10 Reasons Why Satan Wants You To Wear Pants Without a Skirt

Dear Seventh-day Adventist Sister,

We know that our enemy is doing all he can to get us to follow his agenda. He uses ways and means of which we are sometimes naive. We have been duly warned by our dear Sister Ellen White about the dangers of fashion. This treacherous trap can catch us unawares. I pray that you will ask the Lord for a meek and teachable spirit. What follows is written with a prayer that you will see God’s love in the beautiful plan that He has for you. I would like to share with you 10 reasons why Satan wants you to wear pants. I don’t expect you to take my word for it, but to study it out for yourselves.

1. Satan wants you to wear pants because….he hates God’s creation! He hates the male and female design. He hates your femininity. He wants to take it away from you. He wants to blur the distinction between male and females, and he knows that pants on women are a tool that will help accomplish his devious goal.

There is an increasing tendency to have women in their dress and appearance as near like the other sex as possible, and to fashion their dress very much like that of men, but God pronounces it abomination. “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety.” 1 Timothy 2:9. 1 T 457

2. Satan wants you to wear pants because….he wants you to help promote his ungodly feminist movement. He designed this movement to ensnare rebellious women who are opposing their God-ordained role, and fighting against God’s plan. He first got men to oppress women, then got women to rise up against oppression, going to the other extreme in seeking to usurp their power over men. Pants on women grew out of the feminist movement, and is their trademark. Women who wear pants are unwittingly perhaps promoting the feminist movement.

Those who feel called out to join the movement in favor of woman’s rights and the so-called dress reform might as well sever all connection with the third angel’s message. The spirit which attends the one cannot be in harmony with the other. The Scriptures are plain upon the relations and rights of men and women. {1T 421.4}

3. Satan wants you to wear pants because….because he wants your worship. The feminist movement and spiritualism are bound together, and those who have accepted his program are acknowledging their allegiance to him. Evil spirits manifested themselves to the first ladies to promote pants on women. They got the idea from the devil, and those who accept it are pleasing him greatly! You cannot separate the history of pants on women from spiritualism. Pants on women give the devil a foothold in your life.

Spiritualists have, to quite an extent, adopted this singular mode of dress. Seventh-day Adventists, who believe in the restoration of the gifts, are often branded as spiritualists. 1T 421

If we obey the divine injunction we shall have no sympathy with spiritualists, however smooth and fair may be their words. {Con 91.1}

4. Satan wants you to wear pants because….he hates your family. He hates the sanctity of marriage. He hates God’s plan of having the man be the head of the household. He would like women to be the heads of their households. He knows that if women wear pants, it tends to make them less submissive to their husbands, and causes strife in the home. Frequency in divorce has escalated with the acceptance of pants on women. The children become confused, and grow up without a clear picture of God’s order for the sexes.

Show and fashion are the demon altar upon which many American women sacrifice their children. 2 SM 266

Parents who would teach their children the evil of following the fashions of the world, have a hard battle. 1T278

5. Satan wants you to wear pants because….he hates sexual purity. He wants to promote homosexuality, rape and sexual deviants. He knows that women in pants causes sexual confusion and increased crime. He wants men to see women as sex objects rather than to respect their graceful femininity. Women in clothing that resembles men’s causes moral depravity and disorientation. He wants you to help further his agenda by wearing pants.

The love of dress endangers the morals and makes woman the opposite of the Christian lady characterized by modesty and sobriety. Showy, extravagant dress too often encourages lust in the heart of the wearer and awakens base passions in the heart of the beholder. God sees that the ruin of the character is frequently preceded by the indulgence of pride and vanity in dress. 4t 645

God designed that there should be a plain distinction between the dress of men and women, and has considered the matter of sufficient importance to give explicit directions in regard to it; for the same dress worn by both sexes would cause confusion and great increase of crime. 4T 460

Demoralizing extravagance prevails everywhere, and souls are going to ruin because of their love of dress and display. MYP 359

6. Satan wants you to wear pants because….he hates godly influence. He wants to destroy your influence by having you dress just like the world in their pagan practices. This makes people believe that you are not sincere in what you are preaching. He knows that he can injure the influence of Seventh-day Adventist women who wear pants.

