe you will be counted as righteous. Don’t you want to believe it?

God Has Put Our Sins Behind His Back

Isaiah 38:17 Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul [delivered it] from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.

Do you believe that? God says to you, I have taken your sins and put them behind my back. Do you believe it? If you believe it, where are your sins? They are behind his back. Can he see them? He can’t see them. Can anyone get to them? They have to get through God first and he is on his throne of power. Believe it. Your sins have been cast behind his back and in order for someone to get those sins back to you they have to get God of his throne first. Believe it.

Jeremiah 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day [that] I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33 But this [shall be] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

The Word of God says I do not remember your sins. If you get a prompting of your sins that you know that you have repented of, you know it’s the devil. Satan will only remind you of the sins you have repented of because if he reminds you of the ones you have not repented of then you are going to go and repent of them.  God’s word says righteousness where unrighteousness was. All that have sinned come short of the glory of God. God said let there be light and there was light. God said let there be righteousness and right there is righteousness. Why are we afraid to come before God?

Why did man run from him in the Garden of Eden? He says come just as you are.  Have you seen it? Come to him. He declares righteousness, believe it.  The Israelites were told here is an immortal inheritance. Here is forgiveness of your sins. Here is a land where only the righteous can dwell as they were to expel all the wicked. He wanted to give them a land of righteousness. Gods promised that I will give you righteousness so you can dwell in this land of righteous. But they said no I don’t believe you can. My sins are too gigantic.

The Spies Report

Remember the spies report? The giants are too big and the cities are too fortified. I can’t see my way through different circumstances. You can’t do it God, you can’t fulfil your word You don’t fulfil your word – that is what they said. At Sinai he said if you believe, you will not have another God before me. I will work it in you to not lie, cheat or steal. But they said no you can’t. We can do it and all that you say we can do it. It was not counted to them for righteousness and they died in the wilderness of sin when God had declared righteousness. Will we die in the wilderness of sin drinking of the wine and bread as they did?

Hebrews 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left [us] of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard [it].

Faith is belief of God’s word that can produce what you can’t see.  The gospel of righteousness by faith was preached unto them but they said we can’t see it.  How often do we find ourselves transgressing Gods law and all we see are our sins but God sees our righteousness.  May God grant us his eyes that even though we have failed that the righteousness of Christ covers it and we are counted righteous if we will be believe it.  Let us fear lest we won’t enter into this rest of beautiful peace of mind.

When We Make Mistakes

I have made a mistake, and I repent. God says ok its behind my back so get up and keep going. God’s word upholds things and it upholds you.  If God was to go back on his word or if Gods word was to fail and he declares you as righteous and you are not really righteous, what would that mean? God upholds all things by the word of his power. If Gods word does not fulfil itself to you no matter how believing you are, the sky will fall down as Gods word has failed.  Not only will the sky fall down but the trees will fall on your car but who cares because the sky will crash those trees anywhere.

The moon will go too fast and there will be chaos in the universe ‘because it s God word that upholds all things and if his words fail then all things fail. Is God’s word going to fail in upholding the sky?  Will it fail in holding the planets in their rotations?  No Gods word endures forever.  So when God comes to you and says righteousness I forgive you, I do not remember it is truth.  The scripture says they will not be mentioned to you anymore.  If they are mentioned to you if it’s not God as his word endures forever. Don’t doubt God and if you do not doubt him, it will endure forever in your life. It is easier for the sky to fall down than for him to not forgive. If God declares you to be righteous and you are then the sky will not fall down.  Comprehend the simplicity of Gods world.

Were you ever uneasy any time in your life, when you arose in the morning with the sun, for fear that the sun would drop out of place before noon or before sundown? Oh, no. Were you ever uneasy when you arose with the sun for fear that you yourself as a Christian would slip out of place before sundown? You know you have been. Why were you not as uneasy as to whether the sun would drop out of place before sundown, fearing that that might slip out of place and fall as you were that you yourself would fall? Oh, of course no one ever thinks of any such anxious question as to why the sun does not fall. It is always there and will stay there. {February 18, 1895 ATJ, GCB 218.8}

We don’t worry about the sun falling out of the sky or the sky falling out of the sky instead we are always worried I will make a little slip.

