There is an incredible Bible prophecy that foretold, more than one thousand years before Jesus died upon the Cross of Calvary, that, in crucifying Him, they would pierce His hands and His feet. “THEY PIERCED MY HANDS AND MY FEET.” Psalm 22:16 (A Psalm of David)
Jesus will ever bear those scars, as tokens of His great love for us, in giving His life as a ransom for our souls. It is only through those wounds in His hands, feet, and side, and the shedding of His blood upon the Cross, that every soul who is saved in God’s Kingdom will be able to attribute their eternal salvation. But did you know that there will also be many souls in the Kingdom who have never, while on this earth, heard of Jesus’ death for them upon the Cross, and who will then have to ask Jesus about the meaning of the scars in His hands? But first, let us see how the scars of Jesus were received:-
“And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe.” John 19:2
“And He bearing His Cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.” John 19:17,18
“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5
“But when they came to Jesus, and saw that He was dead already, they brake not His legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.” John 19:33,34
“In yielding up His precious life, Christ was not cheered by triumphant joy – all was oppressive gloom. There hung upon the Cross the spotless Lamb of God, His flesh lacerated with stripes and wounds; those precious hands, that had ever been ready to relieve the oppressed and suffering, extended upon the Cross, and fastened by the cruel nails; those patient feet, that had traversed weary leagues in the dispensing of blessings and in teaching the doctrine of salvation to the world, bruised and spiked to the Cross; His royal head wounded by a crown of thorns; those pale and quivering lips, that had ever been ready to respond to the plea of suffering humanity, shaped to the mournful words, ‘My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” Spirit of Prophecy Volume Three 165
After being taken down from the Cross, “The friendly hands of Jesus of Nazareth, that never refused to touch with healing the loathsome leper, were folded silently upon His breast, bearing the marks of the cruel nails. Those lips, that had answered his petition of relief with the comforting words: ‘I will; be thou clean,’ were silent now in death. Men never knew how much Christ was to the world, till His light was quenched in the darkness of the tomb. They heard the sufferers helplessly calling for Jesus until their voices were lost in death.” Spirit of Prophecy Volume Three 190
After His resurrection, Jesus walked with two of His disciples on the roadway to Emmaus. They did not recognize Him at first, until, while breaking bread with them, they saw His nail-pierced hands.
“And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus Himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know Him.” Luke 24:13-32
“When they arrived at Emmaus, Jesus made as though He would have gone farther; but the disciples constrained Him to tarry with them, for the day was far spent and the night was at hand. The evening meal was quickly prepared, and while Jesus was offering devotional thanks the disciples looked at one another with astonished glances. His words, His manner, and then His wounded hands were revealed, and they exclaimed, ‘My Lord and my God.’” Review and Herald 28 November 1878
Then there was the experience of Thomas, when Jesus revealed to him His nail-pierced hands and feet, and His wounded side.
“With mingled anxiety, fear, and hope, they waited to see if Jesus would indeed appear to fulfil His appointment. Thomas recounted to an eager, listening crowd his former unbelief, and his refusal to believe unless he saw the wounded hands, feet, and side of his Lord, and put his finger in the prints of the nails. He told them how his doubts were swept away forever by the sight of his Saviour, bearing the cruel marks of the crucifixion, and that he wished for no farther evidence.” Spirit of Prophecy Volume Three 235,236
“But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe. And after eight days again His disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith He to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold My hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into My side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto Him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen Me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” John 20:24-29
These marks of His death upon Calvasry for us, as our Saviour and Redeemer, Jesus will ever bear.