Many dress like the world in order to have an influence over unbelievers, but here they make a sad mistake. If they would have a true and saving influence, let them live out their profession, show their faith by their righteous works, and make the distinction plain between the Christian and the worldling. The words, the dress, the actions, should tell for God. Then a holy influence will be shed upon all around them. 4T 634

Let them adopt this costume, and their influence is dead. 1T 457

Let the sisters adopt the American costume and they would destroy their own influence and that of their husbands. 1T 458

7. Satan wants you to wear pants because….he wants to use you as a stumbling block to both your brothers and sisters. Most women’s pants reveal the female form in a way that tempts men to have impure thoughts. Their eyes are drawn to your private areas. This could cause you to be the instigator of their immoral thoughts, thus making you responsible for their sin. And when you wear pants, even if they are not tight, you put your approval on the wearing of pants for women, so that your sisters feel encouraged to do the same. Although theirs may be tighter than yours, your example serves to encourage them in the wearing of pants. They become bold with a false sense of security and frivolity.

With the so-called dress reform there goes a spirit of levity and boldness just in keeping with the dress. Modesty and reserve seem to depart from many as they adopt that style of dress. 1T457

By your unsanctified lives you have laid stumbling blocks before your own children and before unbelievers. Some of you move by impulse, act from passion and prejudice, and bring impure, tainted offerings to God. TM146

I was shown that God would have us take a course consistent and explainable. 1T 458

8. Satan wants you to wear pants because….he wants you to be a follower of fashion. Pant styles are frequently changing, from bell bottoms, to straight legs, to Capri length, and now to harem pants. He wants you to pay attention to styles, and keep current, so he can control your affections, and wean them from God. He wants you to spend time and money keeping up with fashion. He knows that fashion followers cannot be loyal to God. He wants your fashion consciousness to cause you to wear things that don’t glorify God.

In these last days, fashions are shameful and immodest. They are noticed in prophecy. They were first brought in by a class over whom Satan has entire control, who, “being past feeling [without any conviction of the Spirit of God] have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.” If God’s professed people had not greatly departed from Him, there would now be a marked difference between their dress and that of the world. 1T 189

4T 647 Obedience to fashion is pervading our Seventh-day Adventist churches and is doing more than any other power to separate our people from God. 4T 647

9. Satan wants you to wear pants because….he wants you to disobey God’s Word. He wants you to do that which God has declared to be an abomination. He wants you to justify and excuse your rebellion. He wants to have you profess to be a worshipper of God, while you are actually promoting his agenda.

I saw that God’s order has been reversed, and His special directions disregarded, by those who adopt the American costume. I was referred to Deuteronomy 22:5: “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.” God would not have His people adopt the so-called reform dress. It is immodest apparel, wholly unfitted for the modest, humble followers of Christ. 1 T 421

One of the points upon which those newly come to the faith will need instruction is the subject of dress. Let the new converts be faithfully dealt with. 1T 465

The idolatry of dress is a moral disease. It must not be taken over into the new life. In most cases submission to the gospel requirements will demand a decided change in the dress. CG 432

10. Satan wants you to wear pants because…. he wants to bring sorrow to God’s heart. He wants God’s professed people to be lukewarm and powerless. He wants them to look like the world, and act like the world. He wants to lead them to think they’re on the narrow path while they are actually on the broad road to destruction. He wants to grieve the loving heart of God by using women in pants in church leadership, so that all the other women think that God approves. And Satan rejoices as the angels weep.

Were the apostle Paul alive, and should he behold women professing godliness with this style of dress, [American costume] he would utter a rebuke. 1 T 460

Do not, my sisters, trifle longer with your own souls and with God. I have been shown that the main cause of your backsliding is your love of dress. 4 T647

Man is forbidden to give to any other object the first place in his affections or his service. Whatever we cherish that tends to lessen our love for God or to interfere with the service due Him, of that do we make a god. PP 305

  1. I have heard this, “women should not wear pants” often over the last 30+ years. I have worn pants on rare occasion, beneath a skirt while attending worship services when I visited areas that are cold in the winter time. But to wear a pant suit to church just is not me.
    To wear pants/jeans around home, shopping and working outdoors…is practical. The last few years, I wear them for modesty. My balance is not always the best and there are occasions that I find myself on the ground.
    I do not wear pants when it is hot around home indoors because skirts are simply cooler. (I have spent a number of years in FL.)
    I do believe that it really is a personal decision for each woman…like cutting her hair.

