Remarriage in the Light of the Inspired Word

Marriage was divinely established in Eden and affirmed by Jesus to be a lifelong union between a man and a woman in loving companionship. For the Christian a marriage commitment is to God as well as to the spouse, and should be entered into only between partners who share a common faith. Mutual love, honor, respect, and responsibility are the fabric of this relationship, which is to reflect the love, sanctity, closeness, and permanence of the relationship between Christ and His church. Regarding divorce, Jesus taught that the person who divorces a spouse, except for fornication, and marries another, commits adultery.

Divorce and Remarriage is it every legitimate?

DIVORCE. – A correspondent sends to the Office the following request: “Will you give your opinion in regard to divorces, as there are some that do not feel satisfied on this subject?” {April 15, 1862 JWe, ARSH 160.1}

ANSWER. – We think that for one cause, that mentioned by our Lord as recorded in Matt.xix,9, divorce may lawfully be obtained, and that the parties divorced are as free as if the marriage contract had never existed between them. Some have drawn what are evidently extreme views from Paul’s language in Rom.vii,1-3. But Paul is there only giving us an illustration, and not laying down rules in regard to the marriage relation. To enforce his illustration, he takes the general rule; and it would be by no means proper for him in that connection to go out of his way to state exceptions. U. S. {April 15, 1862 JWe, ARSH 160.2}

“There is only one other record of official action on divorce and remarriage during the 19th century. At the General Conference Session in 1887, the following resolution was passed:

WHEREAS, Our Saviour has laid down the one sole ground on which parties once married can be divorced; and,  WHEREAS, the practices of society have become most deplorable in this respect, as seen in the prevalence of unscriptural divorces; therefore,  RESOLVED, That we express our deprecation of this great evil, and instruct our ministers not to unite in marriage any parties so divorced. This resolution made official what was surely the consensus of Adventists at the time: only adultery was “grounds” for divorce and remarriage. To this was added one of the first official rules regarding second marriages, namely, that Seventh-day Adventist ministers should not perform weddings for people entering second marriages without biblical justification. A decade after Ellen White’s death, Seventh-day Adventists still had very little in the way of official policy on divorce and remarriage. As the church grew both in size and complexity of organization, there was greater need felt for such policy. In 1925, the church adopted a brief statement of general policy on divorce. The Autumn Council that year approved of a statement that deplored divorce and placed “emphatic disapproval upon any legal action for the separation of those once married, on any ground other than that given in Matthew 5:32.”(10) The church had not yet developed a church manual, so such resolutions like this were considered advisory.”  http://family.adventist.org/home—divorce-and-remarriage-in-the-seventh-day-adventist-church—sda-policy-on-divorce-and-remarr.html

Neither Male Nor Female

Neither_Male_nor_Female

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:51 Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Those who are dwelling very close to the second advent of Jesus are spoken of in Daniel 12.

Daniel 12:9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words [are] closed up and sealed till the time of the end. 10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

The words of Jesus describe these as the wise virgins. The foolish virgins did not understand. They wanted light and oil in their vessels. They did not understand but the wise understood. To understand our preparation for the heavenly society and the sanctification that is to be engaged in before we cross over the border there is a puzzling aspect that Jesus speaks of. This is something we need to understand if we are wise virgins. The Sadducees came to tempt Jesus and posed before him the condition of a man who had a wife and loses her in death and the same thing happened seven times. They asked him whose husband he will be in heaven out of those seven. Read the rest of this entry

Understanding Legalism Versus Gospel Religion

Romans 10:1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.  2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

And from their zeal for God, they are doing it from their own perspective.

Romans 10:3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.  4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. Read the rest of this entry

Restorers of Paths to Dwell In

Restorers_of_Paths_to_Dwell_In

By John Thiel, Marriage Seminar, Study 3, Audio: mp3

We live so very close to the coming of Jesus. It is just around the corner. The experience of God’s faithful people living in these very last days is here identified, they are approved of God.

Isaiah 58:12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places:thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. 13 If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on My holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour Him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: 14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father:for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

The most focused Scripture we are looking at is verse 12 where is says ‘they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places. Thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations.’ Read the rest of this entry

Not by Discussion

We are in need of understanding a question that has been tossed about in many minds and in ranks of Adventism. This question deals with the Words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, the mount of blessings and yet this verse has caused all sorts of complications and problems in the minds of people.