“John [on the Isle of Patmos] had seen Christ in human form, with the marks of the nails, which will ever be His glory, in His hands and His feet.” 7 Bible Commentary 955
“Jesus will present His hands with the marks of His crucifixion. THE MARKS OF THIS CRUELTY HE WILL EVER BEAR.” 1 Spiritual Gifts 62
“Every trace of the curse is swept away. One reminder alone remains – our Redeemer will ever bear the marks of His crucifixion. Upon His wounded head, upon His side, His hands and feet, are the only traces of the cruel work that sin has wrought…The tokens of His humiliation are His highest honour – through the eternal ages the wounds of Calvary will show forth His praise and declare His power.” Great Controversy 674
“Our Saviour is not lying in Joseph’s new tomb. Over the rent sepulchre He has proclaimed, ‘I am the resurrection and the life,’ He has withdrawn from human sight into the immediate presence of God. There He is making intercession for those who by faith come to God. He presents them to the Father, saying, ‘By the marks of the nails in My hands, I claim pardon for them. I have made an atonement for them.’” Signs of the Times 30 December 1903
“Be obedient to all the requirements of God….If your eyes could be opened, you would see the Saviour by your side with blood-stained hands. He was wounded for your transgressions; will you refuse to accept the great sacrifice that was made in your behalf?” Signs of the Times 2 June 1890
“Look to Jesus; behold His hands and His feet pierced for your sake; say within your heart, He was wounded for my transgressions. He was bruised for my iniquities, the chastisement of my peace was upon Him, and with His stripes I am healed.” Spalding and Magan Collection 291
Even the wicked will see the marks in Jesus’ hands and feet and side, at His Second Advent.
“The day of Christ’s coming will be a day of judgment upon the world. When the multitude of the lost – those whom God has favoured with great light, but who rejected the light; those who might have been saved, had they obeyed God’s Law, but who refused to obey – when these see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven, they will understand the great sacrifice made in their behalf; they will understand the unmeasured love of the Redeemer – the marks of the nails in His hands and feet, the pierced side – and they will ask to be hidden from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb.” Review and Herald 22 November 1906
“And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” Revelation 6:14-27
At the time of the resurrection of the wicked, when they are to stand before the Judgment seat of God, they will see the scars that they themselves have caused, in the hands and feet and side of Jesus.
“At the Second Resurrection (of the wicked), all behold the Son of man; and those very men who despised and mocked Him, who put the crown of thorns upon His sacred brow, and smote Him with the reed, behold Him in all His Kingly Majesty. Those who spat upon Him in the hour of His trial now turn from His piercing gaze and from the glory of His countenance. Those who drove the nails through His hands and feet now look upon the marks of His crucifixion. Those who thrust the spear into His side behold the marks of their cruelty on His body. And they know that He is the very one whom they crucified and derided in His expiring agony. And then there arises one long protracted wail of agony, as they flee to hide from the presence of the King of kings and Lord of lords.” Early Writings 292
“Jesus will present His hands with the marks of His crucifixion. The marks of this cruelty He will ever bear. Every print of the nails will tell the story of man’s wonderful redemption and the dear price by which it was purchased. The very men who thrust the spear into the side of the Lord of life will behold the print of the spear and will lament with deep anguish the part which they acted in marring His body.” Early Writings 179
“Those who derided His claim to be the Son of God are speechless now. There is the haughty Herod who jeered at His royal title and bade the mocking soldiers crown Him King. There are the very men who with impious hands placed upon His form the purple robe, upon His sacred brow the thorny crown, and in His unresisting hand the mimic sceptre, and bowed before Him in blasphemous mockery. The men who smote and spat upon the Prince of life now turn from His piercing gaze and seek to flee from the overpowering glory of His presence. Those who drove the nails through His hands and feet, the soldier who pierced His side, behold these marks with terror and remorse.” Great Controversy 643
Now let us look at God’s redeemed ones from this earth, in the City of God, and the meeting of the two Adams.
“As the ransomed ones are welcomed to the City of God, there rings out upon the air an exultant cry of adoration. The two Adams are about to meet. The Son of God is standing with outstretched arms to receive the father of our race – the being whom He created, who sinned against his Maker, and for whose sin the marks of the crucifixion are borne upon the Saviour’s form. As Adam discerns the prints of the cruel nails, he does not fall upon the bosom of his Lord, but in humiliation casts himself at His feet, crying: ‘Worthy, worthy is the Lamb that was slain!’ Tenderly the Saviour lifts him up and bids him look once more upon the Eden home from which he has so long been exiled.” Great Controversy 647
The remarkable far-reaching scope of God’s plan for fallen man’s eternal salvation is that many will be in His Kingdom, who have never heard of Jesus’ death for them upon the Cross. Many will be in God’s Kingdom who never heard about, on this earth, the scars that Jesus suffered for their sins upon Calvary. These will be those who lived out the principles of God’s Law – the Law of love and compassion – and who lived out the righteousness of Jesus in their lives – having not known of Him or heard of Him.