    • It’s not a sin for a woman to wear pants under her skirt and i wear pants or leg coverings all year round. but to wear pants because it’s modest without a skirt, isn’t right. you can get thin skirts. try wearing yoga cotton leggings instead of actual pants under your skirt.

When Science came, people started knowing the truth! “Godly” people started killing them to suppress the truth…. BUT TRUTH WILL FIND IT’S WAY. DON’T TRY TO PULL THE CIVILIZATION BACK !

  2. I love wearking skirts and feel we should as much as possible.. but is wrong not too? I just can’t think that. I can’t see in sister white’s writings, where she was specifically talking about pants (unless I missed it, please show me, because I really need to read it) … many yes, follow the fashions of the season and care about looking fashionable, which is what I see she was talking about…but pants are not just some “fashion” for the season, its a norm, and still feminine…in bible time, they all wore skirts…but yes there was a difference in men and women’s tunics, so there is today a difference in men and women’s pants and clothes styles, without having to get into the skirt issue…what I get out of the bible verse speaking of clothing, is we should not at all wear clothes made for the opposite sex…nowadays you see cross dressing- this is obviously WRONG…but in Ireland, some men wear kilts. or skirts..is this wrong? the skirts are made for the men, it’s their culture.. but if women wearing pants is wrong, then this should be too…but I just can’t see it…unless we are wearing clothes that are boyish, like the button up style shirts that are popular now, I don’t agree with that…but if the clothes are very distinct from men’s clothes, I can’t see the harm….I think its harsh to say women who wear pants should break away from the 3 angels message, I can’t agree with that either…. Although, I’m not saying I’m right either, for we are warned of “being wise in our own eyes” because I am more than willing to give up ALL my pants if i truly see I am dishonoring God…I have done it with everything else in my life…but I have yet to see the problem … :/

    • Where ever you see the words American costume in the spirit of prophecy she is talking about pants. Also kilts for men are wrong. We are to learn the culture of heaven not of the old tribes of Europe.

  3. I Timothy 2:9 Expresses the principal That God has given. IN one version It says Appropreite and becomming in other versions it says modest I am my brothers keeper. For the Love I have for fellow persons I will not tempt or intice others to be tempted. Modest is to be attractive without arousing animal passions. I most look like a women , but more important I must act like one.

At the time when Deuteronomy 22:5 was written, typical menswear looked like the costume shown at http://cf1.8tracks.us/mix_covers/000/253/193/80170.max1024.jpg Please note the blue garment under the leather armor, and how it lacks the defining feature of pants – an inseam. “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man..” is a prohibition against women wearing a skirted tunic such as shown in the photo! Roman soldiers often wore tunics – which we today call “dresses” – and every soldier’s tunic lacked an inseam. Pants were originally developed for women – “harem pants” – and their purpose was to PROTECT women from being groped, publicly exposed, and otherwise attacked. The idea that a pantsuited woman inspires lust to a greater degree than she would if skirted, is ludicrous. If women wish to follow Deuteronomy 22:5 – in accordance with its meaning and intent when written – they MUST protect their modesty by wearing long pants or floor length robes, and give their tunic dresses and skirts to their husbands to wear! Satan doesn’t want women to wear pants, he’s overjoyed that they wear skirts – and to him, the shorter the better.

    Genesis 2:25 “Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.”

    God’s first reaction to human clothing is shown in Genesis 3:11 “And He said, “Who told you that you were naked?” This implies that God was not offended by Adam and Eve’s nakedness, but by their new knowledge of it. God’s original intent was for Adam and Eve to remain naked, but after their fall, in Genesis 3:21 “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” From this, I believe that God does not object to clothing, but He prefers nakedness. I find it quite amusing (and ironic and sad) that when missionaries found isolated primitive tribes, living naked in a jungle, the first thing the missionaries would do is inform the tribe that they were naked and give them knowledge of clothing – duplicating the first effect of Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit: Genesis 3:6 – 3:7 “6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked.”

    If a woman wishes to dress as God originally intended, she would shed ALL clothing, and go about naked without shame, as in Genesis 2:25.