But it is perfectly fair for the Christian to ask, why is it that the sun does not slip out of his place? And the answer is, The “powerful word” of Jesus Christ holds the sun there and causes him to go on in his course. And that same power is to hold up the believer in Jesus. That same word is to hold up the believer in Jesus and the believer in Jesus is to expect it to do so, just as certainly as it holds up the sun or the moon. That same powerful word is to hold up the Christian in the Christian’s course, precisely the same as it holds the sun in his course. The Christian who will put his confidence upon that word that is to hold him up, as he puts his confidence in that word that holds up the sun will find that that word will hold him up as it holds up the sun. {February 18, 1895 ATJ, GCB 218.9}

This is simplicity.  We need a childlike faith that will only believe.

If you think of this scripture tomorrow morning when you arise, you will think that God is holding up the sun. You will not wonder at it either; you will expect him to do that and will not be watching uneasily to see whether the sun will slip out of its place. No. You will simply go about your work with your mind upon the work and leave the holding up of the sun altogether to God, to whom it belongs. Also tomorrow morning when you arise with the sun, just expect that same powerful word to hold you up as it does the sun. Leave this part to God too, and go about your work with all your might and put all your mind upon your work. Let God attend to that which belongs to Him, and give your mind to that which He has given you to do. And thus serve God “with all the mind.” We cannot keep ourselves from falling. We cannot hold ourselves up. And He has not given us that task to do. {February 18, 1895 ATJ, GCB 218.10}

God is Not Interested in Our Law Keeping

Has God asked you to keep the sun up the sky?  No you can’t.  Has God said you have to obey me?  No he hasn’t.  He said come unto me and yoke up with me as you can’t obey without me.  As you don’t have to preoccupy your mind in keeping the sun up in the sky don’t preoccupy your mind with doing things right.  How often we preoccupy yourselves with trying to do things right?  The law of God is an expression of his character.  When the law of God says this is what I demand, it demands nothing short of his character.  It demands nothing short of his righteousness, his obedience. Don’t try to be obedient yourself.  The law of God doesn’t want it.  It is not interested in your law keeping.  It wants his keeping and his word fulfilled in your life.

This is not contradicting the text that says, “Let Him that thinketh He standeth take heed lest He fall” because in this way the man is relying upon God to hold him up and does not depend upon his own efforts. And he who constantly bears in mind that God is holding him up and that he must be held up is not going to be boasting of his ability to stand. If I had to be carried in here this evening, perfectly helpless and two or three of the brethren should have to stand here and hold me up, it would not be very becoming in me to say, “See how I can stand.” I would not be standing. I could not stand. Just the moment they should release their hold, I would fall.  {February 18, 1895 ATJ, GCB 218.11}

Why do we fall through the day?  When we stop believing.  We see the giants and strong holds and we say God is not leading. Don’t doubt him.

It is precisely so with the Christian. The word of God says of the Christian, “To his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up; for God is able to make him stand.” Rom. 14:4. And the man whom God is holding up, who is trusting in God to hold him up, and knows that it is God alone who is making him stand–it is impossible for that man to begin to say, “I am standing now, and therefore there is no danger of my falling.” Is there any danger of a man’s falling while God holds him up? Of course not. It is only when he takes himself out of the Lord’s hand and begins to try to hold himself up and then boasts that he can stand, it is then that there is not only danger but the thing is done. He has already fallen. He takes himself out of God’s hand and he is bound to fall. {February 18, 1895 ATJ, GCB 219.1}

God’s word means what it says.  God says I have forgiven you, believe it.  No matter what anyone tells you, he has forgiven you.  He says I don’t remember them anymore, believe it.  If God says I will help you in work and responsibilities in the church, whether people are puffing at you and getting annoyed at you, he will keep you from that. He will keep you from the snares that the world passes around.  Whatever this world says, God will fulfil his word.  Do not be afraid but to only believe.

Amen.