“And one shall say unto Him, What are these wounds in Thine hands? Then He shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of My friends.” Zechariah 13:6
“Our standing before God depends, not upon the amount of light we have received, but upon the use we make of what we have. Thus even the heathen who choose the right as far as they can distinguish it are in a more favourable condition than are those who have had great light, and profess to serve God, but who disregard the light, and by their daily life contradict their profession.” Desire of Ages 239
“Outside of the Jewish nation there were men who foretold the appearance of a divine Instructor. These men were seeking for truth, and to them the Spirit of Inspiration was imparted. One after another, like stars in the darkened heavens, such teachers had arisen. Their words of prophecy had kindled hope in the hearts of thousands of the Gentile world. For hundreds of years the Scriptures had been translated into the Greek language, then widely spoken throughout the Roman Empire. The Jews were scattered everywhere, and their expectation of the Messiah’s coming was to some extent shared by the Gentiles. Among those whom the Jews styled heathen were men who had a better understanding of the Scripture prophecies concerning the Messiah than had the teachers in Israel.” Desire of Ages 33
“Wherever there is an impulse of love and sympathy, wherever the heart reaches out to bless and uplift others, there is revealed the working of God’s Holy Spirit. In the depths of heathenism, men who have had no knowledge of the written Law of God, WHO HAVE NEVER EVEN HEARD THE NAME OF CHRIST, have been kind to His servants, protecting them at the risk of their own lives. Their acts show the working of a divine power. The Holy Spirit has implanted the grace of Christ in the heart of the savage, quickening his sympathies contrary to his nature, contrary to his education.” Christ’s Object Lessons 385
“Those whom Christ commends in the Judgment may have known little of theology, but they have cherished His principles. Through the influence of the divine Spirit they have been a blessing to those about them. Even among the heathen are those who have cherished the spirit of kindness – before the words of life had fallen upon their ears, they have befriended the missionaries, even ministering to them at the peril of their own lives. AMONG THE HEATHEN ARE THOSE WHO WORSHIP GOD IGNORANTLY, THOSE TO WHOM THE LIGHT IS NEVER BROUGHT BY HUMAN INSTRUMENTALITY, YET THEY WILL NOT PERISH. Though ignorant of the written Law of God, they have heard His voice speaking to them in nature, and have done the things that the Law required. Their works are evidence that the Holy Spirit has touched their hearts, and they are recognized as the children of God. HOW SURPRISED AND GLADDENED WILL BE THE LOWLY AMONG THE NATIONS, AND AMONG THE HEATHEN, TO HEAR FROM THE LIPS OF THE SAVIOUR, ‘INASMUCH AS YE HAVE DONE IT UNTO ONE OF THE LEAST OF THESE MY BRETHREN, YE HAVE DONE IT UNTO ME’! HOW GLAD WILL BE THE HEART OF INFINITE LOVE AS HIS FOLLOWERS LOOK UP WITH SURPRISE AND JOY AT HIS WORDS OF APPROVAL!” Desire of Ages 638
These are the ones who will then say to Jesus “What are these wounds in Thine hands?” – They are amongst the saved and the redeemed in God’s Kingdom, but they have never even heard about Jesus’ death and resurrection for their salvation – and Jesus will answer “Those with which I was wounded in the house of My friends” [the nation of Israel]
Jesus will lead them beside the River of Life, and explain to them the things which they never had an opportunity of learning about when they were here upon this earth, and also the things which, while in this world, they could not understand.