    • I have no confusion. Your studies can not supersede GENESIS! The first articles of clothing were the fig leaves sewn together by Adam and Eve, after Satan tricked them into eating the forbidden fruit and they became aware of their nakedness and ashamed of it. Clothing was originally inspired by Satan and invented by Man. God replaced the fig leaf covers with clothes He made, but no reason for doing so is given. “Modesty” is not mentioned, but it is described as Adam and Eve’s actions taken out of desire to avoid shame. The fact that God provided clothing indicates his consent that we wear clothes, but there is no command that we do so.

      No number of studies can refute the fact that the original state of Grace existing in Eden prior to the fall, included Adam and Eve “naked and without shame”. No study can refute the fact that God created Eden in accordance with His perfect preference – and the original, sinless nakedness of Adam and Eve were part of the perfect Eden as God created it. No study can refute the fact that God created Adam and Eve to live naked, that “no clothing” is the perfect attire for the human body. There was no “modesty” in Eden, because there was no knowledge of “nakedness” and no shame of it, so no reason existed to be modest and cover nakedness.

      Shame of nakedness, and covering it with clothing, (modesty) is a consequence of Original Sin. If you would denounce Original Sin and distance yourself from it, you should abstain from modesty, go naked, and attempt to identify and purge any thoughts or feelings of shame, so as to try to be like Eve before the fall, “naked and without shame”. (It’s also worth noting that every person – even you – enters this world sinless and naked.)

      Your discussion of what clothing we should wear, is merely your opinion of how best to continue the “tradition” that Adam and Eve started immediately after defying God’s first (and then, ONLY) commandment, given to Adam (but not Eve, for she did not yet exist) in Gen. 2:17

  9. Puzzled that all of your other replies relies 100% on the Bible and or Biblical resources but with this response you rely on Wikipedia and your opinion drawn from Wikipedia. I have read Wikipedia, no new information. Since you can not rely strictly on the Bible for this one, I will not either. And what if your parents made the choice for you but you find out later that it was the wrong choice? Thank you anyway!

  10. Thank you for some very interesting reading… a lot of information to think about.
    A couple of points I would like to add.
    1. The issue of women wearing pants is most difficult because we live at a time when most women wear them. To go back on something that is established and not ‘considered’ an issue to the majority of Christian leaders only complicates the matter.
    Yes women’s pants may differ to men’s pants probably because women are a different shape – the point is with pants men get to see a woman’s shape. (That’s the whole idea). The issue then becomes one of causing a brother to stumble, because men are extremely visual, if they struggle in this area it will be easier for them to fall if they can see more of the female form. (yes men can be labelled perverts but the ladies will be held accountable IF dressing immodestly)
    2 With regards to any prophet, the Bible does say/imply that there will be end day prophets (and false prophets Matt 24:24) and that we need to test them. Firstly they will never contradict the Bible Isa 8:20 and they will always point you to the Bible. I hope that helps when deciding on who is a true prophet because I don’t think we can turn a blind eye to prophets especially if God sent them to help us.?!

  11. Okay, it’s time for the other side of the story. I am a Christian, but not a seventh day aventist.

    1.) During biblical times, both men and women wore tunics. NOTHING in the bible says that women cannot wear pants.

    2.) Women who wear pants do not wear them all the time. They still wear dresses and skirts.

    3.) There is a distinct difference in the pants made for women and the pants made for men. Pants made for women are still feminine, and many times do not even contain pockets.

    4.) Some women wear skirts that are much more revealing than pants could ever be. Both Christians and prostitutes wear skirts and dresses.

    5.) There is a BIG difference between hot pants and trousers. People should use common sense when choosing their clothing.

    6.) If women are not ever allowed to wear pants, they can forget playing volleyball, softball, or bowling. They can forget skiiing, cycling, horseback riding, climbing, and gymnastics. And what shall we wear to swim? Are you saying we should just sit in a corner and look pretty? How sad. I don’t think that is God’s plan for me. Think of how many witnessing opportunities we would be missing.

    7.) Plenty of women who never wear pants still adorn themselves in expensive jewelry and fancy hairstyles. (1:Timothy 2:9)(1 Peter 3:3) The bible speaks plainly about jewelry and hairstyles, but there are no specific verses that refer to pants.

