The Christian’s Privilege of an Advocate Part 2

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

It is a Christian’s privilege to have an advocate. The scripture is written to the little children and if any man big or little sin we have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ the righteous. This privilege belongs to Christians.

Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

The privileges that belong to a Christian come freely with Jesus Christ. Anyone who isn’t a Christian has not received Jesus Christ;

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:

If we decide not to receive Jesus then we are not his children by redemption and don’t have an advocate with the Father.

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Here has been provision made for His children that sin, a privilege for His children when they fall into temptation. Why should someone who sins have a privilege?

1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

1 John 3:12 Not as Cain, [who] was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

There are two types of children. One is of the wicked one and the other a child of God.

The Children of the Devil and the Children of God

The advocate is for the children of God. Why should one child receive an advocate and not another yet both have obviously sinned as the text does say if any man sin we have an advocate? Any of the children. Are there two types of sin or is all sin unto death?

1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. 16 If any man see his brother sin a sin [which is] not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. 17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

It is important for us to note that in this scripture there is a sin unto death and there is a sin not unto death. In verse 16 it speaks clearly that if any man sees his brother sin a sin [which is] not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. Here is a brother that will ask the father to give life to a brother that has sinned not unto death. This is what Jesus has done as our advocate, our older brother as he has asked God.

All Unrighteousness Is Sin

1 John 3:12 Not as Cain, [who] was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

Here are two positions. Abel was righteous. He was a child of God and not as Cain that wicked one. Where do we fall in this category where do we come in when we transgress? Do we have an advocate with the Father through Jesus Christ the righteous or do we not? If it is important we strengthen our faith in these last days and see what heaven as in store for us. As we see what heaven has in store for us to use, we should make advantageous strides towards the victory to overcoming sin. But if we should not consider our own position, then it is not of faith and we can’t make advantageous strides towards the victory.

Cain and Abel – Two Brothers

One is of the wicked one and one is not. There are two types of sin.

Numbers 5:5 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 6 Speak unto the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the LORD, and that person be guilty; 7 Then they shall confess their sin which they have done: and he shall recompense his trespass with the principal thereof, and add unto it the fifth [part] thereof, and give [it] unto [him] against whom he hath trespassed.

Mark how it says when man or woman commits any sin that men commit. There is a sin unto death and there is a sin not unto death. Both the children of God and the children of the wicked one commit sin as it says he that sinneth is of the devil when a man shall commit a sin that men commit. Hosea is speaking of the response of God’s people.

Hosea 6:3 Then shall we know, [if] we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter [and] former rain unto the earth. 7 But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.

In the margin it says they like Adam have transgression, a transgression after the similitude of Adam.

1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

There is a sin that is a similitude of the devil.

There Are Two Types of Sin

A sin that men commit and a sin that is of the devil. Jesus spoke to the Pharisees;

John 8:44 Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

These are some very hard words. Were the Pharisees the children of God? They were not as it says ye are of your father the devil. They were doing the sins after the similitude of the devil. What does this mean? Consider again Cain and Abel. One was of the wicked one and one was of God. Satan is a murderer and a liar. He is the father of lies.

Genesis 4:5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee [shall be] his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

Cain had the same position as Abel. They both were sinners, they both needed a saviour and the requirement for their salvation was for them to slay a sheep and Cain brought the fruit of the ground. He didn’t obey the requirements of salvation. In the scripture the door hadn’t been closed.

Genesis 4:8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where [is] Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: [Am] I my brother’s keeper? 10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground. 11 And now [art] thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand; 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. 13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment [is] greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, [that] every one that findeth me shall slay me.

God pronounced a curse which he brought upon himself. This curse was the same curse given to Adam for his transgression. He was to carry the consequences being the first murderer but Cain added to his curse by what he said and what he interpreted of what the Lord had done. He said thou hast driven me from the earth. God never said Cain would be hid from the face of God, Cain said that. He added into his curse an ingredient that cut him off.

The Sin unto Death

Consider what Satan did in heaven. He sinned against who? He sinned against God by despising Jesus and by wanting to be in the position of Jesus. He became contrary or anti Jesus so Cain was wrath with what the Lord had done and he said from thy face shall I be hid. What is the sin unto death? What is the sin that is committed that cuts of the privilege of having an advocate? Jesus said to the Pharisees you are of your father the devil. What was the Pharisees relation with Christ? John gives an indication of his church at that time;

John 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Those that are the sons of God are those that receive Jesus Christ. Abel had sinned but he received Jesus Christ. Cain made a mistake and the Lord said if you do well you will be received but if you don’t sin lies at the door. God put before Cain the requirements of salvation and that requirement is to receive Jesus Christ. If we do not receive Jesus Christ then sin lies at the door, the sin of eternal death. But if we by faith receive him we have power to become the sons of God.