“Christ will lead the redeemed ones beside the river of life, and will open to them that which while on this earth they could not understand.” The Faith I Live By 14
“A Christian once said that when he reached heaven he expected to meet with three causes of wonder. He would wonder to find some that he did not expect to see there. He would wonder, not to see some that he expected to meet, AND, LASTLY, HE WOULD WONDER MOST TO FIND SO UNWORTHY A SINNER AS HIMSELF IN THE PARADISE OF GOD. Many who have stood in high places as Christians upon earth, will not be found with the happy throng that shall surround the Throne. Those who have had knowledge and talent, and yet have delighted in controversy and unholy strife, will not have a place with the redeemed. Their hearts were not in harmony with the meekness and self-denial of Christ. They desired to do some great work, that they might be admired and flattered by men, but their names were not written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. ‘I know you not,’ are the sad words that Christ addresses to such. But those whose lives were made beautiful by little acts of kindness, by tender words of affection and sympathy, whose hearts recoiled from strife and contention, who never did any great work in order to be lauded of men, these are found recorded in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Though the world counted them as insignificant, they are approved of God before the assembled universe. THEY ARE ASTONISHED TO HEAR THE WORDS, FROM THE LIPS OF THE DIVINE MASTER, ‘COME, YE BLESSED OF MY FATHER, INHERIT THE KINGDOM PREPARED FOR YOU FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD.’” Signs of the Times 24 February 1890
THE WATER AND THE BLOOD FROM JESUS’ WOUNDED SIDE
“But when they came to Jesus, and saw that He was dead already, they brake not His legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.” John 19:33,34
“The priests and rulers were amazed to find that Christ was dead already. Death by the cross was a lingering process; it was difficult to determine when life had ceased. It was an unheard-of thing for one to die within six hours of crucifixion. The priests wished to make sure of the death of Jesus, and at their suggestion a soldier thrust a spear into the Saviour’s side. From the wound thus made, there flowed two copious and distinct streams, one of blood, the other of water. This was noted by all the beholders, and John states the occurrence very definitely. He says, ‘One of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that the Scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of Him shall not be broken. And again another Scripture saith, They shall look on Him whom they pierced.’ John 19:34-37.” Desire of Ages 771,772
“A soldier, at the suggestion of the priests who wished to make the death of Jesus sure, thrust his spear into the Saviour’s side, inflicting a wound which would have caused instant death if he had not already been dead.” Spirit of Prophecy Volume Three 172
“But it was not the spear thrust, it was not the pain of the Cross, that caused the death of Jesus….He died of a broken heart. His heart was broken by mental anguish. He was slain by the sin of the world.” Desire of Ages 772
“While Jesus hung upon the Cross, as the soldier pierced His side with a spear, there came out blood and water, in two distinct streams, one of blood, the other of clear water. THE BLOOD WAS TO WASH AWAY THE SINS OF THOSE WHO SHOULD BELIEVE IN HIS NAME. THE WATER REPRESENTS THAT LIVING WATER WHICH IS OBTAINED FROM JESUS TO GIVE LIFE TO THE BELIEVER.” Spiritual Gifts Volume 1 102,103

“The water that Christ referred to was the revelation of His grace in His Word. Christ’s gracious presence in His Word is ever speaking to the soul, representing Him as the well of living water to refresh the thirsting.” God’s Amazing Grace 119
“The refreshing water..which causes the desert place to blossom, and which flows out to give life to the perishing, is an emblem of the divine grace which Christ alone can bestow, and which is as the living water, purifying, refreshing, and invigorating the soul. He in whom Christ is abiding has within him a never-failing fountain of grace and strength. Jesus cheers the life and brightens the path of all who truly seek Him. His love, received into the heart, will spring up in good works unto eternal life. And not only does it bless the soul in which it springs, but the living stream will flow out in words and deeds of righteousness, to refresh the thirsting around him.” Patriarchs and Prophets 412
“‘WHOSOEVER DRINKETH OF THE WATER THAT I SHALL GIVE HIM SHALL NEVER THIRST; BUT THE WATER THAT I SHALL GIVE HIM SHALL BE IN HIM A WELL OF WATER SPRINGING UP INTO EVERLASTING LIFE.’ JOHN 4:13, 14. “In Christ there is a living spring from which we may continually draw. However much we draw and give to others, an abundance will remain. There is no danger of exhausting the supply; for Christ is the inexhaustible well-spring of truth. HE HAS BEEN THE FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATER EVER SINCE THE FALL OF ADAM. “The stream of blood and water that flowed from His side, declared that He died of a broken heart. His heart was broken by mental anguish. He was slain by the sins of the world.” Desire of Ages 772