    8.) Can you imagine seeing a police woman chase a criminal over a fence wearing a skirt?! You might say that is a man’s job, but the truth is…. men often times abandon their families forcing single mothers into non-traditional working environments. The bible clearly states that we are to provide for our families. 1 (1 Timothy 5:8) Wearing skirts or dresses 100% of the times puts too many restrictions on women. We are not china dolls. God wants us to be active and witness to others. (1 Corinthians 9:24)

    9.) According to Psychology Today: “Studies show that it is women with passive, submissive personalities who are most likely to be raped—and that they tend to wear body-concealing clothing, such as high necklines, long pants and sleeves, and multiple layers.”

    10) The bible says often that it’s what’s in the heart the matters. Until you can come up with a specific scripture that forbids pants, I will have to chalk this article up as a FALSE TEACHING.

    Don’t get me wrong, I agree that people should dress modestly. I even agree that Satan would love for us all to be androgynous. This has been a hot-button issue at my church, and the people who are doing the complaining are not the ones who spend their time volunteering in the church. They judge, but yet no one has been able to show any specific verses that refer to pants. Until they do, I will continue to wear them while I am serving God. 🙂

    • The dress of the middle east in old bible times was the long robes or mantels for male and female. There was still a disctinction between the attire for male and female. Today Muslims still wear that attire as they are middle eastern. Its not the attire of us in the West. Pants are the attire of men in our culture not women. 100 years ago all women everywhere wore dresses or long skirts and they covered their nakedness and the shape or form of their body. They had seperate beaches for men and women also. We are to seek the old paths, the old ways.

      Deut 22:5 says a woman should not wear mens clothing. Western society mens clothing is pants not robes or dresses.

    • I will respectfully disagree. I think the choice to wear skirts or pants should be left up to each individual woman. Like the tunics worn during biblical times, there is still a distinction between the pants made for men and the pants made for women. Women can wear pants and still look feminine.

      Yes, and a few hundred years ago, blacks were slaves. That doesn’t make it right. The Jews killed Jesus, according to old law. “The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.” (John 19:7)

      According to the new testament, Jesus died to set us free from the old paths and old ways of the pharisees.

      I think we should keep our eyes on Jesus instead of our Christian brothers and sisters. I have found that when we start judging each other, it makes people want to leave the church or stop volunteering. It scares away new visitors and new believers at a time when they really need to hear the Word of God. If it is in your conscience to wear dresses and long skirts, that is what you should do.

      I certainly wouldn’t mind having my own beach. 🙂

    • I agree we should just focus on Jesus. Jesus is temperance, Jesus is health, Jesus is dress reform. He is very interested in our being and how we live, drink, eat and dress.

      The fact that Deut 22:5 says a woman shouldn’t wear mens clothing makes it obvious in Bible times the clothing was different, not the same.

    • Thank you for the links. I found them interesting. I have read all of these, but I still have seen nothing that SPECIFICALLY prohibits women from wearing pants. I think you are filling in blanks that aren’t really there.

      People should use common sense when choosing their clothing, and if women feel convicted to wear dresses and skirts… that is what they should do. People should absolutely dress modestly and not follow the latest fashion trends.

      Matthew 6:28 “And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin”

      Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?”

      In biblical times, everyone wore tunics. Men’s and women’s tunics were distinctly different just like men’s and women’s pants are different. You could definitely tell the difference between men and women from the clothes that they wore. Remember, everything can be used for evil or good. Just because pants were once worn by people who did things that were unpleasing to God, does not mean everyone who wears them will do those things. That is like saying that the people who first used electricity used it for evil, so NO ONE should ever use it. I have heard people say that we should stay away from the internet because of all the bad things on here. Imagine how many people we would not be able to reach for Christ if we stayed away from the internet!

      I don’t think God wants us to put these kinds of limitations on ourselves. He wants us to serve Him and help others. I have seen women turned away from helping in certain ministries because they would have to wear pants in order to perform the tasks. These are ministries where it would not be practical to wear dresses or skirts. I think this is a sad message to send to our young women. Jesus did not turn people away, neither should we. Have we become that self righteous? I already feel like I’m being judged.