Any of the children that sin little or old or young we have an advocate with the Father. There are Cains and Abels in every generation that we live in. Do we accept Jesus Christ and His offering? Do we receive Him? If we say yes then we have an advocate with the Father and we must know this so our faith will be strengthened. If we don’t know if we have an advocate with the father then how shall we ask for help? How shall we know what help is available?

1 John 3:12 Not as Cain, [who] was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

What is the scripture saying? He slew his brother and wherefore slew he him. In rejecting his brother, it doesn’t go into detail of what they talked about but Abel being righteous must have talked to his brother to solicit him to consider his way. He rejected Christ in the person of his brother

1 John 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 16 Hereby perceive we the love [of God], because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down [our] lives for the brethren.

As we consider our position, where are we? It is easy to say I accept Christ but we need to understand that in 1 John to accept Christ is to accept your brothers, those in the faith and to love and lay down your life for them. Cain rejected Christ in the person of his brother. This is a test for us. Do we reject Christ through the rejection of those within the faith? Are there those in the faith that stand for truth that irritate, annoy and show us up?

1 John 3:12 Not as Cain, [who] was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

Have you ever had an experience that someone close to you has made advancements in the word of God and you thought it’s too far, they don’t have to do that and its irritated you and thought what they have done is an evil thing but it is actually good? In that irritation you have rejected your brother and cut him off in your mind. This is the rejection of Jesus Christ. When someone dies, all the good thoughts come flooding back and we can’t remember the bad thoughts. If Jesus Christ dwelt with us today, would we treat Him any different if He was alive? He has died and is now in heaven and now we see Him no more. All the good things of Jesus Christ coming flooding forth and we can join ourselves to Him in faith and thought but when it comes to those that are close to us that we are used to, that we have become familiar with, we can cut them off so easily and we can consider our minds that we haven’t cut off Christ.

How Do You Relate With Your Brother?

Cain slew his brother. Who soever hateth his brother is a murderer.  These are the works of the evil one, a murderer from the beginning. The devil hated Christ. He was so close. He was the highest angel and was very familiar with Christ. The saying is familiarity breeds contempt so the devil despised and became anti Jesus.  Is it possible for Christians to become anti Jesus?

1 John 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

It is very easy for us to love Jesus in our words and tongue but do we love Him in our deeds towards our brethren? Do we love Him in truth? Do we say we are Christians and not lie? The key is whether we receive Jesus Christ in the person of our brothers and sisters in the faith. There is a sin after the similitude of a man and one after the similitude of the devil. The man does not despise Christ as Abel did not despise the offering that Christ required. One becomes anti Jesus.

The Anti-Christ

1 John 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

When did these antichrists come from?

1 John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would [no doubt] have continued with us: but [they went out], that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

Within the church there are some that left because they were anti-Christ. The anti-Christ being the pope, if asked what he thought about Jesus Christ he would say wholesome words about him and express his love towards him but the Bible calls him the anti-Christ. Why; because his deeds do not correspond with his words. All the martyrs that have been killed, all those humble Christians that have been slain by the papacy gave the papacy the name antichrist.

In the church there were many opposing the children of faith and they went out from us. Antichrist people are religious. They are very religious. The Pharisees were the leaders of religion. Jesus said they were of their father the devil. To be a liar is to say we are Christian and hate our brother. We have in the church this relationship of the two children of one company; the children of God and the devil. Where do we fit in this position? Do we have an advocate with the Father; Jesus Christ? Do we want to receive Jesus in all humility? As we ask ourselves these questions we can make our election sure. We can decide who we want to follow.

Matthew 13:37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked [one];

The wheat and tares grow up together until the harvest, the end of the world. The apostle John was saying it is the last time. He is talking about the end and he is seeing even with the early Christian church the end happening already.

1 John 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

In the last days we are to expect to see a separation and a distinction made between those who love God and the brethren and those who despise anyone who takes the word of God in a serious fashion and puts into practise a thus saith the Lord. As they practise it they will receive opposition by people so close to them. Those people who reject them are sinning a sin unto death but the children who are of God who desire not to sin, who desire to obey the word of God and follow Jesus in every particular. When they fall, they have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ the righteous.

In the Church

Revelation 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and [I know] the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but [are] the synagogue of Satan.