Matthew 5:31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus declared plainly that there could be no dissolution of the marriage tie, except for unfaithfulness to the marriage vow. MB 63.1 Read the rest of this entry

Misinterpretations of the Compassion of God

Misinterpretations_of_the_Compassion_of_God

By John Thiel, Marriage Seminar, Study 8, Audio: Misinterpretations of the Compassion of God

We are to come to the Lord and let him take self out of the equation of our life. If we do that then Jesus will become everything to us. The subject of self is involved in the marriage institution in today’s mentality. We have studied the subject of the marriage institution and the restoration of that which God’s people should be engaged in today. It is important when entering into such a subject we are free of human discussion and debate. We are to enter this subject as Nicodemus did when he confronted Jesus and Jesus said ye must be born again. Nicodemus discovered his Pharisaic research of scripture fell short of what true Bible study is meant to be for the salvation of our own soul.  Read the rest of this entry

To Love as I Have Loved You

To_Love_as_I_Have_Loved_You

By John Thiel, Marriage Seminar, Study 7, Audio: To Love as I Have Loved You

When it comes to restoring the marriage institution, God’s remnant people are to be identified by the correct ingredient of the subject of marriage. Marriage has to do with love. We are to love as Christ has loved us as Jesus said it in John;

John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all [men] know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Did you notice a credential is identified of Christ’s disciples? The church on earth looks for all kinds of credentials that it is accepted of God. Here are the credentials. The church that is God’s church loves one another as Jesus loved them. Not just loves one another. By this shall all men know as this is a new dimension to love. The Spirit of Prophecy verily identifies this as a credential, or the credential. Read the rest of this entry

Heaven’s Ideal for Marriage

Heaven's_Ideal_for_Marriage

By John Thiel, Marriage Seminar, Study 6, Audio: Heaven’s Ideal for Marriage

God’s church is meant to convey particular components to those who are entering into marriage. It is God’s church that is to restore the institution of marriage and heavens ideal of marriage must be entered into if they are restorers of the marriage institution. We want to put into sequence in reference to what responsibility the church has to restore the marriage institution to those who are entering it.

Marriage is an entering into from a plurality into a singularity. The twain shall become one flesh. Let us explore this item when it comes to applying it to people who are looking for a marriage partner and establishing a proper relationship both originally and if things have gone wrong to reestablish it.

Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, [It is] not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

The Marriage Supper of the Lamb

Audio: The Marriage Supper of the Lamb

Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. 8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. 9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed [are] they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

We are invited to come to the marriage supper of the lamb.  God designed that everything around us would send messages to us of himself so that where ever we looked or what we did would speak of him. That is what Gods design was.  If we consider that so that when wake up in the morning we would remember the resurrection of the dead.  Is that not what it is equated to?  Someone waking up out of sleep?  If we would wake up and say Lord, may I be part of the resurrection? Then you might look out of your window and you would see the sun rising and your mind would think;

Proverbs 4:18 But the path of the just [is] as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Read the rest of this entry

Marriage a Symbol of Heaven’s Union

Heaven's_union

By John Thiel, Marriage Seminar, Study 5, Audio: Marriage, A Symbol of Heaven’s Union

The wise shall be purified and they shall shine. We are in need of becoming part of the wise to understand.

Proverbs 4:4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. 5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget [it] not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. 6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. 7 Wisdom [is] the principal thing; [therefore] get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

This verse connects with the wise virgin’s parable and with the wise in Daniel who understand. This is an important subject and needs to be understood under the wisdom of God. God’s church on earth is to represent this institution. How? In God’s plan His church became established. Read the rest of this entry

Restoration of the Marriage Institution

Restoration_of_the_Marriage_Institution

By John Thiel, Marriage Seminar, Study 4, Audio: mp3

We are to study Gods word in such a way that the truth that we embrace is found in a frame work of truth rather than isolated truths and statements dependent upon other statements to understand a complete frame work of truth. There is a danger of studying the bible from a legal view point as we are to study it from a view point of Jesus Christ. In the last days Jesus will have a people approved of God and as a consequence they will be a company that restores all things as He says, “Those who are approved of me will restore all things.” To be of that company requires us to have a relationship with Jesus. As we are endeavouring to be part of a company that restores all things, we apply ourselves to that and allow nothing to interfere. Read the rest of this entry

Harden Not Your Heart

Audio: mp3

It is my prayer we can see the beautiful rainbow of God’s word and how it is perfectly united. The subject of this sermon is divorce and remarriage. It is a subject that is in debate today and it was in debate in the time of Christ. Nothing has changed, we are still here. Jesus had finished his ministry in Galilee and he was passing through Perea on his way to Jerusalem. It was his last visit before he was crucified. On the way the Pharisees came to him. The Pharisees were the leaders of Israel. Read the rest of this entry