    • Thank you. I see where we are different now. Your beliefs are mostly Old Testament. I believe that Jesus died to save us from our sins, bring us to repentance, and to set us free from the old law.

I feel it is important to ask hard questions and compare the answers to scripture. I admit that I have never visited an SDA church. I have found that all the truth I need comes from the scriptures.

    It isn’t really Hovind’s theory in the sense that he originated or developed it. He just brought it up again.

  13. The woman wearing trousers, pants, slacks, though she may be personally discreet and humble, is still wearing the uniform of female rebellion against the male in the home, the church and the society.
    Trouser wearing by women of the “Christian” world began with a dancer in France (no surprise there!) who wanted to raise her skirts to show off fancy footwork and high leaps, both of which were scandalous.
    Other dancers took up her innovation. It then spread to actresses (another group not noted for virtue) and to prostitutes.
    The young women of the aristocracy began to wear “drawers,” underpants. The young then as now like to shock their elders. As members of the upper class they could often get away with behavior (like “slumming”) that the older nobility and lower classes could not.
    Eventually the skirt hem began to rise more and more. The “Bloomer” costume was loose trousers under a mid-calf length skirt. Finally by the mid-1970s the skirt had disappeared, leaving uncovered trousers now made of outerwear fabric. This actually was the case in my experience. First the women started wearing trousers to midweek meeting, then to Sunday evening, and finally to Sunday morning. Not a peep from the “elders” of the church. Do they really like being confronted by the parted thighs of every female they see? You know what is seen when a woman sits wearing pants. Just why is it called a “wedgie?” Or worse.

  14. While the devil does indeed want the distinction between men and women to vanish the main thing about the clothesline doctrine is the thoughts and intents of the heart. Satan has always tried to destroy men of God as is evident with Moses and Christ.
    The thoughts and intents of the heart are those in which one woman may wear a pair of pants for modesty in areas such as climbing a ladder and another may wear them to be equal or better than men. The “anything a man can do I can do attitude.”
    Both are wearing pants and one is feminine while the other has an arrogant heart.
    The church wears her Husband’s attire when she judges her fellow man.
    The word says that Christ (Husband of the church) is a High Priest and the breastplate of judgment is his. The woman (church) has no right to wear his garment.
    The woman’s garment is the veil, or covering of the Spirit of God. He will not wear her garment, or be covered by her spirit. That would be an abomination.
    Many do not understand the laws of attire in a spiritual sense and judge others. They are quick to call some lost while transgressing themselves.
    Men should try to be masculine and women should try to be feminine. The men masculine because they are a type and shadow of Christ and the woman feminine because she is a type and shadow of the church, or bride.

  15. As I once commented to a Hutterite (communal Anabaptist) woman, no one will ever think you not a Christian for wearing your dresses.
    Many have doubts connected with women wearing trousers.
    Women wearing trousers is associated with women’s rebellion. Still.
    Generally, it is bad men that incite women to be rebellious.
    No one knows if there was a difference in climate outside the garden. Many believe that the evidence supports the idea that there was a mantle of water high above the ground before the Noahic deluge that made a mild climate worldwide, so perhaps there was no climatic reason for clothing.

  16. Oh – I meant to mention that the French word “culotte,” which English speakers use to mean a trouser skirt or trousers made to look like a skirt when standing, is “cul” = “bottom,” “rump,” “butt,” “rearward part” + “otte” feminine diminutive.
    It is the equivalent of our “breeches,” clothing that covers the “breech,” or rear end.
    When Adam and Eve made covers, they made only breechcovers. God made them tunics or coats before casting them out into the wilderness. Whether for modesty (there were no other people then) or for protection from the climate is not revealed. Almost all peoples the world over, throughout the ages, have worn a skirt or (generally men only) a breechcloth at a minimum.

      God covered Adam and Eve again in Eden for modesty reasons. He made them covered in light, that was his preference so when sin came the full on bandaid had to be provided;

      Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

      It is helpful to note that the Hebrew word for ‘coats’ in Genesis 3 means literally ‘a covering robe’. The clothes God made for Adam and Eve were not primarily for adornment or keeping warm but to cover their nakedness.

      Just who were they to cover their nakedness from? At the time of eviction from the garden they were the only two people on the earth. Those who were later on the earth were all their children and grandchildren.