What do they say they are? Jews the children of God but they are not. They say one thing but are not. They do lie. There are those that reject the brethren who obey Christ who they are hated and murdered. He that hateth his brother is a murderer. The tares become opposed to the wheat and a separation takes place. They become murderers and crucify Jesus unto themselves in the person of the saints.  Those people are saying they are Jews and are not are lying. There are two particulars that Jesus pointed out to the Pharisees. You are of your father the devil and lie.

Who did Ananias and Sapphira lie to? They lied to the Holy Ghost and their punishment was death. They said one thing and did another. It is very important to realise that we must not draw near with our mouths only but hearts also. We must not oppose anyone and especially those that want to obey the word of God down to a ‘T’. They trip and fall over but let us not take that into consideration as some have an advocate with the father Jesus Christ and let us obey not with our mouth but with our heart.

Revelation 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

Spiritual fornication is friendship with the world. There are people that call themselves teachers that go and teach conformity to the world in some way or another or not so much teach it, but not condemn it.

Revelation 2:21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. 22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.

Every time we read about adultery it is talking about mingling the church with worldliness.

Revelation 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

This really brings the onus down to us. Our church membership doesn’t mean anything when our hearts are far from God. He says I will kill her children with death. Is this an arbitrary God or the consequences of sin? The wages of sin is death which is applied as there is no advocate with these children. They are the children of the wicked one as Cain was because they first opposed the truth about their brother and the truth of the brother and secondly they said they were something they were not and thirdly they accepted worldliness. These are the things we need to consider. Do we desire to come out of the world and be separate and to love righteousness and all they that do righteousness? To not just say, we love Christ but to love Christ in the person of the saints?

The Judgment

If we recall in the judgment, Jesus separates the sheep from the goats, the sheep on the right hand and goats on the left. He said to the sheep He was happy because when He was hungry they fed him and so on. They said, when did we see you hungry? He said as you have done it to the least of these my brethren you did it to me. He turned to the goats and said when I was hungry you did not clothe me and they said when did we see you hungry? As you have done it to the least of these my brethren you did it to me. There are two sins of man, they that commit sin as men commit and they who do the works of the devil. Those who are antichrist who do not like Christ and His sacrifice, how shall they be forgiven? But those that are thirsty after righteousness shall be filled.

The things that excludes us from having an advocate is where we reject the advocate and desire to not have one and don’t have one. If someone rejects to have a bath, how shall he be clean? A person may say I would like to be clean but I don’t want a bath. They are saying one thing and doing another. If you reject the bath you are rejecting the cleanliness of it. If we reject Christ in his saints and receive the world and not come to Christ and receive Him, we have no power to become sons and daughters and have an advocate. But if we say in sincerity and in truth I want to give up the world, I want to love my brothers, I don’t have love but I want to love in sincerity and truth if you pray that to the Lord, you have an advocate with the Father.

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:

The sin against the Holy Ghost is the sin of persistent refusal to respond to the invitation to repent. If you refuse to believe in Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. . . , you love the atmosphere that surrounded the first great apostate. You choose this atmosphere rather than the atmosphere that surrounds the Father and the Son, and God allows you to have your choice. But let no soul be discouraged by this presentation of the matter. Let no one who is striving to do the will of the Master be cast down. {TMK 243.4}

Come with your whole heart to Jesus. Repent of your sins, make confession to God, forsake all iniquity, and you may appropriate to yourself all His promises. “Look unto me, and be ye saved” (Isaiah 45:22) is His gracious invitation. {TMK 243.5}

It is so precious that we can have the privileges of an advocate if we will choose. The title of this study is the Christians privilege of an advocate. If you will be a Christian in deed and not word only, you will have an advocate with the Father. It is of vital importance that you understand that we have an advocate when we sin. Not that we desire to sin as we have laid that to the cross. As we come to the time of Jacobs’s trouble, we need to know what the advocate is for and how to use the advocate. How do we use the gifts and privileges of heaven? How do we avail ourselves of the strength to make advantageous strides to make victory in our life so that we can see heaven with full focus and see with our eyes clearly what heaven has for us?

When Satan comes to tempt, lure and goad us into sin, we know what heaven has in store for us and we know the power of heaven and our faith becomes strong. Satan desires to sift us as wheat. Jesus has prayed for us that our faith not fail. We may make mistakes but it is not our desire and we strive very hard against it through the power of Christ and if any man sin we have an advocate with the father Jesus Christ the righteous. May we love the brethren, refuse the world and to be honest before God.

Amen.