THE SYMBOLISM OF THE WATER AND THE BLOOD FROM JESUS’ SIDE
“Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.” Exodus 17:6
“The rock..shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give it to the congregation..to drink.” Numbers 20:8
“Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob; Which turned the rock into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.” Psalm 114:7,8
“And they did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” 1 Corinthians 10:4
“At the Feast of Tabernacles, the most impressive ceremony, one that called forth greatest rejoicing, was one commemorating this event in the wilderness sojourn [the water from the Rock]. At the first dawn of day the priest, in a most imposing manner, dipped from the flowing waters of the Kedron river a flagon of water, and, lifting it on high in the presence of the people, ascended the broad steps of the temple and entered the court of the priests, where he poured the water out before the altar.” Manuscript Releases Volume Eighteen 89
“The Feast of Tabernacles was the closing gathering of the year. It was God’s design that at this time the people should reflect on His goodness and mercy. The whole land had been under His guidance, receiving His blessing. Day and night His watchcare had continued. The sun and rain had caused the earth to produce her fruits. From the valleys and plains of Palestine the harvest had been gathered for future use. The olive berries had been picked, and the precious oil stored in bottles. The palm had yielded her store. The purple clusters of the vine had been trodden in the wine-press. This feast continued for seven days, and for its celebration, the inhabitants of Palestine, with many from other lands, left their homes, and came to Jerusalem. From far and near the people came, bearing in their hands a token of rejoicing. Old and young, rich and poor, all brought some gift as a tribute of thanksgiving to Him who had crowned the year with His goodness, and made His paths drop fatness. Everything that could please the eye, and give expression to the universal joy, was brought from the woods; the city bore the appearance of a beautiful forest. Booths or tabernacles of boughs were erected in the streets, in the courts of the temple, or on the housetops. The hills and valleys surrounding Jerusalem were also dotted with these leafy dwellings, and seemed to be alive with people. At the first dawn of day, the priests sounded a long, shrill blast upon their silver trumpets, and the answering trumpets, and the glad shouts of the people from their booths, echoing over hill and valley, welcomed the festal day. Then the priest dipped from the flowing waters of the Kedron a flagon of water, and, lifting it on high, while the trumpets were sounding, he ascended the broad steps of the temple, keeping time to the music with slow and measured tread, chanting meanwhile, ‘Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.’ He bore the flagon to the altar, which occupied a central position in the temple court. Here were two silver basins, with a priest standing at each one. The flagon of water was poured into one, and a flagon of wine into the other; and the contents of both flowed into a pipe which communicated with the Kedron, and was conducted to the Dead Sea. This display of the consecrated water represented the fountain that at the command of God had gushed from the granite rock to quench the thirst of the children of Israel. Then the jubilant strains rang forth, ‘The Lord Jehovah is my strength and song;’ ‘therefore with joy shall we draw water out of the wells of salvation.’” Signs of the Times September 23 1897

That rock was a symbol of Him who by His death would cause living streams to flow to all who are athirst. There in the presence of the assembled multitude He set Himself apart to be smitten, that the water of life might flow to the world. THE SCARS IN THE HANDS OF JESUS
My eyes haven’t seen, nor have my ears heard
What my Father has in store;
But when I hear the song of a sweet singing bird
I’m closer than I’ve been before
To that heavenly Home, built by God alone
According to His perfect Plan –
Where the only thing there that’s been made by man
ARE THE SCARS IN THE HANDS OF JESUS.
When I see a mountain all covered with snow
That’s fallen from heaven above
It makes me feel small – just nothing at all.
Unworthy to be chosen as one of the saved
To dwell in the Heavenly world – where the Gates of Pearl
Are opened by angels’ hands –
Where nothing that’s there has been made by man
BUT THE SCARS IN THE HANDS OF JESUS.
Yes – we can enter that Home – built by God all alone
Through the spilt precious blood of our Saviour
He’s the Life and the Way to all in that day
Who are saved and redeemed in His kingdom
WHERE THE ONLY THING THEN THAT’S BEEN MADE BY MAN
WILL BE THE SCARS IN THE HANDS OF JESUS.