  17. Scoffers commonly say that in “Bible times” men and women wore practically the same clothes. However, plenty of contemporary depictions of both men and women in various regions during ancient times show that this is not true.
    In the Bible the only trousers mentioned are the linen underpants required of the priests when serving the temple (or tabernacle before the temple was built.
    More ordinarily, men wore either a loincloth or breechclout, if anything, under their robes, cloaks and tunics. Women wore no such garments, wearing only tunics, cloaks and robes.
    In most ancient cultures, clothing reflected climate, season and social status. In the mild seasons, slaves and the poor commonly went naked, or wore only a breechcloth, saving their clothes for when they were needed for protection. Peter, the fisherman, was “naked” when working but when he went to meet Jesus he put his outer clothes on, much as a workman might put his shirt back on when the boss comes to talk with him.
    Even among the Israelites, of whom we have a few illustrations preserved, the taboo of women being exposed above the waist had not arisen. Modern movies and pictures imagining what people of ancient times dressed like are “sanitized” for modern day audiences.
    We should be sensible of the surrounding culture, not appearing odd or strange, only “conservative,” as long as the surrounding culture allows Biblical modesty to be expressed at all.

    • Daniel, Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael likely wore the clothing of the Babylonian ruling class as they were administrators in the Bab. government.
      Generally, in ancient times how much clothing, the style, fabric and ornamentation went with one’s socioeconomic class.
      The slaves wore whatever their masters provided, and the poor wore whatever they could get, if anything. Children commonly went totally naked in fair weather at least until the beginning of puberty. This was the case in recent times even in America, a “Christian” country. As was the case in Africa where the slaves, or their forebears, came from. Clear into modern times in Africa, Australia and other places practically everyone went totally or nearly naked if the climate allowed. In South America, the Tierra del Fuegans went naked and that is a cold place in the winter.

    • There are a lot of other things in the law of Moses that I would venture you ignore.

      Does your house have a parapet around the edge of the roof? I don’t care that your house has a sloped roof. The Bible says, “When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof …”

      If you didn’t build the house, I suppose you’re exempt.

      If you don’t have a vineyard, I suppose v. 9 doesn’t apply to you.

      If you plow at all, I would guess you use a tractor (v. 10).

      I’ve never seen clothing made of wool and linen. Wool and other fibers, yes, but not linen.

      Does your cloak have four tassels, one on each corner? (v. 12)

      Parents, if your daughter has married, do you have the cloth she and her husband consummated their marriage on? Is it bloody? If not, your daughter is in danger of being stoned to death if her husband ever decides to dump her. (vv. 13-21)

      Are adulterers put to death? (v. 22)

      If an engaged woman is raped in town, and no one heard her scream (maybe the rapist had a knife to her throat, or had hold of her upper lip with his teeth (Clinton method)?), is she dragged just out of city limits and stoned to death? Him too if he is caught? (vv. 23, 24)

      If an unengaged virgin is raped, do you force her to marry her rapist? (v. 28) Even if he knocked her teeth out, choked her, slashed and stabbed her, broke her ribs and pelvis, tore her genitals up, maybe shot her a couple of ties for good measure, and left her for dead? No excuses for nonobedience are provided.

      Do you deny church membership to bastards? (Ch. 23:2)

      Don’t think Ammonites or Moabites can be identified at this late date, so we don’t have to worry about v. 3.

      These crimes are not differentiated. None are made as mere suggestions. If you offend in one point, you are guilty of all (James 2:10).

    • Blending two fibres together in clothing prevents optimal circulation and breathing of the fabric. Best to wear single fibres for good health.

    • That’s all well and good, but the health benefits of obeying His laws are not cited as a reason to obey them. Absolute obedience is required; none of the laws are mere suggestions.

    • correct hence why I don’t blend my fibres. I wear 100% cotton or 100% wool, linen or viscose (wood chips).

    • It is so true that worldly woman’s dress today is disgusting–including many professed Christians. However,Muslims are most definitely not an example of God’s design for relationships between men and woman. When you mention going back to that extreme –your views are written off.

      When men and woman truly love Christ and submit to Him–they will find no need to expose their flesh in worldly ways.–But please don’t go to another extreme..
